Disneyland, CA have re-opened Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Disneyland reopened its Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride Wednesday after state inspectors determined the attraction was safe, more than six months after an accident killed a rider.
Inspectors spent three days checking whether Disneyland had made the improvements necessary to resume running the roller coaster.
Marcelo Torres, 22, of Gardena, was killed Sept. 5 aboard the roller coaster, which simulates a ride aboard a runaway mining train in the Old West.
Authorities said the lead car lost its rear-wheel assembly, causing it to go airborne and strike a tunnel roof. The first passenger car then ran under the lead car, killing Torres. Ten other people were injured.
Investigators concluded the accident was caused by improper maintenance.
