:) Our plans are coming along for our trip in July. I have booked flights, car and some accommodation. We are staying at the HOJO in Anaheim, they have such good reviews and we have stayed onsite at WDW so I can save the money for a more expensive stay elsewhere.
I have found Tripadvisor very useful in planning where to stay.
I need your advice again please on the best way to get from LAX to the hotel and back again in 3 days time to pick up our hire car.
We will then go on to the coastal road to San Francisco stopping overnight somewhere like Cambria or where ever takes our fancy.
Four days in San Francisco and then four days in Yosemite park where we are staying in an apartment which sound lovely.
After Yosemite it is over to Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyons. One hotel that has good reviews is the Desert Pearl Inn. Has anyone stayed there? We may stay in the Bright Angel Cabins at the Grand Canyon.
After 4 days touring the canyons we head for Las Vegas and then fly home from there.

Does HOJO have a shuttle to and from DL? When we stayed there a few years ago we had my car (as I am a Cali native..) so I didnt notice.
The HOJO is WONDERFUL! we had a room right off of the pool with our patio facing the pool..my sister and I dragged the roll away bed onto the patio and slept outside! hehe it was like camping!! (I was 26 she was 19) My mom didnt complain she got the bed to herself!
I will look more into transport to and from Anaheim and get back to you!

Van Shuttle
Enjoy door-to-door ground transportation via a SuperShuttle seven-passenger van. Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Wheelchair-accessible vans are available on request.
Motor Coach
Comfortable transportation service between Los Angeles International Airport or Orange County Airport and your Anaheim area hotel is provided by AirportBus. (Sorry, AirportBus service is not available for Embassy Suites Anaheim, Red Roof Anaheim, or Red Roof Santa Ana at this time.)
These are all from the Disneyland Website..

We drove hwy5 from LA to Monterey, and even though it was a beautiful drive...I didn't think we'd ever get to Monterey. It was for my 10th high school reunion, and we got there so late, we missed the whole thing!
So, just to let you know, if you've never driven this road before, it's very windy(curvy), and there's lots of little towns (very cute), and slow going. Don't not drive it. You'll miss a wonderful experience. Hopefully you won't be in a hurry to get to San Francisco.
Have fun!!! I love California.

Have you checked to see how much more it would cost for you to pick up the car at the airport and keep it the three extra days?
IMHO Anaheim and DL are quite a ways from LAX. Especially with the way LA traffic can be. I think it's about 30miles if I remember right??

Thank you for all the advice:) I have just looked at the Airport Bus and it is near to the HOJO and has clear instructions so will be the one we most probably will use.
We could have picked up the car from the airport, we were fine in Florida last year but thought as we leave our house at 4.30 am and a long flight later we may not cope with the busy traffic in LA too well. We are also going to be doing lots of driving over the next 18 days so it will be nice to sit back and relax. By Saturday when we go and pick up the hire car we will have rested and got used to cars driving on the other side to what we are used too.
We hope to arrive in San Francisco in the early afternoon of the Monday so we can take our time driving up on the Saturday and Sunday staying over somewhere on route Sunday night.

I would recommend picking your car up from the start ,i've done it a few times and it's not that bad if you take your time. The car will come in handy in Anaheim.
And as far as picking your car up later at LAX(does the car hire company have a local office you can pick up from?) i think you will be wasting half your day when you could be getting a good start to SF (i would'nt bother stopping on the way up ,,unless you particularly want to ,you can do it in 5-6 hours)

Try Laughingplace.com if you want some west coast /DL info ,most of the posters on there seem to be from that side of the US.

Sorry PsychoAlice i did'nt notice.I 'm just trying to give the tourist angle on things. Remember everything is second nature for a local , but it's a lot different for us tourists, driving on the right and all that.
And Laughingplace .com is a great Disneyland site well worth a look if you are heading that side.
