Off topic but can anyone recommend a good hotel in San Francisco? I have been looking on Expedia and then tripadviser to see what people think of the ones that have good deals at present. The Orchard Hotel has good reviews on Tripadviser and is not too expensive. A friend has said we need to be on Fishermans Wharf for the best experience and Tuscan Best Western? has come up with good reviews overall. Car parking seems to be very expensive everywhere.
Any other ideas?:)

In the city, car parking is going to be expensive no matter where you stay. My BF and I pricelined our hotel (got a 4* for $45 a night) and the hotel parking was $21 a day.

I'm too out of touch with the Bay Area to know of good, less expensive hotels/motels, but car park rates always have been astronomical, and the closer you are to the city and tourist areas, the more limited the availability.

If you can stay somewhere near the trolley routes, go for it. You'll want to take public transportation in the city when possible. San Francisco doesn't quite make my "I refuse to drive there" list, but it is close!

You couldn't pay me enough money to drive in San Francisco. My BF is from the Bay Area so he knows his way around (just enough to always get us stuck on a one way road).

There are SOOOO many one way streets I sometimes think its impossible to get where you need to go.

If you like music though, check out Amoeba.... its SOO great!

We stayed in Santa Clara which you will hit before SF on your way up.Then on days we travelled into town we drove to Milbrae and got onto the BART system (a good idea in my opinion).SF is busy and has lot's of one way systems and you have the added fun of avoiding mad cable car drivers.
If you are thinking of visiting Alcatraz i would advise booking in advance as it sells out for days infront. They have online booking.

Thanks for all the tips:D . I will look into hotels in Santa Clara as an alternative rjh. The parking and driving situation do sound to be a bit hectic and expensive in the city.
On your other reply to my post on the tip re driving from the airport Dollar used to have an office in Anaheim but not anymore apparently. We are going to be doing so much driving over the 18 days we have the car that using the shuttle and being without a car for 3 days does not bother us. We will be at the parks for the 2 full days we have in Anaheim and relaxing by the pool otherwise.
Alcatraz is a definite must do so will look at booking soon.

We stayed at the Marriott(Santa Clara) last August ,price and location was good easy to find and in a safe area.
It has free parking(i think) and a good pool area if you want to relax a bit.It seems to be sunnier out of town as opposed to down by the Bay.

Hi

We visited San Fran last year for our honeymoon and stayed at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf, I would recommend you stay in this area as its so nice there. Another hotel is the Raddison, both hotels are right at Fisherman's wharf. There are 2 Holidays Inns which are quiet close as well.

Enjoy, don't forget to go to Alcatraz and take a boat tour around the bay.

And don't forget to take a jacket and long pants (if you wear shorts) into San Francisco. The weather can change from sunny and comfortable (sometimes even hot) to foggy, cold and miserable in a short period of time.

One of the cities I must see! I've yet to get to San Francisco, but I'm going! My father, who traveled world wide for his position, loves San Francisco more than just about any other place in the world. He said he had better Asian food there than in any other Asian country he had been to!

Do take a zillion or so photos, ok? :D Will wait eagerly for your trip report! :D :D

Thanks for the tips on warmer clothing needed. After 2 trips to Florida I had got used to packing very light clothing plus of course the waterproofs.
