I heard a rumour yesterday that the French are to place armed troops in (or should that be 'at') DLP due to the terrorist threat hanging over them. I was wondering, has anyone heard a similar story and also wondered if this would deter anyone from travelling there? If we decide not to go to DLP this year due to this, would that mean whoever makes these threats has scored points?

I havent heard this but it wont put me off going in october or november......no one is going to stop me seeing snow white this year. I think though with the way the world is, its something that we will have to get used to. I know next week when we go to Aintree for the races, that there will be armed police there and on all entrance points for security

It is true they have been put on high alert along with other major tourist attractions in France (and the rest of the world for that matter). I booked yesterday for 1st June, won't stop me going either. As someone who worked in The Royal Exchange in Manchester for 3 years (right next to where the IRA bomb went off) I would rather armed troops be round me than be unprotected. We are watched 24 hours a day on CCTV almost everywhere we go these days, like Chris says, sadly we'll have to get used to it. :(

I got back on Monday from a weekend trip to DLP. Yes there were armed troops there. I really should watch the news a bit more as although i found it a bit scary I thought this maybe was standard for France as I had never been. There were armed police on the Eurostar who went up and down the train three or four times in our two hour journey so seeing armed troops didn't seem totally strange!

The police in Cannes wear short sleeve shirts, white bermuda shorts and then big guns strapped to them. Must be in case all the old millionaires walking their poodles get out of hand

So true Red.
I'm happy to see troops there. Especially after todays train scare.
I just returned from NYC. The parking garage was blocked off by NYPD with a battering ram fitted to the front of the car. As I was about to find another place to park an NYPD officer and an armed National Guard stepped out and asked if they could search my vehicle. I smiled and told them to go right ahead.
When they were done I thanked them.
I wasn't scared. I felt safe. :)

what i meant was that France and Germany stood against the Bush policy and i would have thought the terrorists would give them a break. Spain was one of the allies. I guess i'm just naieve:(

Me too, Brit. Al Q's reason for the madrd bombing was Spain's support for the US and UK.

I'm glad you brought this up Brit. I wish more people would come to the realization that if your considered a capitalist country you're an enemy to the terrorist organizations. It does'nt matter who you kiss up to when, where, or why. They hate us all.

One of the main reasons that France remains such a prime target for Islamic militants is the recent introduction of the law that prohibits Muslim girls from wearing headscarves in school. However there are also other terrorists at work, and there are a mysterious group called the AZF who have threatened to detonate explosives on the French railway if the government don't pay a £4 million ransom. This threat was signed as if connected to the Chechen separists. They're still not sure who was behind the bomb that was found yesterday on their high speed railway line (found because of increased rail inspections). I guess even if someone escapes the wrath of Al Queeda then there seems to be another terrorist group lined up to jump in. As Chris said, seems to be the way of the world.

So, I'd rather see the armed troops at DLP than not, and as the French police are already armed it probably won't be far removed from normality really. Whatever that is nowadays!

I have photos of the soldiers at Disneyland, if anyone wants to see them, just get in touch with me. Its nice to know we have added safety, but its also a bit scary and may make people nervous who werent nervous beforehand, could spoil someone's time. It does kind of ruin the magic, but I think its neccessary! However if we dress them up as the Queen of Hearts guards that'd work ;)

As someone who worked in The Royal Exchange in Manchester for 3 years (right next to where the IRA bomb went off)

You worked in the Royal Exchange? I was in there a few days ago seeing "Great Expectations", very nice theatre, I hadnt been in there before then!

Just got to get my tuppence worth here...

We live in Israel (there, said it) and unfortunately we are very very used to seing armed troops at the entrance to every mall, school, cinema, and indeed all public places. Car boots are checked everywhere and handbags and carrier bags for those entering on foot.

I feel extremely safe BECAUSE they are there and would think twice if I didn't see them. I hear you all saying, well France is not Israel. Unfortunately this is the real world - nowhere is safe from terrorists and the muslim extremists want to rule the world. Think Nazi Germany and what they were trying to achieve in Europe then think of that in terms of what the muslims are trying to achieve but not only in Europe, the world.

Friends, we live in dangerous times but we can either give in to them or carry on with our lives and enjoy ourselves. After all that's what Disney is all about - getting away from the real world whether it's from work, home, school or the threat of terrorism - enjoy the fantasy even if it's only for a few days.

On a final note always look after your belongings, don't leave your luggage unattended and don't try to act smart with the troops - they are doing a job and we need to give them the support and respect they deserve. We must also remember that even although Madrid happened, for every bomb that goes off, with the troops in place dozens more are thwarted.

Now I'll get down off my soapbox!
Jackie

I have thought about terrorist attacks since my time in the Army and since Sept 11. One thing I think.....anything Disney is very safe...why? Because the WHOLE world loves Disney. Think about the total outrage if anything happened....from Paris to Tokyo...there would be no place to hide from outraged Disney fans! I know if terrorists mess with my Disney....they would get a big time hurt!

I was glad of the security checks to get into Disney Village at New Year. In the past it seemed really open to anybody who walked in from the train station, but they were doing thorough checks which was good to see. :)
