Mickey will cruise to Mexico - Disney line to test the waters for expansion

By RICHARD VERRIER
Los Angeles Times

When Mickey Mouse took to the high seas six years ago, there were plenty of skeptics.

But Mickey and the Disney Cruise Line that bears his colors have emerged as respected players in the competitive cruise business. Now, encouraged by brisk business in Florida and an industrywide expansion, Walt Disney Co. is exploring ways to transport Mickey’s family-oriented cruises beyond the Sunshine State.

Disney Cruise Line will inaugurate its first West Coast cruises out of the Port of Los Angeles next year with the 2,600-passenger Disney Magic ship. Ostensibly, the weeklong voyages to Mexico, running May through August, are being offered to mark the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.

There’s another reason: to test the waters for regular land-to-sea packages tied to the Disneyland Resort. Disney also is contemplating cruises in the Mediterranean and Hong Kong, where the company is building a Disneyland theme park.

Disney Cruise Line operates out of Port Canaveral, Fla., with two ships — Disney Magic and Disney Wonder — that offer three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas as well as seven-day itineraries to the Caribbean.

Expanding that fleet wouldn’t be easy. A ship takes about three years to build and can cost $500 million. It’s unclear whether Disney has the appetite to take on such an investment. Disney hasn’t committed to a third ship. President Bob Iger has indicated that ship construction in Europe right now would be expensive given the dollar’s weakness.

My friend who works for DCL and has been with the boat on all of this historic trip of the Magic told me before he left, that Disney has drawings of the designs of the new boat, and it is beautiful, but that it has not been commisioned yet, but they talk about it like it is a done deal, just not sure when.

There are only a couple of shipyards in the world that can accommodate the size ships Disney commissions, and they are in Europe. With the unfavorable exchange rate for the dollar, it's likely to be some time before a new ship is commissioned.

Perhaps they could negotiate some cruises for discounted exchange rates?

I was just reading that some guests have been given questionnaires on future cruises within Europe (after 2007). One was a 7 or 10 night cruise around the med with the ship being based in Barcelona and the other was a 10 night Baltic cruise with the ship being based in the UK (Southampton).

Guests visiting Disneyland Paris may be asked to respond to a survey to see what their reactions are to cruising. Yes please! :D

..and even these are not big enough!
The ships were actually built in two Italian shipyards around 120 miles apart. The front half being built at one of them and the rear half at the other.

The two halves were then brought together and welded up...you can actually see the join if you know where to look.

Apparently the tolerance specified to the builders at this joint was 6mm [around 0.25"], quite an engineering feat eh?
