View Full Version : Water in the parks

Are there water fountains in all the parks or do you have to purchase all of your water? We are going to take some water bottles into the parks with us and were wondering if we would be able to refill them for free or if we'd have to pay for all the water. The bottles are cool, 16 oz, insulated, and they hook onto a belt loop so you don't have to carry them in your hand the whole time.

You can ask for free ice at any of the counter service restaurants. And some of them will also give you free water. There are plenty of water fountains in all the parks. Some do complain of the taste and smell.

Oh......well, if it tastes bad forget the budget, I'll buy my water instead.

I haven't noticed a bad taste or smell. Now, DH always gets sick when he's down there. We finally figured it was the water. Now he uses botteld for everything and he doesn't get sick anymore.

Smart man your DH! I'll follow his lead.
Besides, you know what they say about drinking the water in another country...
...wait, I'm from Ohio..........

I'm close enough to Ohio that I've drank plenty of water from that state & I can tell you I've never tasted anything like the water fountain water at WDW. Ick! That's about all I can say. I suck it up & pay the $2.50 is it (?) a bottle. I'm also thinking the fountains aren't that cold really so even if your thingy is insulated it wouldn't do much good on slightly cold water.

I've never found the taste of the water in the park fountains too offensive but the strength of the fountains and the coldness of the water is another thing. Sometimes it does get colder if you let it run long enough but I think the only sure way of getting a really cold, relatively pure drink is to buy it at the stalls or restaurants. I really couldn't be bothered carting round a prepacked cooler or a refillable bottle. $2.50 what the heck we're on holiday!! Maybe if Disney make enough profit off the water they will lower the gate price - and Blizzard beach may get real snow one winter!

I drink out of the bubblers all the time. Some are much colder than others. Some taste better than others, something I've not quite ever understood, but oh well, there you have it. I like the water from the bubblers better than the water from the counter services (the free water). Having a refillable bottle is a good way to cut down on the high cost of bottled water. Plus, I don't like Dasani, the brand they sell in the parks. The way I look at it is, I'd rather drink from a bubbler than pay a high price for water I don't like. :)
You can purchase bottled water offsite, at Publix, or other stores, but then you are back to lugging it with you.

I also noticed on this last trip that several of the places that sell water are also selling a 1/2 bottle (smaller bottle, not half empty) for $1.25. Worked out really great with the girls, not so much water going to waste.

I'm sure I read somewhere they were dropping the price of water to $2 a bottle on the theory they would sell more, but make less profit thus breaking even and making the customer happy ......or am I imagining things again?!

Dasani, is a Coca Cola brand, which has been withdrawn from the UK. It is basically tap water which is purified (treated) in the bottling plant. The company hit problems in the UK when their advertising was considered misleading and finally foundered when they got their additives a bit wrong and had to withdraw the lot from the market. They have now discontinued manufacturing and supplying it in the UK. I think the fountains would be equivalent to drinking Dasani and much cheaper!

The bromate level in the UK Dasani was too high. The UK FSA regulations are stricter than the rest of the world. Marketing the water here in the UK would have been almost impossible after the bad publicity it received.
I always drink from the fountains and have never had any problem, the taste doesn't bother me. I wonder if the ice cubes are made from distilled water?

Ice machines are usually plumbed directly to the water supply (with a filter on the line somewhere). I don't like the ice cubes at WDW either. I'll use them for cooling off hands and necks, that sort of thing, but don't like the taste of them. I'll but them in my water bottle, but I use a plastic zip lock bag to keep them from melting into the drinking water. Wicked fuss pot, aren't I?

It makes perfect sense not to drink the ice cubes Tink :). Many people won't drink the water when they go abroad, but have drinks full of ice cubes made from local tap water, then wonder why they're ill! :hehe:

I have to drink a lot of water so I drink from the WDW park fountains very often. Although I have a sensitive digestive system have never had any ill effects from the Florida water. If you look for fountains that are in shade, or near-shade, the water will be cooler. :)

OKWTink, what was the brand of water that they used to sell at WDW. They just switched to Dasani recently. I love Dasani water, it's what I buy here, but I recall I liked the other just as well but had never heard of it.
WDW dropping prices? It's a wonderful thought & I hope they do but I'm not holding my breath!

I guess I can't say that I don't like Dasani. I'm drinking a bottle of it right now!! LOL
We do drink from the fountains when we are there. Some are better than others. Some even talk! But the ability to buy the smaller bottles with the girls was great. The girls had trouble finishing a large bottle, and they didn't like sharing. Unfortunately not every place had the smaller bottles. I remember finding them in Harambe Village.

Zephyrhills was the brand they used to sell in the parks, and you can still buy it by the (unrefrigerated, so warm) gallon in the Screen Door on the boardwalk.
I've heard about the rumoured reduction in water prices, but have yet to see it. I think it might be more along the lines of the smaller bottles at a lesser price being confused with a true reduction in cost.

Something I have and am thinking of taking is a Brita sport bottle that has a filter in it. It's the size & shape of a regular sport bottle. You can put in some nasty water and out comes filtered water. Believe me, I've done it at plenty a long, hot summer all-day concert festival. You just have to make sure the filter is still good.
PaulaK, I made that exact mistake on time in Mexico. They are famous for having bad water. I didn't drink any but didn't even think the frozen margaritas we were drinking were made with ice frozen out of the same nasty water. All 6 of us felt ill the next day. Lesson learned!

We use the Brita bottles every trip. They are a life saver. I also bought a box of single servings of Crystal Light to put in the bottle as well.

Drinking plenty of water is key to a good experience at WDW. If you don't like the taste of the water out of the fountains, chances are you won't drink as much water as you should (and you could end up getting ill from not drinking enough!). So, it is always good to have a back up plan.
We generally go to the store for water and buy a bunch of water in bottles. I like to put some in the freezer the night before and then we have cold water in the parks the next day (for a while, anyway--'til it melts :) ).

Since I don't have access to a refrigerator/freezer at WDW, I tuck a few bottles into my soft cooler each evening/morning when I replenish the ice. I buy the .5 litre bottles, as I can fit 2 or 3 into my 6-can cooler pretty well.
I don't like carrying a lot of stuff in the parks, so I start out with a chilled bottle of water and supplement as needed throughout the day. If I return to the resort, I start all over again!
I also use one of those bags they sell in the freezer section of the grocery stores that are designed to help keep you food frozen/cold for a few hours. I put some ice in zip top bags and a bottle or two of chilled water in it and leave it in the rental car. It isn't icy cold, but it stays pretty cool, and tastes good if I neglected to get a drink before leaving the park! :)

The ice machines at the Disney resorts have a filter which removes the sulfur taste. I use a rubbermaid pitcher which I keep filled with ice, as the ice melts I have good cold water. I also carry an insulated water bottle with a strap to the parks. I fill it with ice and water at the room. It will last for several hours. I find that I feel better about drinking alot of water when it doesn't hit me so hard in the pocketbook. It is really easy to dehydrate in the Florida heat.

The Brita water bottles sound like a great idea...I'll have to go pick up a couple before we leave. Can I buy them at Wal-Mart?

I believe you can buy the water bottles at WalMart. If not, I think you can find them at Amazon.com.

The only problem I've noticed is that Epcots fountains don't work very well.

We took a thermos full of ice everyday and filled it from the fountains as needed. Stayed icy cold all day. Never tasted bad to me, as long as it was cold and wet I didn't care :D
