When we went, Helen carried hers as carry on in a large garment bag. It was considered as an "extra" but they didn't mind and didn't charge. When we got to the plane, we asked if they'd hang it up somewhere and they put it in the crew cupboards somewhere. It arrived with us safe and sound.

As Keith suggests...take the dress on as hand luggage. My friend did this and wasn't charged the extra baggage fee. At least you know where the dress is and that it isn't being thrown about in the hold with the other luggage.

I've read in a magazine that the dress is better off being checked in because in the hold it is far cooler and so it wont get so creased. I intend packing mine in tissue paper and polythene and putting in a hard shell case and checking it in.
It's great to hear that the crew have been so accomodating with you guys in the past, with taking dresses on board but I think it's luck on the day with who happens to be on the crew as to whether they will accomodate you.
It's a difficult choice! aaaghhhh!!!!!!

I *really* wouldn't want to trust a wedding dress to the hold nowadays with security opening cases here and there.
Mine was opened last time and no tags or anything put back on it. It was half open when I picked it up from the luggage carousel. No big deal with what was in it, but if that had've been the wedding dress MAJOR eek!
On board is air conditioned and it can be hung up and I really think especially if you call the airline in advance, that there'd be no trouble taking it on board.

I just watched Airline USA last week and a woman on there had packed her dress into a solid box, checked it in then when the plane landed it somehow fell off the trolleys carrying the luggage the lid came off and the plane actually ran over her dress! OMG you should have seen it great big black tyre/tire <....for the Americans lol! cos their spelling is different, marks all up the dress...totally ruined. The airline was in two minds as to whether or not they should pay up! Can you believe that! they did in the end, no compensation though just another dress!

I'd never trust something as important as a wedding dress to the hold of an airplane. I'd be worried sick that they'd lose that bit of luggage! Also, I can't tell you how many times I've had my cases returned to me soaking wet. The contents have been wet also, as the cases are not water tight. That's all you'd need, is a water stained wedding dress.
I'd carry it on and ask the crew to hang it for me. After all, how many wedding dresses can there be on board?

Yes, I did see that TV programme with the tyre marked wedding dress!!
I feel like I've been shouted at now! Okay I'll reconsider and take it on board.

Hi Becky
I am getting married at Disney in December and am buying a specially made travel box for my dress and bits from The Empty Box Company. They do a travel size which fits in with the hand luggage requirements of airlines and they include acid free paper to keep your dress protected.
Hope this helps.

Aww Bec, not shouted at I promise..... it's just we'd hate for your dress to be ruined.
Lisa's idea of a special travel box sounds great!
