We are staying in a standard room a the POly and was wondering what would be a good building to request? We have 2 young children so a view of the castle would be nice but not sure if any standard rooms would have that view?

Standard view usually means you'll be looking out at a parking lot or other service-type area. To have a view of the castle, you would need to request a lagoon-view room.
The rooms are all really nice at Poly, we usually stay in the Rapa Nui building cuz its handicap-accessible for Granny's wheelchair, but we also stayed in Tokelau - thats nice cuz its right near the quiet pool :D Rarotonga is also near the quiet pool and also close to the main building to get the monorail to the MK. I think Tahiti is near the TTC so you can access the monorails to both MK and Epcot as well as the ferry boat (Rapa Nui is also near TTC too :D )
I believe somewhere on the site is a map of the resort, that might give you a better idea. But even if you have it booked as standard view, if there is availability they can upgrade you with no extra cost - we usually book under standard and they have always given us a garden view :D
Hope this helps!

The Polynesian only has two categories of room view. Some travel agents and even WDW travel will sometimes get view names mixed up with the way other resorts categorize their rooms but in their system there are only two designations of room view. One is lagoon and all but two of these rooms face the lagoon and Magic Kingdom directly. The other category is garden (sometimes referred to as standard) view. The garden view rooms include views of parking lots, garden areas, pools, monorail, marina, beaches and in some cases partial lagoon views. For more detail on the views visit the link I have posted.
I will say that I have looked at every view possible at the Polynesian and only one building has a true parking lot view and that is the east side of Rapa Nui. The others that face the direction of the parking area have more of a view of garden areas and the monorail and you can hardly see the parking lot and in many cases can not see it at all.
Aloha

I'm so nervous about the room we're gonna get. :afraid: We have asked for Rapa Nui and i'm hoping we don't get a parking lot view, but the main thing for us is non-smoking whichever building we get.

Rapa Nui is where the disabled rooms are, Paula. It's right by the disabled parking bays. Very near to the T&TC though.
One side is parking view and the other is the path that goes through the resort.

We wanted to be near the TTC rather than the main building, but i'm not *too* fussed about the room, i'm just glad i'm going! :excited:
If we hate our room can we say no thanks?

Paula,
First of all take a deep breath. You should look forward to your vacation, not worry about what could go wrong. Lets say you get assigned a room in Rapa Nui that faces the parking lot. They show you a map at check in as to where your room is. If you see you are there than ask nicely with out getting upset if there are any other rooms available and have them show you on the map. I have even gone to a room and asked if there was anything with a better view and they moved us so you are not going to be stuck in a room you don’t like in most cases.
Rapa Nui is not the only building with non-smoking rooms. Infact most rooms and entire longhouses are non-smoking. The only smoking rooms are in Tuvalu (3rd floor) Half of the second floor in Tahiti (separated by doors in the hall), the Tonga suites, half the 3rd floor of Hawaii (concierge only) and all of Niue. Aotearoa, Rarotonga, Fiji, Samoa, Tokelau and Rapa Nui are all non-smoking.
My personal favorite is Tokelau because you could get a room that has a partial lagoon view or even a sideways view from your balcony of the castle and fireworks for a garden view price.
Also do not fax in any requests. The staff I know there said that is not a good way to get your requests in. Do it through a travel agent or planner or call them yourself about 10 days before you go. That is about the time they try to assign your room.
Again if you are not happy with your room assignment just ask nicely if there are any others available. 99% of the time they can help you get another room.
Next time you go email me about the “Tiki Plan” and we can help you out with your reservation and you can get some free goodies from Hawaii.
If you need any more help let me know.
Aloha
Steve

Quick follow up.......we were allocated a ground floor room in Tokelau. We had requested a 3rd floor with CRO, but they had no record of it. Anyway, we very politely declined the ground floor room and they managed a 2nd floor in Tokelau, room 2942 with a view over the quiet pool. We could watch the fireworks no problem from our balcony. The TTC was a 5 minute walk out the back door of Tokelau and we had only a 2 minute walk to the great ceremonial house, it was a perfect location for us :D
I'll explain more in my trip reports of my thoughts on the resort as a whole :)

We were also on the 2nd floor of Tokelau, just down the hall from Paula and Alec. If you walked out the front door in the early morning hours there was a great view of the Castle all lit up as well as the Contemporary Resort Christmas Tree.

After years of avoiding the Polynesian (I was afraid it would be disappointing... hubby and I have spent lots of time in Hawaii and we were even married there...), we finally stayed there on this past trip and I was more than pleasantly surprised! The room was bright and spacious. It had a large balcony overlooking the quiet pool. And we were close enough to everything. I didn't get to see the Castle all lit up, or the Contemporary tree, or the fireworks from our balcony (hubby goes out for coffee while it is still "O dark thirty" while I lounge in bed...). We did watch fireworks from the beach one night tho, and they were awesome! And being on the monorail has it's benefits - especially since we enjoy dining at the other monorail resorts!
I would not hesitate to stay at this resort again. I really enjoyed out brief stay there!

Had another wonderful stay there last week. Booked standard room and got a 3rd floor room in Samoa, overlooking the volcano pool. View was great, we could see Seven Seas Lagoon and the Grand Floridian.
Rooms are very spacious, and couldn't complain about a thing :D
