View Full Version : Disney merchandise too babyish?

My DD and DS take drinks of water to school as school encourages drinking throughout day and in lessons. They use flasks with pop up lids as they will not be confused with others' drinks and do not spill. DD(5) has Cinderella on hers and DS(6) has Finding Nemo. I overheard him telling his sister this morning that some boys in his class said Finding Nemo is babyish, but not to tell me. I told him that I had heard him and as I was wearing Donald Duck top at the time told him that Disney is certainly not babyish! My question is, should I get him a plain flask or encourage him to continue using the one that he picked himself just 2 months ago? Children can be so cruel. :(

Children are very cruel. I used the cups with the pop-up straws through high school  then again, I also carried around a Lion King lunch box so I guess I'm not really normal.

It sounds like jealousy on the part of the other children to me. They don't have Disney stuff to carry around so they are going to make fun of those who do. Unfortunately it is the way kids are today.

If it's in the budget, ask him if he would like a plain one for school and to keep the Finding Nemo one for family outings. 'Course, you also would have to do the same for your DD!

It's a good possibility that he also will take Nemo to school again as he develops a better sense of himself. Peer pressure! :)

My parents wouldn't buy licensed merchandise when I was young, so the question of Disney characters being childish never arose!

I'll bet the people saying Finding Nemo is too babyish are the ones that watch films with adult ratings and lots of violence. Also explains why DS wanted to change Stitch lunch box for a Spiderman 2 one a couple of weeks ago! I think a shopping trip is in order

I agree. I have terrible trouble with a neighbour's son. He's 9 and DS is 6, and IMHO he's too advanced for a 9 year old. He's always telling DS that his stuff/opinion is 'babyish'. He even told him that he doesn't believe in Mickey Mouse!!! :ohno: I told DS is just coz he's never met the real Mickey Mouse / never been to WDW. :smug:

I agree with the violent movies comment made above. Did you ask your son how he feels about the Nemo bottle? Perhaps it doesn't bother him that another kid thinks it's childish. I am told pretty regularly that I have childish things in my home and/or office, and have been hearing those comments since I was a teenager. But I think it's fun, and don't care. (I do understand that it's different with kids).

Just got back from collecting DS from school and asked him if he would like a new flask. He said "No thankyou, I told the boy that Finding Nemo is not babyish". I'm happy that he stood up for what he likes, but will have to keep an eye on what happens at school now. Don't want him falling victim to bullies because of my disney obsession!

When I was at school, it was Superman, Fantastic Four, and Batman lunch boxes. They even came with those mini thermos'es (except the glass inside would break if you so much as looked at it). I think I have a couple of them stored away in my mom's attic.

I had a Mouseketeer lunch box for a while, but got kidded about it too much. They just didn't understand that Annette was a babe! ;) Funny how things just don't change.

I found with my kids that the boys seemed to outgrow disney merchandise earlier than girls. My DS still watches some Disney shows and movies but only wears his Disney stuff when we go. I really try not to get him any clothes with characters. At least I convinced him to be Shang instead of Yu-gi-oh for halloween. I wasn't ready for him to leave Buzz behind, but as long as he still gets excited when we go to WDW then I guess it's ok.

I'm glad that your son stood up for himself . Finding Nemo is Not babyish ! I have a couple of after school kids that are 6 & 7 that have Finding Nemo backpack/lunchbox .
I agree also that kids are listening and watching way to much adult entertainment . As a pre-school teacher , I also teach music . One morning I left each child pick a song to sing that was their favorite . One that we had learned together . I had the usual ABC's and such . One little girl stood up and starting singing a song by Nelly . It's getting hot in here so take off all your clothes . I was shocked ! :afraid:
Later on, I very gently told her that I enjoyed her singing, but, some music that we listen to at home is not good music to sing at school . It really bothered me that she actually new the words . These CD's are rated R,should be X rated .
I also had a sweet little girl that was afraid of Chucky . Apparantly , the parents let her watch the movie and then teased her , that if she wasn't good , Chucky would come . What is wrong with people nowadays !

 JM , I still carry an insulated Lion King lunchbox !

I'm 17 years old and loved Finding Nemo and I would take a Finding Nemo cup with me to lunch and I'm a junior is HS!

You can tell him, I think he and his sister are madd cool to be takin' those things to school, and the kids that say it's babyish are just trying to hard to be cool :)

Cause I think it is cool to have personality and you don't want it to be lost or confused with other kids'.

It's just a phase. :)
