I have heard disturbing news about the island of Grand Cayman. It seems that since Hurricane Ivan the island was left a disaster and there has been a ton of looting and people getting injured. Has anyone been there recently or has heard similar news?? :(

No Cruise ships are sailing to Grand Cayman right now until the damage is fixed.

No one is allowed on the island unless they are rescue workers with a letter saying that they are there to help, residents, or citizens of Grand Cayman living elsewhere

The airlines will not even allow you on a flight to Grand Cayman. As they have imposed restrictions on travel there.

Here is the official work from a Travel Industry magazine

The Cayman Islands government had issued temporary travel restrictions

The restrictions are straightforward. Caymanian passport holders, Caymanian residents and relief workers carrying work permits are the only people permitted to enter Grand Cayman by air or sea

How long has this travel restriction been in effect? We just called Disney last weekend and they mentioned nothing of it, even being on the phone with them for 20 minutes speaking specifically about excursions on the island.

Both Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are open for business. Any word if they are accomodating the cruise ships?

My wife called Disney this morning and Disney is still trying to work with the Cayman Island government to get their cruises into Grand Cayman and that is why they have not changed any itineraries. We asked them what would happen if we were cruising today and they said they are cruising 150 south of Cancun in Costa Maya, Mexico.

Sorry I didn't answer your second post but I haven't been on since I posted that answer

Yes that is correct that for the following few weeks and until Grand Cayman is safe to travel to again, the ships will call onto Costa Maya

That's not the only island on cruise itineraries to have problems since the hurricanes. Grenada is still not ready to accept cruise ships into port, so those cruises are using other ports such as St. Vincent, instead.

The hurricanes did some serious damage in the Caribbean. It's just not been too widely advertized outside those specific islands. :(

So how about Castaway Cay. How is it post hurricanes?

According to Castaway Club, Disney's island is fully operational and has been since a few days after Hurricane Frances. They also diverted cruises from Castaway Cay during Hurricane Ivan since they didn't know what direction "he" was going to take.
