britchick,
Conventional Wisdom when XBOX was first introduced: Playstation had more games for the younger crowd and XBOX had more mature games. I'm not sure that distinction exists anymore.
I think the basic box is about the same price for either system. But, you should take a look at the additional options you may wish to add on. For example, XBOX will play DVD's--but, you have to buy additional accessories to do so.
For either system, there are always a bunch of accessories one must add on for maximum enjoyment. One such thing is the memory card which allows the user to save games and pick up where they left off. Generally, the gaming system is only sold with 1 controller and that is no good if you want to play games with friends. With more accessories, you can also hook up either system to the internet and buy a gaming subscription for playing interactive games on-line.

The Playstation 2 also plays DVDs and requires no extra assessories to do so. We have a PS2 and Jordan is quite happy with it. I believe DC's comment about the nature of the games still holds true...I was speaking to a *gaming dude* at Blockbuster the weekend before the wedding and he said the same thing. The Gamecube by Nintendo also caters more to the younger gamers and it less expensive than the PS2.
We are considering a Gamecube for Christmas this year, because you can buy an adapter to play Gameboy Advance games as well.

We let our DS choose as he is the gadget king in our house, he went for the X BOX last Xmas when he was 13. He also plays DVDs on it.
( He also outplays his Dad on every game! )

DS-16 just woke up--so, I asked him which one he preferred and he said, "XBOX" because of "Halo" (rated M) and "Halo 2" (to be released Nov 9th). The XBOX has better graphics.
He said Play Station 2 has more games for good variety, but in his opinion the system lacks in computing power. He also heard there is going to be a Play Station 3 (sometime in the future--no idea as to how far in the future :) ).

we have both in the house, the PS2 has loads more games, x-box is good cause it has a Hard Drive, so instead of reading the disc is spools to the HD, both can be used on broadband for network gaming, there is a PS3 due out next year and no doubt an XBox 2, oh and both plug into your TV or as we do in our pub, plug it into the big screen

X box everytime.
Also at the moment, PS2's are incresingly hard to find in shops, as Sony are bringing out the PSP, a thinner version of the PS2, they are trying to build up demand before they bring out PSP and then the PS3.
The choice of games on the x box is getting alot better, with more and more titles released every week.
Me and my s/o got an xbox a couple of weeks ago, and we have been playing burnout3 on X box live, with people right across the world. It costs about £40 for the starter pack and mic, and that includes a years subscription, but it's great fun.

thanks for all your suggestions
so it can't be plugged into the computer monitor then? ds has a computer monitor so don't really want to get him a tv too.
do you reckon we ought to wait and get him the ps3 next year? i suppose they'll be loads of money then!!! saw an Xbox for £69.99 in a shop the other day

Brit, I will ask colin when he gets in from work if the xbox can be hooked up too a monitor, (he works in a gamestation store) I think that a while ago he had been thinking of hooking his up to the monitor.
I think that average price is £99.99 for both the x box and ps2 at the moment.
Also I wouldn't really get a ps3 as soon as they come out. I know several people who bought the ps2 when it first came out and they found alot of teething problems with them. It seems to happen quite a bit with the sony consoles though (and I'm not just saying that because I have an x box)
Also the XBox 2 is sopposed to be out sometime next year, but once again they will be expensive (I think that when the x box origionaly came on to the market it was around £300.)

Sony advertises cables for connecting to computer monitors:
link to sony (US) site (http://www.us.playstation.com/peripherals.aspx?id=SCPH-10100U) (I didn't see this on the UK site--don't know if there are differences between US and UK hardware).

We first got X-box then found family mamber had playstation 2 so took it back and exchanged it for PS2. Found PS2 to be much lighter & flimsier so exchanged it for the X-box again. Now we have 3 within the family so we can swap games.
However DW needed something to keep her mind off the flight to Orlando so we got a Gameboy Advance which she uses all the time I am here posting.

ds prefers ps2 than xbox, has got ps2 and has played on his cousins xbox, he says the games are better on the ps2, more to choose from. as it stands today, graphics are not the best way to judge a game but the game itself, no good having brill graphics and cr***y gameplay. i just built myself a good pc that has multi-booting operating system, one for games and the other as the workstation, IMO its better than both, and depends on what games you like too

I've played burn out 3 on the x box and the ps2, and the grafics of the x box are alot better than the ps2 imho. Alot of the same games are getting released on on both consoles now, which is a good thing.
I have also heared that the x box games will still be able to be played on the x box 2.

Not 100% sure but I don't *think* you can use the computer monitor...however both systems offer attatchable "flip up" screens that can be purchased seperately...
We have both (as well as the game cube) and right now (at age 12) Andrew prefers the ps2 (based on, as others have said, the variety of games it offers) In fact the xbox is in *our* room and the only thing it is used for at the moment is a DVD player :D

both consoles in the uk retail for £99.99 and if you go to somewhere like game or gamestation, they have combo deals, where you can get a game and sometimes extra controllers with the console for £99.99.
If you go to gamestation they have a great scheme they do, called trade and save, in which you trade in any old games and or consoles, in good working condition, and you can get money off your next purchase. I think that game have started cottoning on to this idea aswell.
Also, if your d/s decideds he doesn't like the console he gets, he can trade it in for the other one, at a much lower cost.

I like the Play Station, which has nothing to do with the fact I won it off a radio station. It has a few games that my son really likes, and games that I like. Most of the popular games are ported to the other platforms now, so it becomes a question of features.

My DS has 3 game systems-Nintendo Game Cube, XBox, and PS2. By far the PS2 has been system of choice!
He quickly lost interest in Game Cube as games were geared for much younger children, XBox is his second favorite and has games geared more towards adults. The PS2 has a huge selection of games and seems to cater to all ages in their games-from the cute, cuddly games to the extreme.
My DS says that if you were to buy a system go with the PS2-graphics are great, new games are still steadily being produced, dvd is a real bonus--your DS won't be disappointed----believe me he's spent enough hours "testing" the systems out, I think the companies should pay him for his "expertise"! :D

Aaahhh the Amiga 500 - now that was a computer.:D
We have a Commodore 64 sitting on the shelf behind me, complete with a stack of games - still comes out for a game of Ghostbusters now and again.
Oh and we are a PS2 house.
And Brit should have started this thread a week ago - we just sold a brand new PS1 and a load of games on ebay. :faint:

Ghostbusters was cool - Lisa and I both had 48K Spectrums
PS2 everytime for us
People can quote specs and techy stuff but the games are what is important - always found the game controller for the xbox too fiddly

I can't use the ps2 controller now, I was in gamestation at Midnight on Thursday for the launch of the new grand theft auto game, and I was playing on the PS2 pod, and got rather annoyed with it after 2 and a half minutes..... and I was only 30 seconeds into the game.
