Been looking at MP3s players and have seen a "napster" one that looks pretty good. However to download from Napster you have to have windows 2000 or XP and as we have windows Millenium we dont think it will work. Has anyone tried Napster on ME in UK or do we need to update ME to XP and which is the best. (We do have XP disc but would appreciate any comments before we install it)

you should install XP anyway these days.. its core is a heck of a lot more stable than the 95/98/ME branch of windows and it comes with a load more nice to have "stuff" built in.

I'd recommend xp pro over home too but I accept most people don't need the extra stuff in pro. Either way, upgrade (but be prepared for the odd thing like old games to perhaps stop working)

dont do an upgrade, do a clean install, but remember to back up first, i agree with keith xp pro over home,

why not try winmx it works on MS ME :D

before you do it download the drivers and software for your

graphics card, modem, soundcard etc etc for xp, and put them onto a cd

Shogun
October 17th, 2004, 18:43
Hi Mike. Thanks for the info.

I presume you mean by a "clean install" that windows ME comes out first then XP goes in -- How?

ukwdwnut
October 17th, 2004, 18:49
after you have backed up all of your files, boot on the xp disc, delete the partitions, then create new ones one for the operating system to go on and another for data, then install the OS, im doing one as we speak :D

:iagree: with keith

for the time being should be ok

before you blow it away, download the drivers/software for your hardware as i said before and put on cd.......once rebuild before you get your broadband account set up(if you have it, even if its dialup make sure you get your anti-virus s/w and firewall installed, if you have a/v only make sure the xp firewall is activated first, then get the updates for the a/v install right away

make sure the xp firewall is activated first, then get the updates for the a/v install right away

Thats SO important....!

In fact, go out today and buy a magazine like pcpro that has XP servicepack 2 on a cd on the front.

When you're installing XP, disconnect the modem/ethernet card etc from the wall and do NOT re-attach it until you've installed XP *AND* install servicepack2. That way you'll be safe from worms/virii etc.

serif make some very good dtp packages ie pageplus, i can send you one if you like not copied but the real thing if i can find one. at really reasonable prices, have a look on their website and take a peak, once you are a customer of theirs they always offer you cheap upgrades, and you can always find the previous versions of pageplus on cover discs on pc mags

ukwdwnut
October 17th, 2004, 19:45
most of the time its a driver problem thats causing it, go into safe mode and (if you can still get on the web download all the latest drivers for each card you have, saving them onto your hard drive for re-use whenever you need them again and install them, then it should be ok, if not the quickest way to fix a problem is re-install everything as you say its a dell you shaould have a restore cd to do it with

BevW
October 17th, 2004, 19:45
The windows xp home? yes, but the thing here is when I tried to reinstall, I don't have the product code number. I can't find it anywhere. did you peel it off the cd cover it came in and stick it on the pc?

my advice to anyone is never do that always keep on a plastic cd cover as you can install it on a different pc if you get one that does not come with an O/S, by ms user agreement once the p/id is on the pc you can only legally use it on that pc:(

ukwdwnut

what to see if it has a virus you mean?

could be worth a try wont harm will it

BevW
October 17th, 2004, 19:56
I have the plastic from the cd I just opened. but it didn't fit when I typed it in. The second set of number/letters is on digit too many. I tried skipping the first digit, then the last digit, and nothing happened except this little box telling me this wasn't the code. I couldn't reach into the computer and strangle the person telling me this, so I just put everything away.

I just now tried to turn the desktop back on, and it's doing a loop of booting up, shutting down, booting up, shutting down. And the color on the screen is awful...I don't know what happened, I don't know if it happened during the IT support help or what, but now I can't adjust the color of the monitor. There are days when I just want to chunk and run.

Oh, this has been going on for 3 days now.

ukwdwnut

October 17th, 2004, 20:00
Oh I have McAfee, I ran Adaware, spybot, stinger, etc etc etc...they all show I have a clean computer...THEN I ran something called..oh shoot....what was the name..anyway, it came up with about 4 different items..but it said that since it was a free version "We're so sorry, we can't clean this up for you...but you can purchase this disc for only $89.99 and you can just download from here" Oh great. Soooo, I went to the places where it showed I had problems, and i couldn't find them! You know c://windows/system/ etc etc etc.

October 17th, 2004, 20:01

Keith
October 17th, 2004, 20:01
first thing I ever do when buying a new pc if I don't build it myself is fdisk/format and reinstall.... of course, not all of them come with all the disks needed <grrrrr>

..BUT I'm betting if Bev did a complete reinstall, things would be VERY different

BevW
October 17th, 2004, 20:01

you cant even load drivers downloaded and saved on cd co it dont load the cd drivers, or never used to in 98 anyway. have you got the cd icon in my computer?

whats wrong with amd's then?

Well honestly, nothing ;-) I've had an athlon sitting in the lab doing all sorts of things and have yet to see a single problem with it... but somehow, how to explain this.... when I want to build a lovely new "feel good" christmas machine, I don't want anything other than intel :/ Perhaps I'll go and read the benchmarks and see if amd's 64bit stuff does better than the intel ones.. at the moment though, I know it's irrational, but I see intel as the "top quality" stuff :)

BevW
October 17th, 2004, 21:00
You guys still here?

I'm at a stuck point. I have a message here telling me that the upgrade can't setup due to a third party kernel?????

Ok here are the details of the message

Windows has detected that one or more protected core system files (kernel) on your computer have been modified. the Service Pack contains updated versions of those files, which work to provide a stable environment for your programs. Due to this modificatin, the Service Pack will not be installed. yadda yadda yadda...
So should I just reinstall the disc and not upgrade?

Mike...I can't do the file thing you sent to me. I don't think I"m in the right area. I went to Explorer, clicked on tools and I have this " Mail and News . Sychronize, Windows Update, show related links, and internet options" No folders link to click on.

Chances are slim the product code will work on both the laptop and desktop but time will tell.
In the mean time click on that windows update link and follow the instructions.
Hopefully it will download an update program before any updates.

Clicked on the update icon, and clicked on Notify me before any downloads and notify me after download is complete. That way I'll know what's going on....

Yes it did! and I feel so much safer now that Norton is up and running. I've got to go and purchase the real thing cos it's only a trial version. I had purchased the McAfee disc when I got the computer, but I can't find the disc. I don't know if the girls misplaced it, or if it got thrown away during my manic house cleaning binge a few months ago. You never know.

I get the feeling they've relaxed on the product ID activation a little.... which I know is uncharacteristic but still <G>

I installed my activation code on a desktop and a laptop and did the over the internet activation and it didnt complain at all! previously it's complained when installing on two virtually identical desktops... so I wonder if they're chilled out a bit

they have keith, it was to do with all the illega copies out there, and with them releasing SP2 they knew they would have problems with people unable to install it and have the upto date security features, but for the next version i dont think they will be so lax about it

2006 with lots of the important bits taken out :( can't BELIEVE they've taken winfs out of the core release.

ALTHOUGH, the 3d graphical interface, long overdue for windows, avalon I think it's called, will make the experience a bit nicer. I WOULD have been REALLY shocked at them for leaving it till 2006 but at least Servicepack2 makes xp a lot more usable.

when you installed spybot did you get, sdo exploit automatically, and when you scan then fix problems it says fix the rescan and its still there, well the only way to get rid of that is to hack the registry bev

keith does the sdo exploit entry do anything?

dont wanna scare you bev but its easy to do  :D

If I brought my pc with me, I'd look like that guy in the commercial...waiting at luggage pickup for the printer, desktop, fax machine... I can do that! We're not flying! bwahahahahahahaha

We'll just load the girls on the roof, and leave the luggage at home. That should work.

you should install XP anyway these days.. its core is a heck of a lot more stable than the 95/98/ME branch of windows and it comes with a load more nice to have "stuff" built in.

I'd recommend xp pro over home too but I accept most people don't need the extra stuff in pro. Either way, upgrade (but be prepared for the odd thing like old games to perhaps stop working)

I actually prefer 98 to XP. The other computer in my home is so much more slower than my Compaq Windows 98 computer. Why? Because XP is infested with Spyware, even with our programs, it still is slow, and we barely use it! My 98 computer works great for being an antique. :)

is your xp pc a low spec machine if it is install 98 on it, if its not, download and install spybot from the pcworld only site, also adaware, also make sure your firewall is enabled on the connection, run both the programs and that should get rid of all the cr*p, let me know how you get on and if it makes a difference :D

actually we have those programs.

I don't know though, I don't use it, it's my parents, they gave me my own computer which is the 98, and I love my 98. Sometimes they disable things without knowing it.

if its a branded pc it will have an intel sticker/logo thing on the front saying pentium II, pentium III or pentium 4, if you goto start>run>and type in dxdiag a screen will pop up and it will have the pc info on it, ie graphics memory, cpu and its speed etc etc
