I guess this could go either her or Gizmos but I need help so here we go.
I'm making CDs for all the participents of the meets. there are 2 of them, one Disney and one of Christmas music. I had to download a couple of songs from iTues for the Disney CD. Of course, iTunes will only let me burn the CD eight times. I have been told that something about a hidden file that says how many times the song has been burned and it can be deleted (I'm guessing a cookie-type deal). I need to know where to find this file as I need more than 8 CDs. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!

hi junior mickey
i wouldn't know where the file is, but why don't you upload the songs into another programme and then burn your CD's from there. For example use roxio, napster etc, put songs into library then burn on to new CD's. Don't know if it will work as l am still all new to my ipod and music downloads.

Doesn't work. I tried copying the list over into 3 different programs and it jams on the downloaded songs.

I know this sounds weird have you tried jigging the order of the songs in the playlist around? Not sure if that will break a carefully arranged list ;-) but my understanding is that the restriction is on a playlist rather than on the individual songs so if you jiggle the songs around a bit and call it a new playlist, you'll be able to do another 8 and so on..
or have you tried using toast or whatever cd writing application you use, to just do a "FULL CD COPY" of the completed cd from one to another? rather than writing out a new playlist

I tried using Easy CD Creator to make copies and it jams on the iTunes songs. I'll try jiggling the songs around tonight (better make track lists before I try that)

hi again
Only other thing l can suggest is to go to the message boards on the apple uk page. Comes under the support heading and there is a board for the ipods. (using ipod..) Found some of the people there helpful when l did not know how to get my napster music into itunes.

PS
To display hidden files and folders (Windows XP)
Open Folder Options in Control Panel.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.
On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Hidden files and folders will appear dimmed to indicate they are not typical items. Usually, hidden files are program or system files that should not be deleted or changed. To display other hidden files, clear (http://ms-its:C:WINDOWSHelpfolderop.chm::/HELP=glossary.hlp%20TOPIC=gls_clear) the Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) check box.
If you know the name of a hidden file or folder, you can search for it. For more information, click Related Topics.
If you want to see all file name extensions, clear the Hide file extensions for known file types check box.

Thanks Minnie :) I'll have to play when I get home. It would be easiest if I don't have to shuffle around the songs

well, im on a mac so the might be some slight changes, lemme see what i can do. the invisible file you guys have been talking about is .DS_Store this should be the same file used on the PC. im not sure about what the invisible file does anylonger, i used to think it controlled which songs that were purchased from itunes. however. i resently have felt more urges towards TAGS. as you might now, files can contain tags on all files from comments to extensions. i have tryed changing the extension to mp3 instead of m4p (which itunes uses for a download format) this file only plays on itunes still though. i am going to dive even more into the tags and try to see if there really is something there.
but to the burning problem, there shouldnt be any problem at all. itunes from there website says that there is unlimited burns per download. but, could it be the easy CD creator you are running? and is it only itunes songs? the application might not be able to read the m4p format like all other media players. hope i helped and pleaase excuse the bad grammer and spelling ect.
~edit: does anyone know how to access tags? and then i think we might be able to hack the extension :D , im not pirating or anything but just to widen my range of usability and learn more about computers. this might be the solution to junior mickeys problem also.

When I got to the 8th CD and tried doing No. 9 it says that iTunes downloads are limited to eight CDs.
Keith
October 18th, 2004, 22:15
Yes, playlists are limited to 8 burns to avoid people pirating albums over and over... songs aren't hence why jiggling the order should allow more than 8 to be burned :)
There *are* hidden files and there *are* application to unlock the songs, but really just like copying applications and so on, I don't think it's something to list on here :/

so can u import the other downloaded files into itunes, because itunes files can be burned as much as theyd like. "iTunes makes it wonderfully easy to create your own custom music CDs to play in your car or home stereo. Unlike some applications that limit the number of CDs you can burn, iTunes lets you burn as many custom CDs as you like. And now iTunes prints pro-quality inserts to accompany your mix.". straight from the site. and the link if theres any other questions: http://www.apple.com/itunes/burn.html . this does puzzle me alot though. i feel your dilema is not the itunes but the software you are using to burn, i'll be right back from the easy CD creator site in just a second.

I'm not using easy CD creator. I'm using iTunes
Thanks Keith. I guess I'll do different versions of the CD :)

then im lost, itunes doesnt stop you from burning more than 8 CD's. does the burn just stop or does a ( ! ) apear next to the song after burn? if ( ! ) apears, its probably from a lost song or broken link. this probably isnt your case but its a guess.
and i know that some software companys ARE creating jukeboxs that are limiting burns. itunes is still providing UNLIMITED burns though...
~edit: agh! another thought! wat are the playlist specs that you are trying to burn? and the format of the cd that you are trying to burn. if you are trying to burn audio format. it will be limited to 80 minutes or 1.2 hours of music. or mp3/data is the 700 MB i think. this wil be a huge difference. and jiggleing songs will only move the preffered songs to be burned first and forget the rest once you reach the 80 minute limit.

I get a message after the 8th that says that iTunes does not allow downloaded songs to be burned more than 8 times. I'm going to try Keith's suggustion of moving the play list around

Thank him for his help MM. I'll try shuffling the songs and see if that helps... this is annoying the heck out of me.

Great. The kid's on the site for an hour and a half and he already got himself in trouble.. :p
AWWWWWW no he hasn't!!!!!!!! :P
It's all JM! blame JM! :)
Nah, it's itunes strange protection and policy :/ lots of people have commented how weird it is. They make a big deal about "burning whatever you want" then you try and it tells you no.. but if you wiggle the names around, then it'll let you blah blah... It's just weird.
I think the aim is utterly worthy :) it's just I know we're all trying to be above board so I kinda feel bad about posting links to remove protection etc :(

Problem solved.
iTunes does not allow you to burn one particular playlist more than 8 times. So the way around this for me with this project is to switch one of the songs in the playlist (for example, instead of having Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, I can replace it with When You Wish Upon a Star and it is considered a new playlist)

Oh, he's in trouble all right, Keith, and I'm sending him off to bed without supper! :p
JM, I'm glad you figured it out!
TOM
October 19th, 2004, 02:12
hahaha, im back :D ,but reading this... i wonder if you change the name of the song slightly it will read as a new playlist... like add a period or something to the end... maybe just an extra space? but congradulations... you solved it

Ack, he caught me typing a snarky response and grabbed my computer from me. :D
For the uninitiated, Tom is my son, and he only wanted to help JM, not suffer this abuse from the keyboard of his old Mom.
There, I just totally embarassed him.

And MM, I think Tom spells better than I do. Spell check was made for people like me :D
