I've narrowed my new camera choices down to two. Cannon A75 and Nikon Coolpix 3200. They're both 2.3 megapixels. Anyone have any experience with either (or both) I can't decide!

I'm definitely a canon rather than a nikon fan but I've used both of those and they're both great cameras so you're not going to go wrong with either! Go to bestbuy or whereever and try both of them... see which you get along with.

That's the problem Keith. I like the feel of them both. My mother has a Cannon and my sister has a Nikon. They both love them which is making my decision harder. I'm leaning towards the Cannon just because I've read that you have a little more control.

I'd go Canon but ;-) then I would wouldn't I... seriously I dont think you can go wrong with either so it's down to stuff like do you like the look of one over the other? does one startup faster than the other? etc

Their specs are almost identical. Canon has CompactFlash cards which are slighly cheaper than the SD card that the Nikon takes. The Canon is slightly larger, but not enough to bother me.... I think I'll go with the Canon

Yeah.. SD probably a bit faster than compactflash but you can get large compactflash cards and they're cheaper. Get the canon ;-)

We use the Nikon and it's fine. Only issue we have is the batteries. Can't just carry a load of AAs around with you. Have to have the Nikon rechargeable thingy, or expensive 6v lithium batteries. Canon could be the same though, for all I know.

I have recharables :) My current Olympus is a battery hog

Also consider the software - the canon has a ridiculously easy interface. :D

That doesn't really matter since I use Photoshop to do my resizing and stuff

ive got a cannon A80 but i have not tried the other and only bought this because keith recomended it

to be honest i am a very "point and shoot" sort of person

and we are delighted with the results
if i had to find fault it is the speed between pressing the shoot button and it taking the photo --but that could be something i am doing wrong
it is only whe we are trying to catch the kids doing something silly we notice it

any one have any suggestions to speed it up --it is using auto and even with brand new batteries it is still the same

That's the downside to digital Steve. There is going to be a lag

Steve - I use 'sports mode' when shooting the kids, then go into rapid fire mode when shooting action shots or parades even. I delete the junk as I go along.

JM - what software will you use to import and catalog? I should have been a little more clear.

Ahhh, I don't catalogue. I just put the pictures onto a CD so I usually just use windows. Don't think I've ever used the software that came with my olympus

Try holding the shutter button half way down whilst you watch them play or whatever then when you see something you want, quickly press the button the rest of the way down. It should take the photo instantly.

I remember 'moaning' about the lack of instant photo taking to Keith when I first went digital.

I found that with my Nikon 2100, rechargeable batteries are the best option. I had to use normal batteries at the end of the trip last year and it just ate them up and didn't give much warning before they ran out. I missed the best shot of the trip because of Kodak camera batteries. :(
I'm training myself to do the 'half way down' button pressing thing. I'm bored with my Nikon now. I want a new camera.
