Anyone from the UK upgraded a rental car?
Did you do it before you left or on arrival?
If you did it in the UK, did you get charged a fee to change the booking?

Almost every time I go to collect the rental car I`m asked if I would like to up-grade "for a small additional charge sir"!
I would suspect that if you really wanted to up-grade, it would be cheaper to sort it out in the UK before you leave, but that is only my assumption.

Your post made me laugh Lesley - I think most of us spend time trying to avoid being talked into upgrading our cars at the pickup points

Just check out the price of whatever vehicle you want on Dollar's website. The ubiquitous Voyager is often available for $199 a week. They usually have loads of those knocking about.
The last couple of times I have payed for the car in this country just to save messing about over there. However you can barter with these people - tell them that someone said you could have the (whatever car) for two and six and it's only sixpence on your website anyway. Often they have not got the car you have paid for and will be giving you an upgrade anyway. They just try it on! They are just salespeople at the end of the day - grind them into the dirt!

We were told by travel city that if we upgraded while still within the uk it would work out miles cheaper, we did not upgrade because we were assured that the allocated car was of an ample size for my family, and this turned out to be the truth, but it still did not stop the dollar rep lying to me at the desk, basically telling me that there would be no room in the boot for all our luggage and the car would be a tight fit
I do agree that they do have to make their commission, but they should also instill in their employees to treat people with some respect.
What is so laughable about my whole experience is that it was actually dollar who told travel city the size of car to allocate us in the first case, then when we get to florida, this jumped up rep is trying to give me the hard sell, sorry, but I just cannot stand their attitude sometimes.
It turned out she was trying to get me to upgrade to a mini van, which anyone knows, mini vans do not have a boot, so where would all those cases go? on the spare seats of the mini van ofcourse! come on dollar, give me credit for having atleast an ounce of common sense.
Rant over.

Red could sit in the back seats - the convertibles they have are four seater - be careful - with the hood down - the boot (trunk) is pretty small.
At least you know what you are paying if you get it through airline network.
More fun trying to haggle with the Dollar rep though - especially after the flight and all the customs and security malarkey - usually ready for a good old chinwag then :D
