I was thinking about getting DS an IPOD for Christmas. (shhh!) I was wondering what is the difference between IPOD and Mini-IPOD?

I was doing a little bit of research on the IPOD and I came across this link (apparently applies to earlier generation)

Interesting customer feedback :) (http://www.ipodsdirtysecret.com/) (creative feedback :) )

Anyway, I was wondering if this is something that you have to worry about anymore?

OOOH DC...

ABSOLUTELY NO HELPFUL INFORMATION, but I'm glad you asked the question...DS is also asking for an ipod for Christmas...and I'm clueless....

A regular iPod is going to hold A LOT more stuff than a mini for not much of a price difference. I have a 15 GB 4th Gen and I love it. So far, I have about 100 CDs uploaded and there is 10 GB of room left!

No feedback on the video link because I couldn't be bothered waiting for it to download ;-) but...

I have a 40gig ipod and a mini ipod.

I've never come close to using all the 40gig and I totally prefer the size of the mini ipod. I admit either is great so it's hard to criticise the large ones and its true that for not much money, they store more... but the mini ones fit in pockets so much more nicely.

Difference is basically the physical size and the size of storage.

If it were me.. having owned both... If you asked me which one I'd want for day to day use, the mini ipod wins.

I guess I should add that the other day someone went on and on about a sony device. Can't say I've looked but I will do.. can't see it being as cute as a mini-ipod but ok ;-)

mmm...think think think...Rob has asked me what I want for Crimbo...I'd love an I-Pod but they are a bit pricey...any cheaper alternatives about? Or should I plump for the I-pod??? Should've bought it in the States but didn't really think of it at the time!

Sungal,
I am also looking at a less expensive options

Creative NOMAD MuVo² (http://shopping.yahoo.com/p:Creative%20Nomad%20MuVo2%204GB%20MP3%20Player:19 91454004;_ylt=Ane1lsn_upwfE1nWrUPG.Yb4SHAD;_ylu=X3 oDMTBqaG0waWU5BF9zAzU3NjkwMzYwBHNlYwN6aXA-?cb=1&changezipcode=1)

Manufacturer's Description

Unlike the mini iPOD, you can replace the battery yourself on this model... and the playback time is 10hours (or 17?) versus 10 on the mini iPOD.

Unfortunately, it is not rated as highly as the mini iPOD in ease of use department. mini iPOD playback formats: MP3, AAC, WAV, AA, AIFF, Apple Lossless and Creative NOMAD MuVo² playback formats: MP3, WMA, WAV

(I have seen some positive feedback on the customer feedback, though.)

My best price for a mini iPOD (incl shipping) is $244.99 +59.00 for the extended warranty (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/72104/wo/2U4TKd5Z1RLZ2UoIG8H1VeCNCVh/3.0.11.1.0.6.9.3.0.3.13.1) (covers replacement of battery up to 2 years) Otherwise, the battery replacement out of warranty is $105.95 per unit. (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/battery.html)

For the Creative NOMAD MuVo² $178.99 -$50.00 rebate (NewEgg.com) + $14.32 for extended warranty...

I agree with Keith. I have a 40 gig Ipod and a mini Ipod. I use my mini ipod much more. I keep my regular size around where my speakers are so that I can use it as a sort of stereo in my room. To carry around I would get a mini. They hold about 1000 songs.

Sungal! Shame on you!

DS, going to give another view...

We have the mini and the 40GB and DS loves his 40 because he brings his homework to school on it (he's big into doing video projects lately) and doesn't really care about the size of the physical box. DD has the mini and loves it, it's just perfect for her. Her problem is that she wants a jacket to match every outfit.

Oh, and you can replace the physical battery, too. I keep waiting for them to make them completely replaceable, too.

Keith
November 16th, 2004, 13:40
I still kinda want a photo ipod but I just can't bring myself to given they didn't make any way to get digital camera photos into it without buying a belkin media reader :/

Mickeymac,
Is it a DIY replace the battery or do you send it in to have it replaced?

-DC :ears:

Mickeymac

It's a DIY battery. I'll ask DS for the link. You can ask him all about it (he wears the dang thing all the time) if you want.

Oh, and for an unofficial poll, all of his friends have the minipod. He says the girls love theirs, but the guys wish they had 'more power.' Take it for all it's teenage testosterone worth.

Keith, I wish I had it too. I don't mind getting the media reader, but afraid that the second generation of the photopod won't need it.

Keith
November 16th, 2004, 14:19
/me hides his pink mini ipod, dusts off the 40gig monster and says in a deep manly voice "yeah tis right that tis... guys need POWER!"

Go on now Keith, bring out the pink one again, we won't laugh...honestly.. :laughat:

Andrew was on about the ipod again last night, and so I subtely asked him "Well which one do you want?" His reply? The regular one mom, I don't think any guy wants to own ANYTHING that is proceeded with the word "MINI." Point taken...but I still prefer it...can't we just change the name?

Applie iTunes software for Windows price $395.00 (in a store)

Apple 40 GB iPod M9268LL/A
Included accessories: Dock, remote, carrying case, earbud headphones, AC adapter, dock connector to FireWire cable and 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire adapter.
$367.04 (online)

Apple 40 GB iPod from HP (MP103)
Hewlett Packard Office Electronics
Included accessories: Earbud headphones, PC connectivity cabling (USB 2.0 and FireWire (IEEE 1394), power adapter

M9268LL/A (Same model as above, but no mention of a carrying case)

How do you tell if something is 4th generation? (Is that a good thing?)

Mickeymac

the 4th generation adds the new click wheel. Before that, your navigational buttons were right below the vieiwing window.

Photo source Cirtcuit City is the one.

I would most likely buy through uPromise's Apple link using the educational store so that I could get the discount and the uPromise points. ;)

If the cheaper store was local, I would go with that. I'm not sure if I would buy online for $20 less, unless that included shipping. I'd probably scour discounts and looked for coupon codes until I could really make it work. How sad is that?

Also look at jr.com - I think they were giving out free GreenDay tees with purchase. :D

An ipod is just another type of mp3 player although many would say it's the best one out there.

It has a variety of nice features that some of the others don't have and certainly it would take some doing to beat the design of the mini ipod.
