Summer Breeze well fed up with her new laptop.
Every time she goes on the internet Internet Explorer says it has found an error and will close.
I watched her loose 4 threads or PMs in the space of about 45 mins. Sometimes it will go for 5 or 10 mins before crashing other times it is only 2 mins.
Any suggestions?

presume its running XP, could be the fact that the network router you have is dropping the internet connection, it happens with my wireless router now and again and i have to reset it, also as JM says run windows update, do you lose the connection if your on the same time as the wife

do you have a firewall in place? Have you run a virus scan?

On windows XP. No more windows updates to download. Going to log off to see if that helps. SB will still be logged on.

who is your broadband provider, sometimes if its like telewest they go off the mac address of your network card, so if another card access your broadband it will be denied, but if your logged in then its ok

There's a load of new virii, spyware and adware out there that are attacking Internet Explorer.
Sadly the only fix at this time is to reinstall XP.
To avoid the problem until there is a fix I suggest using Netscape or Opera.
Does the error mention a missing file?

Shogun,
I had a similar problem before--it crashed so many times, I got to where I would copy a file over into word before tranferring the message to the board. The vexing part was that it was that it crashed on the replys took a lot of thought and a lot of time to compose (almost like it was timing out). Oddly enough, I cleared the cookies and it stopped 99% of the crashes.
If summer breeze is done with IE, in addition to the ones that JD mentioned, there is also another browser called Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/) that is available as a free download.

It's always hard to diagnose without being there.. sometimes it's easy to think the worse even though when sitting in front of the machine, I'd see a simple solution but.... it sounds like either dodgy/buggy software/driver having been installed or a virus/worm. Basically if it was ever attached to the internet before SP2 or other firewall was installed, there's an excellent chance that it got a virus. Installing sp2 stops new ones but won't help things if you've already got a virus on there. Last time I setup a pc, it took less than 3 minutes on the internet for it to get infected and that's not doing anything, just left it sitting there.
Soooo :/ reinstallation and SP2 BEFORE connecting to the internet could well help but I know it's a bit drastic on a brand new machine. May well be worth trying www.mozilla.org for firefox or something

Thanks for those links DC and JD. Now downloading both Opera and Modzilla to play around :)

Thanks for all your ideas.
What if uninstall windows sp2 and reinstall it would that help.
very unlikely unless sp2 was causing the problems itself (which is unlikely.. did you have the problems before sp2?)

Can you get any more info about the crash? sometimes you can click on a DETAILS button/link and it'll give you info about the problem. That'd be useful to copy and paste

try having a look in the event viewer, by right clicking on my computer, then manage then click on the event viewer, then application, look for any red circles with a white cross(which are the errors) then double click on the errors to see what info is given then it might be worth sending the report to microsoft, or look up the errors on the MS knowledgebase, hope this can help in solving anything

Well from the girl who just saved all her files on the USB jump drive...took her Dell Notebook to the computer guru and had the hard drive totally wiped out! I will now be ultra careful running my virus protection and spyware protection! If I wasn't so dependent on this machine I would just chuck it out the window...
I have heard firefox is a really cool web browser...I just don't adjust to change well!

Hi there!
I hope you managed to get the problem sorted out. If not, I only really have one suggestion.
My brother-in-law had problems with his computer constantly locking up, his broadband connection going slower than his old dialup setup and losing the internet connections galore. I came to the conclusion that the only sure fire way to solve this was to re-format the hard drive and re-install all his software. I know this is quite a last chance saloon suggestion but it certainly fixed ALL his problems. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a recovery disk so I had to rebuild the whole installation from scratch :sigh: but if only cost me a couple of hours and my eye-sight
Did you buy your PC new? If so, there may have been a recovery disk lurking at the bottom of the box your PC came in. Just pop this in to your CD-ROM and re-boot your computer. It will then format your drive and put the machine back to the factory state. That would be your problem solved :excited:
Hope this is the case :fingers:
P.S. His broadband is now quicker than ever and machine runs like it was new! :nutty:

I LOVE the feel of a newly installed pc... all nice and fresh and new. Boots up more quickly, runs faster and generally more reliable (till youput loads of stuff back on ;-)
So yeah I agree... although I know it's a pain to do.
