If you can't log on to the internet (from another computer)
try this WinsockXPFix (http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/WinsockxpFix.exe)
It fixes the Ip errors caused by removing Spyware and Adware as well as firewalls.
Here's a new web browser that looks and feels like Internet Explorer but it works!
No holes as of yet for Spyware, Adware, and pop-ups to break through!
Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/)
I'll post more fixes as I find them.
Cheers!

Summer Breeze,
I have not tried the Firefox browser, but I have used the
Mozilla browser suite (also on the same website) (http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/) for years with no problems. It is a very good product. The Mozilla browser is a little bit different from IE, but I was able to catch on right away. (Firefox is the new and improved product just released Nov 9th)
The Mozilla Project is Open source code Freeware. Here is a link to more infor about the Mozilla Project (http://www.mozilla.org/editorials/mozilla-overview.html) and Mozilla FAQ (http://www.mozilla.org/start/1.5/faq/)
Here is a link to a story about Firefox (http://news.com.com/Study+Firefox+still+gaining+on+Internet+Explorer/2100-1032_3-5435176.html)

Actually although v1 of firefox was just released, it's been around for a lonnnnnnggg time in it's beta test forms and I've used it on both the mac and pc. It's *excellent*. Fast, tabbed browsing, blocks pop ups etc.
Every now and again you'll see a site that doesn't work quite as it should so you may still need IE, but for 95% of cases, firefox is really brilliant.

Sorry. I should have mentioned that everything I post has been tried and tested on unsuspecting members of the American public by myself. http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

where I think it's really good is the tabbed part.
I have it setup so that any time I click a link in email or whatever, it just opens a new tab. So I have just one browser window but loads of web pages each in its own tab. really handy.

Mike this would be the link for tabbed browsing (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/tabbed-browsing.html)

It's in tools-options-advanced mr.nut :)
Actually there's a plugin which you can get later which actually does the job a little better.

cant see that its doing anything different keith
jeez its b****y fast though
Keith
November 19th, 2004, 17:41
Tis fast isnt it!
If you want a nice single window "all pages in tabs" thing... go to TOOLS - EXTENSIONS
choose more extensions which will take you to a web page.. choose TABBED BROWSING and then install quickTabPrefToggle 0.0.4. You have to set its options but once done, works really nicely

ok ta
there is one annoying thing i've found when you reply to a post and then want to scroll down to submit it you have to click outside the text window and then it works

Update.
I don't like anti virus programs as I find they choke your machine enough to become a virus themselves.
With that in mind I've spent lots of time trying to put together a custom suite that offers the same as the big ones but is small, unobtrusive, and free.
Here you have my custom, "you can't touch me" internet surfing suite.
Browser is Firefox (http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox&os=win&lang=en-US). Clean and fast.
Firewall is ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp). Powerful (sometimes too much so!) yet small and stealthy.
SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2471&file=11&evp=2470f9bfb0cc682334ff8c4459556118) kills em all. Speed your machine up!
AdAware (http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=506&file=9&evp=8dbaff7daca8f4b55bf695220993fc0f) gets what SpyBot misses.
I'm running a clean machine here and this is what I install on my customers computers on a daily basis.
I've yet to hear a complaint from one of them.
Why is there no virus remover?
If Norton and McAffe and all are aware of the virus, it isn't worth the hackers time to run it!
The best way to stop a virus attack is to prevent it. That's what my suite does.
Keith suggests Add Pandaware or SOME av product to your suite along with an insistence that people scan everything manually on download and ALL email attachments before excuting them.. *AND* that includes word documents etc.. *AND* insist on turning off html view in email.
If anyone wants to get really geeky I tell you how to close port 80 and 5578.
My machine shows as 100% stealth.
Go here to look at yours! http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/eek.gif
SheildsUp! (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2)
Hope this helps everyone have a better experience.
If you feel so inclined I'm listed on PayPal and I like dark chocolate and deep red merlots. http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey.
It's boring being a good boy.
The Doctor said I needed to find something to do with my time other than (ahem) 'socializing" in the bars.
Anyway, I have no problem shooting down Norton and Mcaffe when they are really nothing other than unnecessary overkill! http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/tongue.gif

JD, I'm not sure how you're protecting against emails with a virus payload or damaging macros etc.(unless youre using the zonealarm antivirus package which just does the same as norton/mcafee) I totally agree with your choice of software though, mainly because I use exactly the same :) especially zonealarm.
I even agree that virus scanners can slow down the system by checking everything :( It's just that I still see a lot of client machines sitting behind good firewalls which have allowed emails through with dodgy content in.
I've found mcafee AV to be the best of the bunch

Although I don't run I guess it was a bit arrogant of me not to post it.
ThunderBird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/) is made by the same folks as FireFox.
I've installed it in corporate enviroments and they have had no problems.
The way I avoid virus emails is I set up a dummy account. I use that address for any forms that must be filled and check it via webmail.
But I still get email from that Sarah girl.

...and now I'm gonna sound like I'm just picking <G> but the problem is when someone who has your personal email address gets a virus, it'll often fire one off to you. It'll get through the firewall because incoming email is ok and before long, bang :( That's why I still think that mcafee/norton/zonealarm av or some kind of antivirus checking at the network border (Internet provider for home use) is still needed for most people.
That's before we talk about downloading files from the internet with a virus in them... or using CDroms/dvds with virus etc etc. Not all threats from from the internet
ps. Netscape have said they will be releasing a new netscape based on firefox and from insiders at netscape, they're sounding pretty excited about it. If it turns out to just be firefox for aol then who cares.. but it may be worth a look http://moz.sillydog.org/archives/000465.html

At this point I see getting a virus like, well... getting a virus!
We all get colds (Gezhundheit, MickeyMac) and some worse.
Some virus can be removed and some hit us very hard.
This best way not to get one is to take steps to prevent them.
If you do get one, remove it, find your supposed friend and strangle them for sending you junk mail in the first place! http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I'd rather do the prevention thing and have a fast machine than have an A/V program bog down my computer.
And with that said, watch my computer crash and I'll be offline for a month! :afraid:

Completely agree there.. especially with the strangling <G> but if someone gets one via email, or cdrom, or by downloading something from the net, the problem is that the solution you propose at the mo, won't prevent the virus or tell anyone they've got it :(
I'd rather do the prevention thing and have a fast machine than have an A/V program bog down my computer.
Can't argue there :( they can certainly slow things down at times.. but compared to downloading a file from the net... running it... and a few days later hard disk being trashed by a virus I didn't know I had :((
And with that said, watch my computer crash and I'll be offline for a month! :afraid:
 yeah always the way isn't it

Oh!
I see your point.
I scan every download before I open it.
I don't need an A/V program running constantly in the background.
And trust me. I'm a 24 hour a day downloader.
As long as the program is not executed or uncompressed the virus is dormant.
Just scan it free, online with PandaWare.
Have I made enough product endorsements today? http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Do you just need one anti virus program thing on your computer or do you need more than one? Please, don't get too technical

Yes one.
Just don't make it automatic. Scan your own email and attachments.
