Err sorry about this but, Keith, just before you go, which printer is best the Epson R800 or the new Canon one (I don't know which one  ) Chris has been talking about a new printer. He's over the moon with the G6 so now he wants a decent printer. He did say he wanted A3 but I don't think he'll ever use it. I know he was very interested in the R800 a while ago but he's been talking about a new Canon (or was it a HP  ) It's just that even though I said he couldn't have a present for Christmas, I thought I might get him a surprise pressie. Or is a printer something he should choose himself.

Any ideas?

yeah well things move on and basically the new canon is better (slightly ;-) it's faster, smoother, quieter and looks nicer.

The only thing is......
The R800 using pigment inks which are likely to be MUCH more long lived
the new canons still use dye based which can fade much more readily

To be honest, unless you're selling prints, I wouldn't worry too much and the new canons are .. well.... *wow* the 8500 in particular is staggeringly perfect ;-)

(dont recommend HP any more for inkjets since they started doing nasty things like making ink cartridges TIME OUT so you have to buy new ones)

I have an hp... I used to swear by them (now it's mainly at them).

A year after I got it.. I'd only used it a few times... mainly black and white. Colour stopped working. I took the cartridge out.. and it was full. well 4/5ths full. So put it back in.. why isn't it working?

Installed some HP management software... came up "cartridge expired"

phoned them up... oh yes they say, we EXPIRE cartridges based on time to keep the quality up!

BUT BUT BUT its FINE! last time I used it a week before it was fine.. I want to USE the ink I PAID for.

Sorry sir. AND none of the ink people could disable the "timer"

PS. the replacement cartridge would've been 30quid.... but I just sold the printer on ebay instead.

So that's that.. last time I'd ever buy an hp inkjet

Oh my gosh. I think that is what is happening here. I have a "check cartridge" message and can't believe that I am out of ink already as I rarely use it.

Don't tell me that I'm going to have to put up with that sort of gouging. :(

You have two good choices here Wendy. I personally would go with the Canon, I have last years model and love it. After 3 different printers in the last year this was a god send. One thing to consider with the Canon is the type of photo paper you use with it. With my Canon I have tried HP and Kodak papre of various quality with poor results on the other hand the Canon paper produces lab quality. also the canon paper can be hard to find only one shop in my town sells it. Good luck with you choice:-)

That's very true... I tried hp/epson paper with the new canon and it works perfectly which can be really useful.

I have a hp photosmart 1315. One day, I started getting a message that says, "Color Print Cartridge Incorrectly Installed" Remove the color print cartridge and reinstall it... I had been using this cartridge for ages (it had been warning me about the ink levels before--which I just ignore until it won't print anything on the page :D ).

I removed and reinstalled it and it still says, "Color Print Cartridge Incorrectly Installed" Remove the color print cartridge and reinstall it...

So, I just hit ignore an it just carries on printing.... (very strange...)

i had this for a while until i reset the cartridge by putting tape over certain points on the back install it and that resets it. also if you refill carts they dont always show true ink levels and this cures that problem too, will look it up for you to see if that cures it, ok DC :)
