The camera may be outputting it's best quality but is Ulead set to digitize with the best codec?

MPEG files
24 Bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Frame-based

Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

Good burn settings.
Can you view the video on the computer before the burn?
How are you putting the video into the puter?
I think the settings are too low as the computer is copying the video from your camera.

Good.
The video looks fine on computer playback.
Frame rate is fine. If you could push it to 29.9 all the better.
Try that new burn and I'll get back to you.

Hope it's working Mike!

Try this.

WinDV (http://windv.mourek.cz/)

Install it and use it to capture DV from your cam. You can set it to capture Type 1 or Type 2 AVIs...if you are using Windows Movie Maker, capture as Type 1. Most other video editing software uses Type 2 AVIs. If you are having problems after that, something may be wrong with the codecs your are using to view the file or something is wrong with your video display.

Fire wire is the best way to capture video. Maybe WinDV will give a better USB capture.

Close your ears now, BM.

Is the pixleation coming from your computer dvd or the tele's dvd?

Does the camcorder have firewire/ilink as well as usb2 or just usb2? often lower res output goes through usb2 for quick movies and proper output only goes through the firewire port (of course, if it only has usb2 like some of the new ones then ok.. just trying to think of options <G>)

FireWire is a pretty starightforward connection like a network card. Any of the recognizable names will do.

ukwdwnut
December 11th, 2004, 23:57
is there more than one standard or just the one? is what i meant sorry JD :D

i know there are different cables for different devices

Keith
December 11th, 2004, 23:59
there's ilink which is sonys name for firewire... interchangeable.
There's small fw connectors and large (check whats on your camera, probably small and whats on the card you buy and then buy a suitable cable)
there's also fw400 and fw800 your camera will prob be fw400

JacksDad

IEEE-1394 is the standard in the US.
I believe UK uses the same.

will look in the manual, and buy a card to suit, or should i just get the 800, will the camera work like usb 1.1 and 2 does, but just work at the slower rate

thanks for the help guys

just an update ive burnt some of the holiday onto a dvd-rw and it looks a bit jerky, like when i use v/studio 8 in mpeg mode it looks jerky, but when i transfer in avi format its not. any ideas, i know the burning s/w encodes the video whilst burning(only cos i said so) whats the best format to transfer in mpeg or avi?

JacksDad
December 12th, 2004, 00:17
Def on the avi.
An 800 FireWire should step down to 400 if need be.
That's it. You were not getting a clean capture.
Always AVI and highest quality. Then back up the AVI on a DVD data disc.

ukwdwnut

ukwdwnut,
I haven't done any DVD's since last year. I ran into all sorts of trouble with huge file sizes. And, the .avi format only recorded about 20mins worth of movie on a 4.7gb DVD. How are you doing on yours?

Last year, the buzz word was DIVX (http://www.divx.com/divx/) as the file compression system of the future. I haven't bothered to see how that is coming along. I haven't used it, yet--so, I can't give you any testimonals on it. I used Roxio Easy DVD creator and it wasn't too bad, although I found it pretty time consuming trying to the edits and what have you.

( I believe a terrabyte of storage is what I need to get all my video in one place... Have you seen any good deals on external hard drive storage? :D )

i did hear that nero express v6, would compress down to almost nothing, thats what i was told anyway. would also like to know how/what s/w you need to convert to quicktime too please, any thoughts. :D

did ask jo once but she never let on what s/w just said there is converters out there

dc i'm using easy cd creator 6, i have 7 also gonna load that later and have a crack at it, also used ulead videostudio 8 too, which is pretty good for effect and audio etc, but i just cant get a good quality using usb2, so a firewire card is called for me thinks :D

I'm surprised that it would make any difference. I thought that usb2/firewire was just a means to transfer data.

I can tell you that you don't want to use usb1 (from personal experience... something like 2 hours to transfer a file on usb1 versus 10 mins on usb2...this was because my drivers for usb2 got messed up and somehow it defaulted to usb1...'til I got on the phone with Dell service to get it fixed... Another one of those frustrating speed bumps on the way to making movies!  ) :D . Have they made improvements on the speed of the data transfer on firewire? Last year when I was making dvds, I thought my usb2 was running faster than firewire.

-DC :ears:

Keith

usb was never really designed as a fast file transfer mechanism, it was designed to be a trouble free, plug and play replacement for parellel/serial/keyboard/mouse ports which are all pretty slow. Of course as time went on, usb was so simple to use it was a big hit and all sorts of devices appeared. Firewire still feels better to me when transferring large files. The system doesn't seem to slow as much and even though usb2 in theory is up there with firewire400 in terms of theoretical speed, in practice fw still seems better to me (although I have a usb2 card reader which seems amazingly fast).

It definitely was the case that some camcorders only used usb as a fast and simple way to transfer stills and "small" video clips. There's no reason for that now with usb2 really, but apparently it's still the case on some camcorders.

They have made speed advances on firewire... just as there's usb2, there's now firewire800 which is twice as fast as firewire400 and is probably the fastest transfer you'll get.. until the next standard emerges of course :)

dcfromva
December 12th, 2004, 17:02
Keith,
In order to run FW800, is it like upgrading to USB2...Do you have to have the device that is rated for it (camera), the actual cable that is capable of the data transfer speeds and then the card that interfaces with the computer along with the drivers that run it?

Or, can you just plug another card with drivers into your computer and away you go?

-DC :ears:

ukwdwnut
December 12th, 2004, 17:24
keith, just had a look at the manual and i wont need a fw 800 card which is £40 odd as the camera wont use the speed, so im gonna for a fw400 card and appropriate cable

JacksDad
December 12th, 2004, 17:25
The device has to capable of 800.
Then, yes, after that it's usb2.
Keith's right about usb. It's an abused option.
Firewire is much cleaner.
Nuts issue is that video is so data intensive usb can't handle the large transfer.

good lucky nutty :) Ive seen firewire fix more than its fair share of such problems so I've got my fingers crossed.

Hardly anything uses fw800 yet.. eventually the prices will come down but yeah there's still a premium at the mo.

thanks keith, no point in getting the 800 card as i wont have anything that will use it, would not mind paying double what the 400 card costs but not quadruple, thats just taking the p :D

Mikey, dont wanna insult your wiseness, but can I ask if you finalised the dvd-r before trying to play it in your player? if you did I humbly ask your forgiveness :hehe:

Thing is, with my panny, the disc is finalised on the panny, this then makes it a normal dvd, what is normal hey?
Then it plays or is said to play on most dvd players, it certainly plays on my lads playstation 2, so I am presuming it will play on other dvd players.
Thing is, when dvd players first came out, they were fussy which discs they would play, but the other day, saturday in fact, was in town shopping and noticed a dvd player for about £80 which claimed to play a host of dvd formats including dvd-r's.
Hope you get sorted mate.
