Julie Andrews, Dick Van Dyke, and Co-composer Richard Sherman were in attendance to showcase the all-new transfer of the film, with restored sound and picture. The DVD includes this restored cut and the film has never looked so good. The DVD also includes a "Disney enhanced" Home Theater Mix which makes the film sound even better at home.
The DVD also includes a very interesting retrospective featuring Andrews, Dyke, and Sherman, as well as a reconstruction of a deleted song from the film, "Chimpanzoo."
The absolute best feature on the disc, other than the gorgeous print of the movie, is the documentary "The Making of Mary Poppins." The 50-minute documentary takes a look a retrospective look at the film, by utilizing many period interviews and make-up-tests. "The Deconstruction of a Scene" looks at how many of the amazing effects were achieved in 1964. This portion was on display at the massive party Disney threw for the release of the disc.
Held in the Grand Ballroom at the Hollywood and Highland complex, guests were able to make hats, take pictures, or even fly a kite in honor of the DVD. Live penguins were also on display. "The Cat That Looked at a King," a new animated short featuring Sarah Ferguson, Tracey Ullman, and David Ogden Stiers, was also on display at the party; the all-new sequence appears on the 2nd disc of the film with an introduction by Julie Andrews.
Also in attendance at the event were George Lopez, Larry Hagman, and Jack Klugman; Glynis Johns, who played Winifred Banks, also attended the event.
The 2-disc set is available today, December 14, and is very much worth checking out.
