If you find out you're going to Disney about 4 or 5 months in adavance, you might want to tell the little ones 2 or 3 months in advance. Trust me, we told my little brother, and that's all he can talk about!

my advice is to not tell them until the night before, if at all. Less talking more sleeping, eh?

You mean my telling (at Christmas time) my little six year old relative that he is coming to visit and go to WDW in the summer, and sending him a WDW parks "kit" as well as having little Disney things to send him each month until he gets here isn't a good idea?
I don't have to live with him, of course. :D

There is no stopping the Mouse in a young ones eyes.
Two years later Jack asks me if Mickey is going to throw a Birthday Party for me this year. (MNSSHP)
I looked his mother in the eye and told him yes. http://www.wdisneyw.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I always tell my kids the minute we know 100% we are going. Yes, they talk about it all the time but I love hearing them go on and on about it.

When we took our first set of Granddaughters to WDW in 2001 they had NO IDEA they were going to WDW. We flew them to VA from IN. Then we drove them to FL to visit their great grandmother. When we left Mom's we told the girls we were going to see the mountains (hey we didn't lie). I even took a circuitous route to get to the WDW entrance. In retrospect I now wish we had gone through the Main Gate. Anyway, when we got to WDW I was in the wrong lane but got stopped by a stop light. I mentioned that there was WDW to the right but got very little reaction from the girls (they were still looking for the mountains). When I made a U-Turn at the next light the girls asked if we were going shopping. Donna said "Well, I thought we would check into the hotel first." Needless to say they then went bonkers. Couldn't do this with the second set since they knew they were going to WDW. Now the youngest (a boy who is 5) knows that his turn will be coming up and keeps bugging his mom about when is it his turn. That will be Summer 2006.

We booked back in September last year and are going in May this year. We will tell our kids (daughter aged 10 & son 12) on the Morning we leave (that's the plan!). It's an absolute nightmare trying to keep it quiet from them, since a few of our friends & relatives know and we are excited ourselves.
Our kids know we are going away in May (we had to request time off from their schools) and occaisonally they ask "where" for which we normally say "It's difficult to make up our mind when there are so many places we like". In previous years we've either driven to France or flown to Portugal. It will get particularly tricky on the day before since we are staying in a hotel (Ramada Plaza) near Gatwick the night before, but by that time it will just have to remain a surprize. I know our daughter will love the whole thing but my son doesn't particularly enjoy flying and initially might think that (dare I say it!) he is too old for a Disney holiday. I'm sure he will love it once we are there, particularly Epcot & MGM. The multitude of restaurants should keep him happy as well.

I am going abit againest the grain here, but we tell ours about 9 months in advance they are 12 11 9. They can then get excited with us ie watching dvd's holiday videos, buying new clothes looking on the web and in books, for us thats half the fun !!

Caitie is now in the process of planning her next trip to WDW. She makes sure we know she's going. What have I created?

We tell Becca as soon as it is booked. I love the excitement and quite often instigate the conversations. When I do the school run I have to swing around the corners (safely!) so that they can pretend to be on Big Thunder Mountain, we also go down a steep hill which becomes splash mountain (get to the bottom and everyone shouts SPLASH - you get the picture). I wouldn't swap the endless chatter for the world - it's part of the magic.

HOW can you keep it a secret from 10-12 year olds? They pack for themselves, dont they? So how would they know what to pack?
Im 13, and when I was 10 and right now I was OFFICIAL PLANNER OF VACATION for my family. My parents got the resort, plane tickets, car, and PS's but I have planned the rest down to the minute, a paper for each day with a schedule of what park(s) we are going to, MUST-DO rides, and dinner/evening parade plans. Its soooo fun! My parents cant put up with it...oh well only 4-5 weeks!
