View Full Version : Ok, so Rainforest Cafe is not so good?

I saw in a post below that Rainforest Cafe leaves a lot to be desired...poor service, so-so food...is this true? We'll be going in June with our to-be 16m old...I was thinking this might be a good place to go for a sit-down meal. (What I thought would be decent food for us and an atmosphere that she'd really like)

What sit-down places would be good for a toddler, yet have good food and not super $? How about Sci-Fi at MGM? Suggestions?

Well first of all, I hadn't tried sci-fi diner before december but I LOVED it :) can't wait to go back. It was dark sooooo if that's a problem with a toddler then :/

Rain forest cafe is expensive for what you get and I'd never go there for the quality of food :) but it's an ok experience if you fancy a change.

Looks like i will have to stand up for the rain forest cafe, we love eating there, the ribs are sound, the kids love the atmosphere, we tend to go mid afternoon when its quiet and the service has always been great.

The sci-fi have eaten there once and unfortunatley mt hamburger came cooked with some of the plastic wrapping still on it, ok they didnt charge us for the meal and my irish coffee contained no coffee just pure whisky, but it did put me off eating there :D

I've only been to Sci-Fi once and once was enough thank you very much.

We've always had good food at Rainforest - not so hot service though. A lot of young kids are scared by the effects in the restaurant - the thunderstorms get loud and one small girl we saw made a run for it when the elephants kicked off. :runaway:

I love Sci Fi...we've never had a problem with service or food. I love the movie loop too. Rainforest is great for atmosphere, but the food is pricey for what you get. And if you go in the evening, the wait is horrendous! Service? What service...it stunk. RainForest is not part of Disney so you don't get Castmembers, you get waiters...some with attitude. I think they've been in the jungle too long!

Have to admit, they do have some attitude :)

We got dumped on a table in the middle of the main throughway. After I'd been knocked about a trillian times by waiters going past and finally narrowly avoided having the largest salad I've ever seen dumped on my head  I said enough is enough and asked the salad dropper could he find us a better table. As he was picking up salad from all around me, he looked at me in amazement and said "why do you want to move?????" oh you know, I tend to enjoy the food on a plate, not dumped on my head?

They finally moved us to a table right next to the other one (which meant only one lane of traffic by us, not two) but it TOTALLY threw the waiter who kept going to the empty table and looking around for us.

It's a little known fact, but those angry looking apes in rainforest cafe aren't artificial... they're rainforest cafe customers still waiting to get served :)

honestly try mid afternoon, its dead quiet, and service is sound, always go at that time when i am there :D

Our then 18 month old hated rainforest. When those apes started screeching, so did she. She was scared stiff when the lightning started too

That's what I've seen each time I've been to Rainforest. Terrified kiddos. The little ones really can't differentiate between reality and the pretend storms and animals. It is wicked loud and the lights flicker, animals screech and move...

Service each time I've been has been consistently poor and I seriously don't like the food.

I only go now when I have company that insists.
But, given Redkop's experiences, I may try it once more with his family!

I've yet to make it to Sci-Fi. I keep meaning to try it, just never seem to get there. I have a recipe from there for their BBQ ribs though. Delicious!

I liked scifi.. it was a totally different experience :) as a scifi fan I loved the movie loop, loved the cars we sat in and the dark, drive in movie atmosphere. The food tasted nice too :) Still got a few of those glo-cubes that came in those weird cocktails I kept trying

I love Rainforest Cafe. We've had good food and great service every time we've been. I DO think that is because we use vouchers. I like the atmosphere there but I can see how it would be frightening for little kids.

Sci-Fi has good milkshakes and good burgers. I tried a pasta dish that had garlic in the name but was completly devoid of garlic.

Any places that would be *good* to go to with a toddler? 50's Prime time Cafe? Anywhere? We don't want to get crummy food and service, though.

We took ours to 50s Prime Time and he was fine there. I think his favourite was Garden Grill in Epcot though. Characters were great with him and there was plenty to eat too - including vegetables.

Have to second lunch at the Land in Epcot. Characters walk about while you eat family style. No waiting. They will bring out extra food if you like. All inclusive meal including soft drink and desert:p . My nephews love it(2 year old handful and a mellow 5 year old). My DD also loved it since she was 9.

We dined at the Rainforest Cafe in Animal Kingdom and loved it :) , the food was great, service good maybe a little pricey but hey your in WDW but an overall good meal, we did try to get in at the one at DTD on our last visit but the que was a mile long and very noisy so we took off and went to Keys Cool on the 192 and got mega ripped off big style.

I gotta stand up for both Rainforest Cafe' & Sci Fi Diner. We always eat at least once at the RC at DTD & if we can we take in the one at AK too. It's an event for my kids & they love it & always have. They've been going to it since they were 5 & newborn. The storms used to make them nervous & sometimes we'd have to put an arm around them & say "it's not real" but they never got upset. At 6 & 11 now, they'd have a fit if we didn't eat there.
Sci Fi is fantastic. The worst thing to me is the service sometimes. It seems we've either had a super fun waiter or one that appears to wish he were anywhere but there. WE've never had an in between. The food is fine to me. It ain't fine dining, it's burgers & fries but it's good burgers & fries (& yummy milkshakes!). Again, it's my kids who love it. To them it's a tradition to eat there every visit. They love sitting in the car & watching the movie & when the waiters act out during certain scenes. They love getting the drivers license & the glow in the dark ice cube & our annual picture in the car taken by our waiter. It's fun.

Catherine, isn't Key W Cool's awful!? They used to be really nice, but boy oh boy, have they gone down hill. Ripped off is the perfect way to explain it.

I'm never going in there again. :nono:

I love Rainforest Cafe, although we went to the AK one on this trip and were seated practically at the entrance, so we got very little of the ambiance of the place, just a lot of people walking past us to get to their table......

We went to down town Rainforrest the first full day there. We had to book the table for about an hour & half ahead because they were so busy.
The place is everything everyone has said- loud, jungle noises etc but the thing that is most memorable is the look on Summer Breezes face when her salad was put in front of her. The portion was HUGH. It was a good night but maybe this was because everything was so new to us.:)

WE ate at the AK one which was a first visit to a RC for us and the food and atmosphere was just brilliant. Looking forward to going again in April.
