OKay, I have a laptop that is 2 years old with a baby 20 GB hard drive. My iTunes is eating up a massive amount of space. Is there a way to delete what's in iTunes without losing it when I sync my iPod again? Please tell me there is a way to do this. I would be freeing up about 7 GB of space on my hard drive :)

Burn a data cd.
If you want reload tunes. Direct the IPod to the cd drive.
Or copy the songs you want to the IPod directory.

What about an external hard drive where you can save all your songs and just plug when you need to transfer to your IPod...

Yes, a data cd (cd-r), not cd-rw (you might rewite over it or loose sertain files during copying them back), would work great. Also creating an audio folder containing a backup of your songs onto your ipod would help if you have enough memory. That and an application called iPodAgent (PC) or Pod2Go (MAC) will help you in the future if you plan on importing weather information, lyrics, and more. I have been teaching myself the ways of the pod2go and will soon leanr about iPodAgent if my dad will open his computer. Hope it helps.

excuse my ignorance but--if she had like 700 songs in her itunes, wouldn't it take several cd's? Or does a data cd store them differently and allow more songs?

No.
My ignorance ILTink.
I'm not familiar with IPod.
I just called a back up as the best bet.

I'll leave this one to the pros.

MP3 are about 4 MB each and 4 times 700 would be 2800, so that would mean 2800 MB and then divide that by 700 (MB per CD-r) and you would end up with 4. So ya, that would be like about 4 CD-r's verses the one we said earlier, it doesn't really mader that much. but CD-rw's are about 650 MBs so... ya

Edit: Uneducated.... :rotfl:, Ya im smatr then mi dAd, i gwaduated!

Okay, so if I'm understand what I'm reading (and of course that is assuming quite a lot) I can switch to manual sync, then back up my stuff to CDs and delete it from my computer correct? And in doing this I will not lose all the stuff on my iPod already?

Ilovetink
January 9th, 2005, 04:29
I know you can use the "hard drive" option on your ipod and copy your audio files over to that. When you sync again it doesn't erase the hard drive, just the mp3's. What do they mean by manual sync? I've never investigated this. Maybe it would be easier to add memory to your computer?

JuniorMickey
January 9th, 2005, 04:39
I have a laptop. I'd have to replace the hard drive which is a royal pain in the behind

JacksDad
January 9th, 2005, 04:43
Not memory ILTink but a larger hard drive.
I'm sure all she needs is a way to back up the ITUnes.
If they're mp3's then all you need is a data backup.

JuniorMickey
January 9th, 2005, 04:44
They are all MP3s. I just want to me sure I'm not going to lose everything I have on my iPod when I sync again

TOM
January 9th, 2005, 04:51
Yes, switching to manuel sync will make it so you have to drag and drop the files to the ipod through itunes. And if your feeling extra special you can use an application that is called tinker tool (MAC) that will alow you to access the invisible folders and files. You can then (the ultimate in manuel) place the files individually onto the ipod. They invisible folders should be Itunes controls>music>then any of the fxx folders. It will be somewhere in there, i cant remember the exact rout.

And ps. Did we stary from your question like the entire time?

JuniorMickey

A little but we got there in the end. I'm on a PC so a mac tool does me no good :) Good to know I can free up some HD space though :) Thanks guys!

I know people have had issues with ipods and itunes so i feel like i sould tell you guys about JHymn. It will allow you to "DRM strip" your itunes purchased music. this will mean that you can burn this as many times as you would like (JM... ahem...) and open up its use out to other music players. Now you can also convert the songs to .mp3. Just google "JHymn Download" and you will find the link to a hymn-project.org site. The newest format is 6.2 that I know of. Hope it helps.

Whitequeen,
Does James have his iPod set on the manual mode when he loads his songs?

I am not an expert on iPod, but I will tell you I spent a very loooooong Christmas Eve trying to get DH's to work. (Along with assorted other difficulties, I had it set on the manual mode and it took me a looong time to figure out how to get the songs from the computer to the iPod. :D )

It turns out having the iPod on manual mode is a good thing. Now, what I do is make a new folder (or add to an existing folder) and then click and drag the whole folder over to the iPod to load it.

Then if you want to get rid of the songs, you could back up the new folder (using an external hard drive/disk or whatever depending on the size of the folder) and then use the clear songs option to get them off your laptop. (Which is highlight the song, right click and click clear. I believe it queries you if you want to remove it from the folder and the library....say yes and poof! it's gone. :) )

To reincarnate the songs, just load the media, highlight the songs in question and drag it over to the iTunes directory.

When I first connected the ipod it was set to manual and I couldn't work out why it wasn't automatically downloading. Then I read the instructions.

My nephew came up with a solution, but you have to have 2 computers.
If I load itunes onto the PC and only use that for downloading and de-sync (whatever the word is) the ibook from that account. Then only use the PC for downloading/charging etc. Did that make sense?
Doesn't help JM though....sorry. :sorry:

If he uses the PC for the downloads/charge, then does he have to use your ibook at all?

I think I have it figured out. I'll sync it tonight and switch it to manual. I can the back up my collection onto CDs (should take 4 or 5 according to TOM) and then I can free up the space :D

And not trying to sound rude, but i dont think you can use an iPod on 2 different OS's, like using it on a MAC and a PC.

Ilovetink
January 9th, 2005, 17:57
You can't use them on both but you can switch from one to the other. I used to only use my mini on my apple, now I use it on my laptop(pc). I didn't have any problems switching over. Of course I don't remember exactly how I did it either...
