View Full Version : Where do dead computers go?

We've got a monitor that is no good to anyone anymore so it's just taking up space. As Tink says that clutter is bad it has to go. But where does it go? I can't just put it out with the regular rubbish for collection.
So where do you take your dead computers?

i would phone the council to see if there is a recycling depot near you, or look in the phone book, or a search on recycling in the town where you live :D
hope this helps you dawn :)

It was a painless death - it didn't suffer at all. And it was only the monitor - I think it was just old age.
Thanks chaps I'll have a look through the phone book. Never had a computer bereavement before so wasn't sure what to do with it.

Dead computers go to my basement where they look sadly at me, longing for the day when I open them up and fix them.

Umm...Dawn honey, you do realize that the cost of shipping a dead monitor to the states is equal to or more than the cost of a brand new monitor

Nah, she'd just deliver it in person.

As long as it's got a piggie in it.
We tried turning an older Apple into a fishbowl. It was kinda fun, but messy (we didn't do it right. poor fish!)

Take a walk down the street, and find a dumpster of someone elses and when no one's looking, just toss it in :D Just kidding, don't do that!
We just save every computer that we have, and save the monitors for "just in case one goes bad".
I guess you could call somewhere in town and find out?

I've never had a computer die on me...I try to replace it before that happens. I normally give the old computer to my oldest DD....I don't know what she does with them when they do die. Fish bowl :lmao: :lmao:

Electric eel!
Seriously, there are a lot of environmental issues with getting rid of electronic components, so we've got to be concerned with how we finally dump them.
I'll get off my soap box now before I fall. :D

MM you're right though. It's like getting rid of car batteries, you can't just dump them. (off the soap box too....)

Our local waste tip/ recycle center has a section for old electronic & electrical equipment.
I think someone looks at them to see if they can be repaired and sent to the third world.
Got to take and old computer there. It is so old that there is only the monitor with a slot for a disc, plus keyboard & mouse of course.

I couldn't immediately find the photo essay I wanted to find about the amount of computer waste sent to india for disposal.... but they had pics of basically not much more than babies trying to pick apart bits of motherboards and sell the bits for money for food. Apparently the levels of cancers, kidney disease etc. are off the charts there because of the chemicals used.

I, like many others I suppose, never thought that there were so many bad chemicals in a computer. I shall now think twice about how I dispose of it if the re-cycle center is exporting them.
That report is frightening.

I donated a 20in Monitor to our local school. It was relatively new, so they could still use it.
Another monitor (which was too old for them to use), I sent to HP. I paid a small fee and they sent me a coupon that could be used for a new HP product (unfortunately, I let it expire :()
HP either donates the monitor to a program that could use it or they properly recycle/dispose of the components if it is too old.
I generally give away my old computer when I get a new one. (I have been running on a 2-4 year replacement cycle on my computer, so sometimes the computer is not that old. :) )
Old software and components--I take to work --if it isn't a license that has to be transferred, I just put a sign on it "free to a good home" And, it always finds a good home. :)
