I would imagine walmart would sell them and there ought to be one of those close to you whereever you're staying. The locations are on their website

Do you have to take them out the box so customs wont question you on your way back?

Keith

Welllllll, you don't want to carry one back waving it around in the box, that's true ;-) If you got stopped, randomly perhaps, then yeah, an absence of a box may help a little but remember, we're talking the customs & excise people here so you're assumed guilty unless you can prove you bought it over in the uk ;-) so just not having a box doesn't protect you.

you're allowed £145 each for gifts or items for personal use... you can't pool the allowance for several people to buy one expensive item.

Soooooo if you buy something for more than £145 or have items totalling more than £145, technically yep you should declare them on the way back and pay vat/duty etc on them :(((((

Of course, £145 is a stupid, measley, ridiculous amount, so most people ignore it and hope they get away with it.

That's where the "taking out of the box" comes from. The idea being well they can't prove I bought it over there if it's not in the box... problem is, they dont need to, YOU need to prove you already had it when you went out.

Of course, the chances of them stopping you are probably reasonably remote ;-) but that's the deal! You takes your chances ;-)

All I would say is, if anyone ever gets stopped and has >£145 or whatever, admit it when asked and pay up. It's *definitely* not worth trying to say "ahhhh no box! prove I bought it over there mr. nasty customs man" ;-)

Thing is I am from the Channel Islands so I don't pay VAT.

So technically if they did pull my over I could tell them where to go right?

Silly question here....won't you want the i-pod thingie on the flight over?

Melfuzz

Cheaper to buy them in America. Will just have to find other entertainment over

I don't live there so I couldn't tell you :)

I guess with the exchange rate it would be. Do you know what model you want...I can check some prices over here in the Atlanta area.

ipod's are usually the same price all over, Apple make sure of that.
With the exchange rate as it is, you'll save about £40 buying in the states. When the rate goes down again it may be just as easy to buy them here.

What Keith is saying Josh, is that you are only allowed to bring back goods that equal a certian amount of money. An iPod is higher than that.

I mean when you go through customs whether its in your handluggage, in your cases or anywhere and irrespective of whether you've used it, put music on it etc :)

So, when you come back from florida having bought your ipod and other gifts/souveneirs/tshirts etc... in theory, you can only bring back £145 worth of such stuff each.

My darling boyfriend just bought a 60gb creative jukebox zen for under £200..... Thing with buying an i-pod in the states, is if you do get stopped and have no music on it, you have absolutly no way of prooveing you took it over with you..... thus meaning pay up time.....

yeah gotta say that looks awesome josh... and it kinda makes the holiday even MORE exciting doesnt it :))))

I dont know if that comes with a power supply or recharging in the USB2 cradle but I guess you already know you have to be careful with US power supplies etc.. make sure they work over here, buy an adapter blah blah

josh.p.
January 26th, 2005, 22:41
hi,

i knew i would need a adapter, but can only certain plugs go in an adaptor?!?!?! cos i willl need 2 get 1 in the states won't i!

Keith
January 26th, 2005, 23:26
You need to examine the thing youre going to buy and make sure first of all that any power supply that comes with it supports not just 110v but also 220v for the UK. Assuming it does, all you need is a simple cheap US -> UK adapter yep.

My darling boyfriend bought a 60gb Zen Nomad from this site, for under £200. http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/35132/art/creative/jukebox-zen-xtra-60-gb.html

And it has a transformer on the wires, so you don't have to worry about power supplies.

I used to have that MP3 player! My doggie chewed it up, I was so mad. Now I have a Rio Nitrus that my dad got at Target for $150. I don't know the correct terms for memory but so far I have 12 albums on it and there is stil way more then half the space unused! I don't remember how much I fit onto the Jukebox b4 it got ruined, but I did like it.
