Sorry.. had no clue where to put this, so feel free to move it...

As some of you know, my cousins (8 and 5) might be coming with us on our next trip in October.

In preparation I told Andrea that she should do her best to work on her English at school because Ariel, Cinderella and the gang only speak English... she was shocked! And I mean this shocked:  , and of course said that the princesses speak perfect Spanish on HER tv...

She did say she could manage:

How are you today? I am very fine thank you .. in English---

So anyway----afterwards I was thinking, does anyone know of any single character that just might speak Spanish, and where to meet them?... I know... the impossible question, but who knows!!

Thats a good question that you should try to find an answer too. There are so many visitors from other countries that I honestly would be shocked to think English is the only language most of them speak. But I don't know as i've never really thought about it. I would especially think Spanish would be spoke by many there.
Good luck & I hope you can find the answer.

Hmm, most of them probably have to speak english, but their true language might be spanish. :)

Weird. In DLRP characters (yes face too!!!) aren't allowed to speak. only using some kind of sign and bodylanguage. Because of the many different languages of the people visiting the parcs.

But they give their autographs in french though. It is really weird that Tigger signs with Tigrou and Snow White with Blanche Neige

I'm glad to hear that they do speak in the USA. Do the characters like Chip and Dale and Mickey or Donald speak too?

The characters that speak are the ones not wearing "face masks".... the princesses, Peter Pan, Aladdin... etc...

Thanks Bambi, I know its a hard question, but I just thought Id give it a try ... she does know how to say how do you do if it comes to the worst... .. she cracks me up!

I think they both will do fine communicating. I bet she's working extra hard now with her English. Hey~just thought of an idea. You can keep busy on the plane helping them brush up on English.

Will you have a long flight? Ooops is that a Jessica Simpson question:lol:

it depends

If its a direct flight it willonly take a little over two hours

But l ast time we had to go via Houston, so it was almost 6 hours...

Nop.. not a Jessica Simpson question at all

Well, English is the official language. When in Rome do as the Romans do.

This is an issue requiring much diplomacy, which is not my strong suit. Many English speakers just do not know enough Spanish to respond, and it is not a job requirement for characters to be bilingual. Perhaps they do know a few words but are reluctant to get into any conversation in a language in which they are not fluent. There is no easy answer.

On a lighter note, I remember speaking to Santa Claus, with an English accent, at the mall, which was an eerie experience to a youngster. One had always assumed that he was an American.

Hopefully with the kids you'll get a direct flight.

I know that... but she will only be 5 at the time.... so... hopefully she will be able to understand enough words to have a nice conversation with Ariel...

Yep, but remember the charactors aren't allowed to talk back, so matter what she says, the character will probably nod their heads. :)

really??

At least Cinderella, The Fairy Godmother and Prince Chamring in 1900 Park Fare, and also Snow White in MGM did talk back to the kids, they even asked a few questions... weird...

"Face" characters do speak. I had a very nice chat with Peter Pan and Wendy in November. They were shocked that my mother would allow me to travel alone :D

Actually, the United States does not have a declared official language. The language of the government is English and of Air Space (but the air space thing is universal) but there is no official language of the people.

So, to a little Spanish speaking Miss I would hope that she would find any number of CMs to interact with. Many, many do speak Spanish among other languages.

The characters, as already established only speak if they are those who appear "in face." I don't know, but I would bet that if they knew any Spanish they might use a few words. After all, as you point out, the children who speak Spanish and live in other countries are familiar with the character using that language too.

There are also those headset translator things, Marivigi. I don't know if they would be any help to a five year old, but it wouldn't hurt to look into it.

Children learn to speak languages other than their native language quite easily. The theoretical underpinnings to that reality hold that the LAD (language acquisition device) of the brain is more "fluid" in the young, making it easier for them to pick up another language. Adults have to work fairly hard at it, memorizing and using rote methods.

Oy. Diverging again!

Thanks Tink!

I have seen the headsets in our lasts visits... I dont think we will need them though... WDW is friendly enough, and Tono and I do speak English (well, we try)... but we do understand it well enough to act as translators

I wa sonly hoping maybe the odd princess of character here or there would be able to speak a little Spanish, so the both Carlos and Andrea get a little interaction (which they'll be talking about forever)

thanks for the replies!!
