I was just wondering if one were to hit what happens to the tourists? I have booked the holiday myself on the net and am not and cannot drive.
Do they evacuate and how would I evacuate if needs be.
I know its unlikely but I want to be prepared for the worst then I can just relax and enjoy my holiday.

Fair enough questions.
Evacuation is mostly at the shores, and in mobile/manufactured homes.
You would evacuate in a resort/hotel/motel if there were a direct threat, like the roof blowing off. Of course by that time, no one would be driving anywhere and your best bet would be to (NO I'M NOT SAYING THE "H" WORD) batten down your hatches the best you could and ride out the storm.
Safest place is in a room without windows, like the bathroom.
Evacuation is usually done by indivduals, on your own.
Try not to worry overmuch as there is ample warning that one is coming.

I am just wondering if I had to evacuate where would I go? And how would I get there.
This is just something I was thinking about during a sleepless night and havent forgotten.

I have to echo what Tink says :) Most people from my area who need to get out head up to the Orlando area (Just realized I'm in an evacuation area now). If for some reason your hotel had to evacuate, one would assume that there would be shuttles available to shelters (at least there are here in South Florida for those hotels that do need to evacuate)

We were at Pop Century for Hurricane Charley
Disney CMs kept us informed all the time... We were advised to stay in our rooms. They would leave voice messages and also left a letter with safety tips
We were on the ground floor, and from what I know there werent any evacuations in WDW.

Every Disney hotel, except for the the campgrounds, is built to exceed the Florida Hurricane Building Code. They were being built this way even before the 2001 code went into effect.
Disney's own building code, administered by Reedy Creek Improvement District, is the toughest and most comprehensive in Florida.

The rest of the state should take a page from Disney SM

If it's any consolation, I live in a very well constructed home 5 minutes from Disney - but by the time Jeanne (#3) came around, we were so fed up with dealing with it that we went over and checked into the Boardwalk.
Slept like a couple of babes.

Makes sense  , but it would make residential buildings impossible to afford.
Codes are not written to provide maximum protection, but the maximum protection that the least amount of money can afford.
That is why South Florida was leveled during Andrew, the building codes were bordering at adequate and the building contractors were not even building to meet those minimum codes.
Example, code used to say, and I am paraphrasing "a roof truss must be secured to the supporting wall with a system of side anchors and 9 nails". It was found after Andrew that entire communities were built with trusses that were secured with only 3 nails, even some without anchors.
Basically roofs in South Florida were rigid boxes sitting on top of the walls, without anchoring. When Andrew came, the wind just lifted the roofs the same way a wind acts on an airplane wing, negative presure on the bottom (inside the house) and positive presure on top (wind rushing by). Roofs literally flew away like an airplane.

If you should be unlucky enough to be in a hurricane all you can do is make sure you have food and water available and "HUNKER DOWN" :rotfl:
:naughty: Couldn't help myself.
