Hi All,

After getting back from that lovely place called Florida :D

I can know moan about WDW and other theme parks there, when they Charge for the use of the Electric Scooters, Its like they are making money out of my disability or illness and i wasn`t impressed.

We didn`t go to the theme parks this year because we just love being in Florida for other things, but we never been to Downtown Disney, Its not a theme park or as big as the others so we asked how much to hire one of hte Scooters and it was the same price as theme parks! grrr not happy.
I was going to write and complain but nothing will happen and it will be a waste of my energy to do so :(

oooo and we should have there attitude and Fine people who park in Disability parking bays hehe .. we can only dream :D

Hi Angelvella and welcome back :)

How much energy does it take to put a stamp on a letter? if a lot of disabled people did complain maybe they'd have to do something about it.

I do not know how much they charge for their wheelchairs, but would like to think it would be no more than a token amount to take care of the upkeep of them.
While I'd agree that disney is a big company, it is still a business like any other, but I do understand your point.
Fines for people who take up a disabled bay? I'd go along with that, but it has to be enforced.
Our local Asda ( wallmart ) has literally designated the front part of their store car parking to disabled parking, has it helped in my opinion? I dont think so, it just gives people who dont give a hoot about disabled people more spaces to park in!
Best wishes.

Bill.

Hi, well our local Sainsbury`s is really bad, i went in to complain about people parking in the Disabled bays who are not disabled and just plain lazy, the manager said "I understand your concern but when we approach these people they sometimes get aggressive and moan about it!" what an answer then i emailed Sainsbury`s themselves never got a reply..

I will write to them and complain, the price for ALL of Walt disney parks and others was $35 for the day,

This is exactly the reason we rent a Scooter from an off-site company for the whole of our trip. It would cost a fortune otherwise and we wouldn't be able to do some things where there isn't a scooter to use.

Sorry your experience wasn't good, Angelvella.

I'm sorry that you feel that way hun. BUT, Disney does have to cover the cost of the scooters, the maintenance on them, keeping them clean and charged, etc. etc. When you think about it the cost is not really all that bad, especially when you consider that if you rent a scooter in the MK for the morning and then go to Epcot for the afternoon and evening, you only have to pay once. So if you take your original $40 and divide it by say an 8 hour day, it really only is costing you $5 an hour to rent the scooter, which I don't think is too bad at all.

As Whitequeen mentioned, there also are a number of places off site that have motorized scooters can be rented on a weekly basis and they will even deliver it to your hotel for you

We all know that nothing is really cheap at Disney World, but I honestly feel that the price of renting a motorized scooter is actually a pretty good deal

I wouldn`t of minded if it was a theme park but it wasn`t, it was just downtown Disney and you couldn`t use them anywhere else if you wanted to go to another part of Disney because its not connected properly.

You cannot take the same scooter from one park to another ever. You take your receipt and get one at the next park. Of course, Disney has a limited amount of scooters so if you're going for a longer visit, I would take WQ's recommendation and rent from an offsite location. I used a scooter for two days last October (few weeks before having major knee surgery) and the cost didn't bother me  guess that's just me though.

I know it is a hard line to balance, but could you imagine the number of people that would be using the ECVs and WC if there were not a charge? WDW would probably have to go to a system that required some sort of Doctor's evidence of need and how annoying would that be?

As for people parking in HC sites without the proper ID, any police officer will write a ticket on that one, and they are not cheap tickets! :nono: If you see someone illegally parked simply tell security at WDW or management of the shop in other places (like Publix, etc.). I don't see a lot of illegal parking because the enforcement of that particular law is pretty well done around here. :)

DTD is not an amusement park, but it is a place that lends itself to needing mobility transport if that is something an individual requires. And again, if the ECV/WC or stroller is rented there, the receipt will carry forward for that same day to any of the other WDW parks, so nothing is lost.

Renting from an offsite place is clearly much more cost effective though. That's why many folks do it. :ears:

We used Randy's Mobility at Whitequeen's suggestion and it was great. There is also Walker Rental and Care Medical and a host of others. The ECV's are a lifesaver, and I don't mind renting one because of what Tink points out - it would be bedlam if they were free! My kids would be tooling all over the parks in them!!

I thought that DH would need to use one in May and we were going to rent one from Randy's Mobility . Since we have both stopped smoking his breathing has been alot better . So much so that he only uses his nebulizer, as needed . He is only going to rent one at the parks when we go to Epcot and the Magic Kingdom ( larger parks and more walking involved ). I agree with Breeze and JM, $40.00 a day isn't bad when you consider the expense in maintaining, charging and the amount of time that it will be used . Otherwise, Randy's is the best deal . Last I checked it was $150.00 for a week, drop off and pick up delivery at the resort .

$40 a day isn't bad if your going to a park for ONE day. However, that can seriously add up. It is much more cost effective to rent an ECV. You are also guaranteed to have the ECV. There might not be any availability if you rent at the parks.

I've been thinking of this all day. I do understand where the OP is coming from. When you go to Wal-Mart or Target, they have ECV's to use free of charge. Downtown Disney is mostly a large marketplace, I can see why one would think they should be free there as well. But, Disney does nothing for free.

And Disney really should make exceptions at DTD with a disabled license or doctor's paper . After all , they know you will be spending a pretty penny at the Marketplace . :D

So let me see if I understand this correctly. You can rent a scooter the minute you arrive at a WDW Resort, and if you use their transportation are you able to get the ECV onto the method of transportation? If not what then?

I don't think so, Luv. If you rent one at MK, for example, and then park hop to Epcot, you would leave the MK EVC there, and you would use your MK receipt to get one at Epcot (if they have any left) and you wouldn't have to pay again...

Can you rent them at your resort???

Mickeymac
March 6th, 2005, 15:53
Donna, some of the deluxe resorts have a 'corral' of ECV's from an offsite vendor that you can rent - they are not guaranteed to be there, of course, so you're best off making arrangements before you go.

Luv, Guests typically rent them right at the parks. Each park has a separate fleet of wheelchairs and ECV's available for rent. Each wheelchair and ECV (as well as buggy) goes through a daily 'sanitation' process and equipment check overnight, similar to what each ride vehicle goes through.

Thanks Donna and Marion. Thought I would ask in case anyone was wondering about it.

Completely agreed about the disabled parking bay. Only problem is now that even disabled badge holders stare at me when I park in them. I have a valid disabled badge - but arrive with 4 kids!!!. It was No4 that broke my pelvis and never been able to walk far since.

Can someone advise - do the manual wheelchairs come with self propelly handles on side of wheels like in the UK.
Are they pretty easy to push?? :rotfl:

Mickeymac

The manuals do not come with motors; they are standard issue wheelchairs. They seem to be fairly easy to push with the exception of Animal Kingdom. Not a trip goes by there where I don't see a tired grown-up trying to push a chair up one of those hills.

The last time I really looked at them, they did not have the extra handles on the sides, you are talking about the extra metal bar, Right?? They are like the regular hospital chairs, just the one wheel, mostly everyone that is using one is being pushed and it is not easy, there are so many hills and inclines. I remember pushing my now ex-husband on our honeymoon and ended up with heat stoke that night.....it was horrible. I would definitely go with the EVC. But then they could of changed their chairs.

LOL, thank you Miss Disney - my mind was all Steven Hawkins on interpretting that question! :D

No problem, Mickeymac - I do not consider those wheelchairs people friendly. If you are left alone for a while and would like to move the chair yourself, and you do not have any use of your legs, I can see anyone trying easily being stuck in a rut or groove in the pavement, and AK is the worst for that. I have always seen everyone being pushed, no one doing it by themselves, unless they had their own special chair.

Hi all I'm new here. We are going to WDW and cruise the end of my I want to rent a scooter even though I can walk cause I can't walk far. We are flying down and won't have a car. We are staying at the dolphin resort maybe get the polynsia Spelling ?) one we are on a waiting list. But Dolphin for sure. Where would be a good place to rent a scooter for 4 days outside of the parks. We got the park hopper passes so will be going between all of them it would be better for me to rent from an outside the partk dealer..

If you have a look here (http://www.wdisneyw.co.uk/disababout.html) our disabilities pages will give you a list of companies that you can rent an ECV from for the duration of your stay.

Oh, and welcome to our Disney home. Enjoy. :D

Thanks for the help I put a scooter on reserve for the end of May for 4 days $145.00 which isn't bad I don't think. He said they would deliver to the hotel. We are staying at the Poynesian Resort. They finally confirmed that. Now we are waiting for our flight schedualing lol...
