View Full Version : Extension cords...

Ok. I have been doing a bit of reading up on in preparation for our upcoming cruise. I've read that our stateroom will only have 4 plug-ins - none near the bed - and to bring an extension cord. DH uses a CPAP at night to help him with his apnea. Just how long of a extension cord are we going to need to reach from behind the vanity or TV so that he can put the CPAP next to his side of the bed? Anyone know?
Also, I'm sure we will both have our cell phones with us. Will they work on the ship? Will we ever use them? Realistically, I mean?

Since I haven't yet cruised I can't answer your question. I need to crack down and find time to sit and read my passporter cruise guide. (Where's the time?)
I am curious about the cell phones also. I don't plan to sit around talking on the phone while on the cruise but its nice to know in case we want to make a quick call to mom :)

We'll have ours in case the kids or my mom try to reach us in the event of an emergency - but will they work, I wonder...

I have this gut feeling they won't. Or at least mine won't because just getting a connection on the fairfax county parkway is a pain for me :(

Can` help on your extension cord query, but here (http://disneycruise.disney.go.com/disneycruiseline/faq/faqgroupingindex?id=BeforeYouLeaveFAQGrping#Before YouLeaveContactFamilyFAQ) is a link to the DCL site with a phone number for anyone to contact you in case of emergencies.

Thanks, Slowhand! I'll be sure to give that number to the family - just in case.
Now, did you carry your cell phone with you, and did you use it - or even need it?

No, I did not take my cell phone with me and to be honest, I cannot recall seeing anyone using theirs either, but that`s not to say that it cannot be done.
There are good ship to shore communications on board though [I sent a room request fax to the GF from guest services] so I would be surprised if you could not use your cell phone.
Also there will be no excuse for not keeping in touch with us all here when you are cruising as there is an internet cafe on board!

Thanks, I appreciate the info. I'll have my phone with me - I'll need it in FL - but it sounds like it won't be leaving the stateroom!

Extension cord? I'd bring at least a twelve foot one. Most cabins are not that large, but you never know where the nearest outlet will be. Bring a longer one if you want just to be safe.
I've not ever been able to use my mobile on a cruise. I just assumed it was because I was too far away AND that I had AT&T Wireless which is a terrible service.
Ship to Shore is available, but for any of the ships I've been on (none Disney, just to clarify) the charges were breathtaking. I'd not use it for chats, only for dire emergencies!
Are you going to notify the ship beforehand that USCWest has a special required breathing machine? That might get you some really helpful information.

To be honest with you, I hadn't thought about letting them know. We've gotten so used to it that neither of us give it much thought. That might be a good idea. And I'll check around the house to see how long of an extension cord we have. They are relatively inexpensive, so I can always get another one.
Other than DD calling to wish us Happy Anniversary, there should be no reason for anyone to call - and no reason for us to call anyone. But you never know.

For something like a cpap, you'll want a grounded heavy duty cord, too. Can't take chances with current fluctuations through a regular garden variety cord.
Last I remember it was about $8 a minute to talk ship to shore.

Ouch... That is pricey.
I guess we could leave the CPAP home, but then I won't get any sleep.

Never even thought of extension cords....
As for the cell phone, Ricks getting a new one soon (thanks to his company) and it will have GAIT capabilities..this is so new to me. We'll be able to use his phone anywhere (well, maybe not on the ship).

What is GAIT?

It's the capability to use a cell phone in different countries, like a satillite phone I think...I am trying to find out more about it, but there's not much info, or I'm looking in the wrong places.
