I heard some airlines allow student discounts if you show valid college ID (and some for younger students but that its mostly for college kids). Is this true? Does anyone know the U.S. airlines that do this, and how much of a discount they offer?

Have never known or taken advantage of any student discount through an airline. Chances are that the person was talking about STA Travel (http://www.statravel.com/).
STA (Student Travel Agency) (http://www.statravel.com/) (click on the name to visit the website) is a travel agency for students  , they have offices in almost every state university in the US, usually at the rec centers or student union buildings.
You become a member for $20, get your International Student Identification Card and can take advantage of their setvices as long as you are enrolled in school. This card is accepted worldwide. For example, for our honeymoon Mrs. SM and I went to Rome and since we had our ISIDC, we got discounted admission to almost every site, Colosseo, catacombs, museums, Pompeii, etc.
