Hi

can anyone tell me what happens if your child has ChickenPox whilst you are at Disney

Daugther just come out in spots - she will be clear in time but her younger brother is due to get (14 to 21day incu period) whilst we are at Disney

Do they stop you going in????

Probably no. It's contagious so you shouldn't be taking him to a public place anyway.

i don't know if you are flying but i don't think your allowed on an aircraft with contagious illnesses

Dawn

I was just going to add that. If he contracts before you travel the airline won't let you fly until a doctor gives the all clear.

We were in this position once and the doc told us to postpone, which we did. Sure enough the 2nd child broke out right on cue. Secondary infections can be much worse than the original carrier too. Your son could be quite poorly if he does catch it. Your insurance will cover any cancellation due to illness.

something to think about is children visiting WDW with compromised immune systems- Chicken Pox could do them serious harm. I don't actually think WDW will let you in with spots

Plus if he gets cold or chilly while having the chicken pox, he could end up doing worse to his body with the virus.

OKWTink
May 4th, 2005, 14:02
There are any number of persons with immune diseases and other catastrophic illnesses that should not be exposed to a contagious disease. Being enclosed on the airplane is an environment ripe for spreading such an illness.

I would strongly consider rescheduling.

To be honest with you... I don't really think it would be fair to other people. Your kids could pass it on to other people which would totally spoil their holiday. I got chicken pox when I was 21 and I was so ill I literally couldn't get out of bed for two weeks. People don't want to be exposed to stuff like that while they are going on holiday.

Josette

I will admit, when sick kids are brought to Disney, I am kind of ticked.

Why? because the kid's sick, and i don't want the germs. Not only that, but imagine how much that kid is not enjoying his vacation. He's sick and probably only wants to lie down and sleep. It's almost like torture. :(

I totally agree..........I was 28 and in the early stages of pregnacy when I got Chicken pox......I too was very ill and lost the baby.........you really must think of others and postpone your trip, or the very least go and speak to a doctor and get advice.....

I would have to agree with the majority. I wouldn't take him, you never know if he is going to run a high fever and for how long. My oldest (11yr) ran a fever for a week, even though she felt fine. I wouldn't risk it. Thank goodness my youngest got the chicken pox shot!

Oh my do reschedule even if it will cost you more money! Think of your child going around disney in the Florida heat! When you have the pox you can get a secondary infection and then you would be far from your regular doctor stuck in a hotel room with a sick child. Fevers are common with the CP and you just feel awful. Plus the other visitors in the park -- think about them -- many older folks (now dont go throwing your AARP card at me for that statement :rotfl: ) can get very very ill if they get them and some people have different condtions that thier immune system is not working correctly and this can be very serious for them and many children (like my daughter who has asthma, pulmonary stenosis and celiac disease which can cause her immune system to be at a lower level at times) if she gets sick it is a likely hospital admission, IV antibodics all at the "happiest place on earth" dont sound happy to me! stay home recover and then go it will be so much better for your family!! You know I never even thought about this subject boy I think I will pack a huge bottel of germ-X hand wash and masks for us all to wear  oh gads a new worry

Hey Sharon, I know how you feel, my youngest has glaucoma and her immune system reacts differently then ours, and it's all because of her eye drops. So I wouldn't want her around a sick child, and I always carry germ-x, antibacterial hand wipes, and even toilet seat covers (charmin). My husband says I'm wierd, better safe then sorry.

P.S. Happy Mother's Day to ALL

Hi, isn't it a shame that kids always seem to come down with something before a vacation. I would definately postpone I wouldn't even think twice if you think your child is coming down with chicken pox.

If a pregnant woman gets exposed to Chicken pox several types of fetal abnormalities, including limb abnormalities, scarring of internal organs and neurological damage can occur.
Its important to consider the health of others before taking your child into a public place with chicken pox.

Not only considering others but your child shouldn't be exposed to direct sunlight with chicken pox. I believe it can be very dangerous and even leave scars. However, this isn't just a case of being sick its a case of being contagious. I would also rather go when everyone is healthy and have fun. Your child would perhaps be too weak to walk the parks and would be miserable.
Also, people might give you some looks if they see your child covered in chicken pox. I wouldn't be able to have fun feeling everyone is avoiding me and my child in lines etc.

Sorry all this came up when you are getting so close to your vacation. Hope your dd is feeling better soon.

As an adult who some how missed most of the childhood diseases, I definitely appreciate parents who don't insist on exposing me to them. Selfish, I know, but adults ususally have much more severe reactions to the childhood diseases than children.

Thanks for all your comments

A few points though - The insurance company WILL NOT allow you to cancel the holiday because you "think" someone might have chicken pox. You are also most contagious up to ONE WEEK BEFORE ANY SPOTS APPEAR - so you can give it to someone else without even knowing. I agree it is not far to spread diseases - thats how we got it for the second time.!!!!!!!!!

However - Chickenpox scabs hang around for several weeks after you have the all clear - (which is 5 days after first spots appear). I am concerned that they will not let a scabby!! but clear child in!!

Anyone help here???

they're supposed to be all crusted over, i suppose if it did happen then you could go to a doctors and get a note. When i visited the doctors in the US a one off visit was just under $100. I would think that would placate disney- but you would have to ask them.

When we went the first timne in April 2003, my DS had just had chickenpox. He started with them about a week before we were due to fly, and typically it was a bank holiday weekend before we flew as well. I made a late appointment on the Fri before we flew on the Tuesday with our doctors and explained the situation. By this time he had had spots for about 5 days. The GP was fantastic and assured us that unless he suddenly started developing new spots or a chesty cough (rare complications) he would be fine to travel on the Tuesday.

She wrote a letter there and then saying she believed he was safe to travel and we had no problems at all. He was very scabby throughout the holiday, and we were careful about his skin in the sun, but if anything it helped that he was swimming lots. No-one questioned us at all, either at check-in for the flight, immigration or the parks entrances, although I had my hand on the doctor's letter at all times lol!

Hope that helps
Jen

We actually took a big bottle of Germ-X with us this last time we were down. Allow me to tell you the wonderous greatness of it. Typically, at least one of us get ill in Fla when we're there. We took Germ-x and after every ride, bathroom visit, hand rail touch, and randomly throughout the day, we would use it. I had a bottle of it in my bag for it, and before we'd eat we'd use it. This past time, not one of us got sick. :D

Knock on wood, hopefully the same will go for next year too.

Wal*Mart sponsors this trip to the "happiest place on earth" for kids who are dying with serious illnesses. When you bring a sick kid to the parks, they could come down with the illness, definitely making it life threatening, and ruining their vacation.

Once again - thanks for all your input

Can we please remember that I AM NOT talking about taking a child who is infecteous around Disney. I am only too well aware of the risk on human life.

And if you try to cancel a holiday every time you think someone MIGHT have X you would never take kids away at all. There is nothing to say he will even develop it.

We go on 18th May.

Also NHS Direct website CLEARLY states that 5 days from spots is fine - and advises children to return to school after this time. You are far more infectious before the spots even appear!!!

Perhaps we need to finish this discussion topic before I get anymore upset

I don't know whether you saw holiday airline on Sunday evening but a woman and her daughter were stuck in lanzarote as the airline refuse to fly her daughter home as she had chickenpox they were stuck there for over a week. The womans husband and other child had to fly home as there insurance on granted one adult to stay behind with the child. Airlines will NOT fly people with contagious illnesses of which chickenpox is one.

See if holiday airline is repeated on ITV2 at some point and watch it. Hope your kids are feeling better soon its awful when kids arent well and hope you enjoy your holiday :)

Did not see it - but thanks for info

I know insurance companies are real pains. My company know that I am disabled yet said they would do the same if it happened. As I am unable to physically lift my son (16mths) I could not stay behind with him - but I cant drive the car with the other kids either. They dont care that he is "my carer".

Hopefully it wont happen. It he comes out in spot we wont try to fly out. Insurance will then cover.

Only hope he does not come out in mid air!!! as we stop over at Boston (cheaper tickets) and it would be a nightmare to be stuck there on my own for a week.

We had the same problem when it happened to us. We made the decision to postpone straight away, but we had to wait for the doc to write a letter until just before we were due to leave. He strongly advised us to cancel (we weren't flying either, we were going to DLRP in the car) and he wrote a note for the first child who had chickenpox 10 days or so earlier, not the second child (who did indeed break out so it was a good job we cancelled!).

UK insurance companies will not let you cancel on a maybe. The only thing you can do is cancel on the basis that the first child is still poorly. The insurance also won't pay out for any loss of enjoyment if your child is ill whilst there. If you're confined to your room with a sick child until the spots scab over, it's just tough luck.

It's a ridiculous way to handle things on the part of the insurance companies because your child could be highly infectous on a plane but you won't know it until the spots appear afterwards. Your doctor should be giving you a medical note for the first child like ours did if you do really want to postpone.

Good luck in whatever choice you make, it's a tough one! :)

1st child is now completely clear of any spots so cant prove that she is not well enough to travel. Nice idea though.
It is the not knowing that I cant take - I hate this waiting game.

i read the thread there is no way they went cp free with a younger child exposed the chances of that younger child getting it is 99%. it is also 7 days or until all cp are crusted over that you are not considered contagious under the american pediatrics society since these children are going to be in the usa. i sure hope that they did not expose their children to pregnant women or immune suppressed people.

I would have to disagree, I run a daycare and have several children not catch the chicken pox (never having had the vaccine) while having been in direct contact with children who did have them. Still to this day my nephew has not had them and he was staying with us when my daughter came down with them 3 years ago.

Bambi
June 20th, 2005, 19:11
I agree LadyKay...I remember being 5 yrs old and my older sister had the chicken pox and none of us sibblings(4 others) cought it. My mom was so worried we were all going to catch it ecspecially since we were vacationing in London and we never did. My CP came in my sophmore year of HS. My mom did keep her at my aunts apartment in London away from all of us so maybe thats why we didn't really catch it because we weren't around her:shrug:

Also I have heard from rodgers6madhouse she sent me a pm weeks ago. I am under the impression she was feeling bombarded by some of the replies on this thread. I feel bad for her and she is really very nice and kept me updated. She specifically asked the doctor if she could travel since the other child did catch the CP. She asked the doctor about traveling and he aproved her to go, the dr even wrote a letter of some sort. I guess that means the child had the pox for at least a week before traveling. ANyway, its never fair to just asume someone did something selfish with out nowing the facts. I think rodgers6madhouse used good judgment and got a professional opinion before traveling.
Hopefully we will be getting a trip report soon :)

rogers6madhouse
June 20th, 2005, 22:47
Thanks Bambi

I can assure everyone that I did not take any risks. My son had it for over a week before we flew and the doctor gave us the all clear - even wrote a letter to that effect.
Also new research - both in England and America has not found anyone catching it if exposed after 5 days from spots. If you also remember they are far more infectious before they even get the spots he was well and truly clear. The "scars" are still on his body now - 5 weeks later.

As to the holiday - unfortunately not a magical time. A big car crash "other party has been charged with careless driving" on our way to Disney ruined the holiday.

So I wish the doctor had not given us the all clear!

Unfortunately I was taken to hospital by ambulance as had severe neck and back injuries. Even back home - 3 weeks later I am still in agony, unable to work and on maximum pain relief. This is the 1st time I have even been to my computer!!!!

Kids bruised by seat belts and very scared - wont sleep on their own and have nightmares that there are stuck in a car thats on fire!!!

Husband also injuried his hand so much that it is still black and blue and now has back pain.

Not a pleasant experience at all - made far worse by being in a foreign country not knowing what to do - no mobile phone etc.

We have only just learnt that we can claim our costs back off the other driver and some from Hertz - something to do with the "no fault" state of Florida.
The other "driver"! was charged with careless driving - and has admitted full liability. Although it would have been hard for her to do anything else as she lost control of her vehicle - aqua planed around the bend and smashed into the front of our vehicle at high speed.

Our car a minivan was badly damaged and smoking "hence the bad dreams". Airbags went off - burnt leg to prove it!! Estimated damage $8000 to car alone.

It has wrecked my back - my condition now worse than ever - will prob need surgery to put it right but cant even see anyone privately till 1st Aug.

So a warning to everyone - take great care if it is raining. The roads get very slippy as oil lies on them until it rains.

The accident happened on Sherbeth Road - minutes away from AK and just off the 192

The only good thing was the Disney staff. 2 vans turned up before even the police did and they kept the 4 kids assumed for 2 hours, talked to the girls about their favorite characters, where to find them etc - whilst hubby sorted out paperwork etc - another note - the 1st police officer on seen is only there to assess the crash site, 2nd lot to speak to witness and then driver at fault - so you will have a long wait before they even speak to you.
I was at hospital having been taken immediately away by ambulance due to my injuries!!!

When "no fault" is used it doesn't mean liability. Florida insurance stipulates that all drivers having registered vehicles in Florida have to carry what is called PIP insurance. PIP is Personal Injury Protection and covers the first $10,000.00 (less any deductiable) of your medical bills at 80%. There's also a clause in PIP for lost wages, which are covered at 60%. That is the "no fault" cause of Florida insurance law.

In terms of compensation for your injuries, you'll be dealing with the at fault parties' insurance company. If it was a rental car, who is primary coverage and who is seconday can get tricky. If a person rents a car and declines the rental company's liability insurance, the insurance company has to carry a minimum of a 10/20 policy on the vehicle (10K per person, 20K per accident). That is primary. Seconday insurance would be the driver's personal insurance (this is asuming that the driver was american). If you have any questions on car insurance coverage, please let me know. It's what I deal with for a living, so I know Florida's insurance laws very well.
