Well here it is again. I'm sure that JM and OKWTink wish we did not have to do this again this year, but it seems that Mother Nature has other plans for us  .
Same as last year, we'll post updates, photos and video from around Disney, Orlando and South Florida as we get ready for what looks like another hurricane season.

Update from the island of Vieques, southeast of Puerto Rico:
Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 07:35:53 -0400
At about 6 last night we received the first installment of the fringes of Dennis. Our highest gust was at 19 mph and overall we have received only .40" of rain through this morning.
We have many clouds covering us and expect light rain throughout the day.
Check out this picture we took looking north towards Culebra.

Update from Kingston, Jamaica:
From: "Corinne Smith"
Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 10:41:07 -0500
Title: Again?
What the heck is going on? It's a bit early in the season to be staring down the barrel of another hurricane, and yet here we are, waiting on Dennis. We had the most spectacular lightning and thunder storm I've ever seen/heard last night. The rain started early this morning too, and it's still coming down VERY HEAVILY in Kingston. The streets and stores are packed with people rushing around to get their supplies; I suppose after Ivan just eight months ago, we all felt we'd have a few years' rest between hurricanes, but alas, here we go again!
One saving grace is the fact that it is already quite close and it is not yet a hurricane; this means that when/if it does hit us, it should not be worse than a Cat 1 or 2. One huge concern, however, is the tremendous amount of rain we're likely to experience as Dennis passes. There will probably be a lot of damage from flooding and landslides, particularly in the interior. This is bad news for the folks living there, as roads become impassable and may be cut off for a while.
As usual, we are hoping for the best, bracing for the worst.

Title: Message
Well we will all have to wait and see how this one turns out....and only just after the island had begun to show signs of recovery from Ivan last year it is so sad to think we might be hit with another one so soon......I realize that it might not be a cat 4 like Ivan but with all the rain we have been having already, surely the road out by Roselle in St. Thomas will be severely damaged.....with just the rain alone parts of the roads have already erroded away....
I awoke this morning to torrential rainfalls and lightening at around 5:00am this morning but then shortly after nothing but blue skies and a piercing heat till now 1:20pm.....everybody is saying that is a sure sign that it is coming...well I do see clouds forming now......the generator is topped up .....and the water tanks are all filled......I will keep you updated as often as I can....keep safe everyone....

Dennis Raining on Domingo's Parade
Rainbands from Dennis will be affecting much of the DR tonight
Santo Domingo, Wednesday - The outer rainbands of Dennis began spreading inland across the southern coast of Hispaniola Wednesday afternoon. Hurricane warnings are in effect for the southern coast of Haiti, and a Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from the border eastward to Barahona in the Dominican Repuiblic. At mid-afternoon the center of Dennis, packing 70mph winds, was located just a little over 200 miles south of Santo Domingo. A hurricane hunter aircraft from the US is investigating the storm now and it is expected that Dennis will be reclassified as a hurricane by later today. This is the earliest since the naming of hurricanes became general practice in the 1950's that four named storms have occurred in the Atlantic basin. In the busy 2004 season last year the first four named storms had not occured until Danielle formed on August 14, five weeks later in the season than Dennis' emergence on July 6 of this year. Dennis is moving to the west-northwest and is expected to become a major hurricane affecting Jamaica, The Caymens, Cuba, and the US Gulf Coast from Thursday through Saturday. Some models indicate wind speeds could approach 125mph or more when the system is at its strongest.

Yes, here on the South Coast we can hear hammering too. I was at the supermarket late this afternoon and it was packed, so people here are paying attention. We learned a lesson in Ivan. But...there is nothing happening yet. I just went out a did a little reconnaissance and it is calm and still but there is lightening all around - lots of it. The satellite picture looks nasty and the last update says it could be a Cat. 2 by the time it reaches. More tomorrow - JPS willing.

Jamaica Hurricane Update
From: Paul Klouse
Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 20:15:29 -0500
Greetings from Jamaica,
We are located 1 hour west of Port Antonio Jamaica and are expecting Hurricane Dennis to arrive within the next 24 hours. Heavy rain has been falling periodically and wind has been minimal.
The people here are expecting that this early Hurricane will shift away from Jamaica, so at this time preparations seem to be minimal. The sound of hammering can be heard on and off as people secure their zinc roofs with nails and cinderblocks. Schools have been closed for Thursday July 7, as many of these structures serve as emergency shelters during Hurricanes and other weather emergencies.
Awaiting Dennis,
Paul

There was another Hurricane Dennis back in 1999 that hit the North Carolina coast. I think that was the only other Hurricane Dennis, as it used to be hurricanes only had girls' names.
I'm glad they have early evacuation for visitors in the lower Keys, and then a later time for mobile home residents - helps the traffic flow and lets people get home from work good. There's just the one road - the Overseas Highway - US 1.

Update from the Cayman Islands:
From: Donna
Date: Thu, 07 Jul 2005 12:25:39 -0400
It is just after noon - most businesses are closing at 1pm and of course
schools were closed today. CAL is putting on extra flights to Miami today
and have not said what they will be doing tomorrow.
CUC states will not turn off power unless highwinds down lines and they will
be forced to shut down.
Even though we on Grand Cayman seem not to be in Dennis path, they are
saying we will have tropcial storm winds and of course a lot of rain.
I am preparing my office now to shut it down and get home to board up.
Had to go out on the road about 1 hour ago - everyone is on the road! So
much traffic. People are buying lumber to board up and of course the grocery
stores are packed as well as all the gas stations.
Sunny with a few clouds - just had a little rain - but this was just a small
patch of rain clouds, now sunny again.
More later

We got caught up in Tropical Storm Lillie just before it became a hurricane 4 years ago in Jamaica. It scared the **** out of us but the locals took it all in their stride saying "no problem mon, the beer is still cold, every thing gonna be alright".

People are starting to evacuate the Panhandle now. They got hit so very hard last season by Ivan. :( They have still not really recovered.
My little six year old is on his way down the coast. They hit rain in Washington, and I'm imagining will have rain for most of their southward journey.
Jebbie has declared a state of emergency. :sigh:
JuniorMickey, you are the southernmost, you will be ok, right?
Our south west members haven't checked in yet, so lets hope they are all preparing to be safe during a storm that is going to follow their coast line. :worried:

Well it's gone. God does work in mysterious ways.
Below are a few photos of my community taken
throughout the day. Wanted to post them as soon as I
took them but unfortunately I had problems connecting
to the internet. The first was taken at 2:08 pm,
second at 3:15pm, third at 3:32 p.m. and final at 5:23
pm. Not much happened in my community. We for the
most part were without rain. Right now nothing is
happening. Here and then you get a little sprinkle of
rain but that is it. I sort of expected winds and
heavy rain but I must say I was pleasantly surprised.
I am really rejoicing that this is all we got as I
really could not stand a lack of utilities. While we
are on that subject, an area in my community lost
power at about 7:00pm. It has not been restored and
will not be until tomorrow per the local power
company. This power outage does not seem to have been
due to Hurricane Dennis though. Anyway, I guess I
will be back at work tomorrow afternoon and I really
hope that all will be back to normal for all Jamaicans
by week end. Til tomorrow.....
..later!

According to the radar, the worst is past and all we have to look forward to is more rain. We were very fortunate....just a lot of rain and some wind with squalls near the coast. With the exception of a few coconut fronds on the ground in my yard, we came through intact. I am hoping that there will not be much damage to other properties...all my pears and mangoes are still on the trees and I hope the bananas survived! We were very lucky and my thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in Cayman, Cuba and the Keys...stay safe!

Tink I'm on the wrong side of it. As far as I know I'm not under any warnings or watches at the moment but I could be wrong since I haven't looked yet this morning. When I went to bed, the warnings and watches only went as north as the Miami-Dade county line. I'm about 10 miles north of there, east of US 1 (so I may head to Mom and Dad's for the weekend to get out of my flood prone area)
Of course we're supposed to go to the Marlins game :sigh: I have a feeling that's not going to happen

The bands continue to hit periodically. Trees (little ones) are down in the neighborhood. The pool is going to have to be taken down. The hard rains have dumped much fresh water into it.
Very odd weather. The winds are whirling, reminiscent of a tornado, but not that velocity. The howling started a little while ago, but has thankfully stopped.
Some very close and violent lightning and thunder.
Hoping all remain safe.

My Cousin and her husband live in Pensacola. I was really worried about them yesterday until I went to a Birthday Party at her Dad's house and she was there!!! :excited: It turns out that they drove straight through (it took them 23 hours) They were just going to get a hotel room but all the rooms were full coming north from there so they just decided to keep driving. I am so glad that this time I will not have to worry last time when Ivan hit we did not hear from her for two days. It was awful.
Everyone please stay safe! I will be thinking of you all. :rain:

We're going to Florida next Thursday for 2 weeks. Gonna be spending a lot of time in Orlando in the parks, staying in Davenport which is near Kissimmee I think. Do you think we'll be affected?

We fly out on Friday...also staying in Davenport.
There`s not a lot we can do about the situation, but it takes more than wind and rain to keep us away from WDW!
Que sera sera!

Angel,
We are flying in Wednesday morning, and I'm not even concerned. The thing is pretty much out of the area at this point. Still rain and wind, but nothing to stop you from going.
I'm more concerned for my husband, who will be flying down to join us Friday night, when the storm is expected to be traveling east. I know the planes can get above it though, and I won't be with him to listen to him stress, so I'm not too worried.

Thanks! One tries to be versatile, Dudes! :)
I did think that my addressing the honorable members of the UOG as Dudes and Gals was an endearing touch of informality, in the best surfer tradition. When (not if) I go to the White House to meet the President, I'll ask him "What's happening, Dude?" - they need shaking up over there.

Hurricane Dennis is just the "bee's knees" (that's 1920's slang - very retro).

A bit of odd, but interesting news from Hurricane Dennis...
MIAMI (Reuters) - Mother Nature tidied up a man-made mess off the coast of the Florida Keys when the force of Hurricane Dennis flipped a sunken U.S. Navy ship into the perfect position to help form an artificial reef.
Powerful waves and currents generated by the hurricane flipped over the 510-foot (155-metre) USS Spiegel Grove and set it to rest on its keel on the ocean floor, reef project managers said on Tuesday.
That was the position Key Largo scuba divers and tourism promoters had aimed for when they scuttled the 6,880-tonne hulk in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary in 2002.
"I'm flabbergasted," said Rob Bleser, the volunteer project director, after diving on the reoriented wreck on Monday. "Nature took its course and put it where it belongs."
The Cold War relic was the largest vessel ever deliberately sunk to form the backbone of a coral ridge to nurture sea life and amuse scuba divers.
Work crews had planned to slowly sink it upright. But it went down prematurely and rolled over, creating a navigational hazard when it landed bottom-up with the stern on the seabed and the bow jutting above the waterline.
Salvage crews used giant airbags and steel cables to nudge it over onto its starboard side, where it was safe from passing vessels but slightly disorienting for divers to swim through.
Then Hurricane Dennis blitzed past on Saturday, staying well west of the islands of the Florida Keys but kicking up 20-foot (5.6-metre) waves.
"Waves that high in close proximity to the reef can produce unusually strong currents with tremendous force," said National Weather Service meteorologist Matt Strahan.
The Spiegel Grove carried landing craft and cargo in the Mediterranean and Caribbean and was retired in 1989. It lies in 130 feet (40 metres) of water, a few miles off Key Largo.
