View Full Version : TCD...Possible the worst airline in the world!!!

Firstly, i dont want to scare anyone who is booked with TDC but this is what happened to us so make your own mind up.
We arrived at Glasgow airport for our 14.50 flight at 11.45 to be handed a poorly photocopied letter saying that due to technical problems we had a 24 hour delay to our flight. There was no one from TDC there only service air personnel who did not know anything. We we offered to be put up in a hotel with food and free soft drinks or a taxi home which we would have to pay for then reclaim. We elected for a hotel. We then had to queue to check the bags in and then take them with us to the Hilton hotel 3 hours later. We got to the hotel and had to queue again for 1.5 hours to check in. The hotel itself was very good other than it was very expensive ie £5.10 for a vodka and coke £11 if you wanted a burger and chips !!! The hotel wouldn't give us free soft drinks as TDC had told them not to despite us having letters saying the opposite. We went into Glasgow to find a march taking place. Police everywhere and wierdos chanting and shouting so we had to go back to the hotel. I spent £60 on a few drinks before raiding the mini bar and phoning friends in America to tell them we would be late. The next day the hotel handed us a bill for £26 for the phone call which i refused to pay telling them to hand it to TCD. I am still waiting for the mini bar bill!!!.
At 10.30 we were taken back to Glasgow airport to find our plane was still to come up from Gatwick. We checked in again and hung about waiting for the plane. I spoke to a supervisor at 2pm who assured me that the plane was on its way and we would be leaving at 14.50 as planned. It was stocked and clean and "a really fantastic plane" and not to worry. We also found out that our plane from the previous day had gone down to Gatwick to cover the flight to Sanford from there. What a cheek !!! They left us without a plane to cover London!!! Eventually at 14.30 we saw the plane land and we got to board. I was in premium upper deck so got on first. The first thing i saw was wires sticking out the panels in the front!! very reassuring. It was absolutly filthy and hadn't been cleaned at all. our welcome refreshment was water or diluting orange juice that they didn't even put water in so you couldn't drink it. We sat for a further 2 hours until we took off. In total 26 hours late all because TDC didn't have a plane. When we got going the first thing they did was try to sell us crisps and snacks. We refused to pay and asked when the meal was coming as we were all hungry by then. We were told 20 mins. It was 2 hours later before we were fed. After the snacks they came round with drinks. As i was right at the front i was first. I asked for vodka and lemonade and was told that the trolley hadn't been stocked so he had to "nip back to stock it". 30 mins later i got my drink. The tv' s didnt work so for the whole flight there was no entertainment. When the food did arrive it was ok. About as good as any other airline, however i had paid for premium upper deck so should have had an upgraded meal. Nope you guessed it, exactly the same as everyone else on the plane. We were supposed to have dedicated cabin crew but i went downstairs to find our crew serving down there. I pressed my wee light for service to get another drink. 1 hour 23 mins before they came to me. He seemed very put out when i told him i had waited such a long time as he was very busy!! the cheek of me asking for another drink!!. By the way i am still waiting for the drink as he never came back with it. People i spoke to in economy said the service down there was exactly the same....very poor. I asked the chief purser for a complaint form as they say we should do on the TCD website but they didnt have any. We asked why the plane was sent to Gatwick instead of us using it to go on time and she denied it saying that it went down empty to be repaired and then sent back up for us today and there was nothing they could have done about it. Her face ,when i produced a boarding card for 11.30 am from glasgow to gatwick the previous day from one of the uncleaned ashtrays, was a picture. She took my name and promised TDC would be in touch. When we finally landed and got through immigration we went to collect the car to find out TDC hadnt told Dollar we had paid premium insurance. The guy wanted our credit card but i refused. He was very helpful and told me to get it sorted before we returned the car and all would be fine. That was another 2 hours of our hols wasted trying to sort it out by having to go to a TDC shop. Even then i had to point out that line on the pc that said we had paid as the guy couldnt find it !!
Coming back we had to queue at the check in with the manchester flight as they both go out at the same time. 800 people checking in with only 3 desks open. And how can 2 flights go out at exactly the same time? Nope they didnt. We were sitting for over an hour before we left. Exactly the same plane but we felt really priveleged as the tv's were fixed. The service was exactly the same as the outbound flight...very bad!! Got offered 1 drink the whole flight but offered plenty to buy!! Food was cold this time and welcome refreshment didn't appear.
Speaking to other passengers some had villas booked with them and got the wrong ones allocated ie 3 bed instead of 4. Took them 24 hours to move them!!
I have been lucky enough to have traveled quite a lot throughout the world on many different airlines, and without a doubt TCD or Air Atlanta, whatever you call them, are easily the worst by a mile. They tell you nothing, the service is diabolical, they dont try to fix problems they just expect you to accept it. We paid £199 each extra for premium but other than a more legroom we got exactly the same as economy. The economy on both virgin and BA were far, far better than the premium with TCD. I appreciate thay are a budget airline but i am going to ABTA and trading standards and even if i have to, a small claims court to get some money back as they did not provide the service we paid for, budget airline or not.
If anyone had booked with TDC for the future i hope everything is ok for you but i know this flight is not an isolated incident as TDC seem to be like this a lot. If you havent booked yet then i strongly recommend you book with virgin or BA and avoid this bunch of cowboys like the plague.

Oh my god, what a horrid journey, i flew with My Travel once and their entertainment system (TVs weren't working) it was the longest 9 hours or so of my life, so i can imagine how you felt.
I am so pleased that I am flying with Virgin in January.

Sounds similar to the time we had the last time we used them - if you do claim anything back - all we got was the extra we had paid for the premium seats - don't expect to get it for 1 whole year!! Back then they used Airtours and similar things used to happen and we'd get an old DC10 to fly home in. You live and learn. To be fair to Airtours - we have had some very good flights with them - when they get it right but when they get it wrong - they are really awful.
Katie :)
PS did you end up having a good holiday?

They tell you nothing, the service is diabolical, they dont try to fix problems they just expect you to accept it.
I've travelled extensively too and I feel the same as you do!
I've seen the service go down on most of the airlines from the wonderful days of silver cutlery and cloth napkins on BA 1st through to TCD trying to sell me a midget sized swig of diet pepsi for some stupid amount of money.
TCD are the second worst airline I've ever flown with (the worst being the defunct Sebena who threatened to throw a pregnant woman with a stroller off the plane if she didnt "<beep>ing well sit down and <beep>ing stop pressing her assistance button" (she wanted a glass of water so I guess it was really asking a bit too much  )
My experiences (two sadly) with TCD have shown me that when EVERYTHING works, and you're lucky, you can have a no frills "just get me there" flight. If anything at all goes wrong though, you'll experience horrid delays, staff who REALLY don't care at all and possibly a plane with none of the nice shiny entertainment systems and seats/upgrades that the brochure promises.

Sounds awful,,,,,, we are traveling TCD this sept lol, However we knew the score with them having traveled with them before, we bring our own meals and cold drinks and even entertainment via mobile dvd players, it's just a seat to us, but what happened to you is just taking the pee, you are right to go to ABTA £199 extra for that service :(

The good thing about the internet is that most people now have the opportunity to research any company they do business with and travel is well catered for by web sites like this one.
I have lost track of the number of people who come on these forums and ask something like 'I have just booked with ABC. Are they any good?' Easiest thing is to ask first then think about booking.
TCD nightmare stories abound and you seem to have experienced one of the worst. Will it put people off? Doubt it because most folk tend to say they have seen the bad reports but then decided to risk it.
Personally I think a well deserved holiday should not be left to luck and therefore tend to go with those companies who have a better reputation.

You poor things, it sounds terrible. Its bad enough when you have a delay of a couple of hours so I cant imagine how it must have been for you having a delay that long. And, to finally bored the plane and have all that ahead of you for 9 1/2 hours, well, what can I say. :sigh: . What a load of rubbish.

My experience was pretty lousy too. I mostly had admin problems. It took five lots of invoices before they got the details correct. I was fed up with the waits and total ineptitude each time I called. We flew out last August at hurricane time. The 2nd hurricane had just finished but thank goodness we got away. Although we booked through TCD we were flying Virgin as we couldnt get the odd number of days we wanted in our chosen accommodation.
Thank goodness we flew with them! When I met up with the person staying in the next room she was in a bad way.
They had flown out from Gatwick 3 days late - well that couldnt be helped but what happened at Gatwick certainly could. They were told by TCD to go to the airport only to be told they wouldnt fly out that day. Fair enough, TCD said they would be back in a few hours to make arrangements for accommodation. No one turned up nor did they the next day! The passengers (kids included) slept on the airport floor for 2 days. There was a near riot - still no TCD! Armed police arrived as did members of the press and TV.
Still no TCD! The passsengers eventually got away on Monday afternoon. I on the other hand flew with Virgin and had no wait. When they arrived at the hotel at midnight there were no rooms for them. TCD hadnt bothered to inform the hotel they would be late arrivals and the rooms were reallocated. They had to drive five miles to get another hotel for the night. Next morning they got back to Homewood and were informed they all had to go to the TCD office - they lined up for 4 1/2 hours while 1 man dealt with all their queries. These were seasoned TCD travellers. They had been 7 times with them but never again. I have heard that others were treated extremely well during the hurricanes but it must have been after this.
I booked my taxi with TCD for my return from the All Stars. I confirmed it the day before. (twice stating MUSIC) Guess what? - they sent the taxi to the wrong hotel and we nearly missed the flight. What do I think of TCD - awful! For those of you lucky enough to have had good experiences, thats great. However I have only ever had minor problems with Virgin and wouldnt touch TCD with a barge pole.

When my TV wouldn't work on a Virgin (economy) flight back from Washington, the crew apologised profusely and gave me £25 of duty free - and I wasn't even planning to watch TV, just listen to some music! :D
I guess that's the difference between a company that values your custom and one that doesn't.

fingers crossed for you!!!!!!
For what it's worth, I think the best way to describe TCD is "unpredictable". I think they have more bad days than others and when they're bad, they can be very bad (ie. they're rubbish at fixing problems).
HOWEVER! When all goes well, you get the scheduled plane, no faults, no delays etc... I suspect that for the money it's absolutely fine!

Completely agree with you! and although we've all been down on TCD because of experiences, its also fair to say loads of people have had bargain flights from them and been completely happy

From what i gather from other people who have traveled TCD, the probs i had were common with TCD. They definitly seem to have more delays, more unhappy passengers and a lot more probs than any other airline especially their flights coming out of Glasgow. Yes they are a budget airline but they should provide a far better service than they do and they are still answerable to ABTA. One of the biggest probs was that we were all kept in the dark about what was happening and any excuses that we recieved all contradicted each other. It was as if they didn't care what happened to us as they had our money. For anyone booked with then for the future, the good news is that they will have to improve their service as there are going to be so many complaints to Trading Standards and ABTA from my flight and others that we have heard of that if they dont improve thay will get grounded.

July 19th, 2005, 22:10
One other thing i meant to add to everyone booked with TCD is that despite the horrendous trip to get there and we lost 26 hours of our holiday, we still had a fantastic time, as will all that go there. We did not let the flight spoil our holiday as we had decided there was nothing we could do over there so forgot all about it until now, back home, and can try to do something about it from here. The flight is important when going transatlantic but it is not the most important thing. The holiday in Florida is, and whoever you fly with, once you are there it will be fantastic.

yes, i agree with that.
our (short compared to yours) delay from gatwick to sandford was made worse because we were told different stories - even as we were waiting to board on our return journey the people behind me told me they'd overheard the pilot saying something different once we'd landed at sanford

I'm afraid personally I wouldn't even consider them no matter how cheap they were. I've read more bad reports than I can keep up with about stinking toilets onboard, wires hanging down, no TV's, no upgrades, huge delays, no representatives when things go wrong. I got a quote from them and after adding my car and extra baggage allowance (still nowhere near as much as Virgin's free allowance) and paying to sit together the difference booking with them and Virgin was less than £400 and I had to stick to their standard 14 night holiday plan. I personally wouldn't risk it for that amount. A company only shows it's true colours when things go wrong and all the reports i've read on TCD show they don't make any kind of goodwill gesture for delays/downgrades etc. They don't have a big enough fleet to cover when there are problems and one of their 'new' TCD branded jumbos actually came into service in 1980 for Cathay Pacific, so it's not exactly new.
When we were delayed with Virgin (because they were using the old Air Atlanta planes coincidentally!) we were put in a 5 star hotel immediately, fed, given free drinks, informed all the way and given 50% off future flight vouchers as we boarded the plane. We came out with over £4000 worth of Club flights they didn't have to give us, they were purely a goodwill gesture and on top of that we claimed on our travel insurance too. A replacement plane was flown up from Gatwick for us without there being a knock on effect for other flights.
I know what i'm getting with Virgin and i'd rather pay that bit extra for peace of mind :)

oh god that sounds dreadful. we are going with TCD in nov this year and after reading this i am worried about the flight as my DH has never flew before and i don't want to put him off flying for ever if its a bad flight but i also know that not every airline is wonderful all of the time myself and DS, DD flew to OZ a couple of years ago with emerates ( voted best airline for 6years running at the time:lol: ) and we had a horrible time with them my DS was 6 at the time and felt a bit air sick:oops: when i asked for a sick bag i was give a carrier bag and told to put it under the seat in front of me when he had been sick and this was only two hours into a 23hour flight what a great smell that was. the food was cold and dry the staff were nowhere to be found when need. So here's hoping that TCD will be ok as it makes a big differene to the cost to go with another airline as we are on a tight budget.

In your next contact with TCD,it would be worth mentioning the topic of TCD customer service ( or lack of.......... ) is a hot one on these and many other Disney boards, to the point of great notority. Therefore, perhaps their so called "amazing" price offers just don't cover the cost of decent customer service when things do go wrong, as they can with any airline.
I too have priced TCD against Virgin several times and for the "amazing" price difference of £400, I like to know that we (in particular, our kids) will be treated with the courtesy we deserve should problems arise. That sort of peace of mind is something I wont budget on. :)

Sorry to hear what you experienced, just shoddy imo.
Like anything in life you get what you pay for, we have enquired with virgin, and to be honest, on all occasions the difference has been more than £400 for my family.
I know about the bad publicity they collect, I just hope our dealings with them are without problems, which to be fair, they have been in the past.
I would sooner take the savings we make, in excess of £400, and spend that money at the other end.
Gladly now, things have tightened up with regard to how companies are expected to deal with customers, hence the drink vouchers, hotel stay overs etc;
Virgin and ba are not without their faults, I even read one complaint from a guy holidaying in florida with his family who was stitched up by cabin crew on a virgin flight, he was detained at the other end, and has never to date had an apology from richard branson.
What this guy and his family went through I would take a flight delay, tatty looking plane anytime.
Hope you get sorted with your complaint to abta.
Bill.

We have flown with Virgin four times and every time they have messed up our kids meal, but I would still fly with them as first choice. I have had quotes from TCD on numerous occasions, but they don't come anywhere near the price we pay with Virgin, I don't know whether they base their prices on four in a room and we are only three, but they are always way more expensive. Sorry you had such a bad experience!

Going with TDC in October and trying to look on bright side as nothing we can do about it now and they were sooo much cheaper. 1 thing that is confusing me is paying for drinks, when I booked it was stated that soft and alcoholic drinks were free, is this not the case? Also web site says that it has upgraded a lot of its flights for this year, so are all these dreadful experiences recent or is there a chance they may have got better? (always hopeful). We have flown with Virgin and American Airlines before and they were always so lovely and couldn't do enough, so this may be a bit of a culture shock!

We dont want to put people off too much, just make them aware of our experience. I know people too who have travelled with TCD and were very happy with the flights. I booked with them on recomendation from a friend who went with them before. However from what i have read before i went, and from our own experience, i believe that you have more chance of delays, poor services and old dodgy planes with TCD than any other airline. I hope your flight is good as i wouldn't wish what happened to us on anyone.

However from what i have read before i went, and from our own experience, i believe that you have more chance of delays, poor services and old dodgy planes with TCD than any other airline. I hope your flight is good as i wouldn't wish what happened to us on anyone.
Euanhi euan
yep understand where your coming from .....but for us who have yet to travel with them ..were just having to cross our fingers and hope for the best .......as i have said earlier the trip is being paid for by my in laws so im not in a position to change airlines
im also hoping by going in february it might be a bit quieter for travel city direct lol

Sezzy, We went in June and soft drinks, orange juice, spirits were free - I think you had to pay for champers or something like that but nothing else.
There was a bottle of warm water on the seat upon boarding but they did not stock any more water so that was not an option!
We were assured we were due to go on a "new" jumbo - well, it was new - new to TCD I guess!! It was an OLD Air Atlanta plane - that said, delays and all, we got there and survived it. However, our delays were nothing compared to the one Edg experienced - shocking :nono:

will you lot stop it! I booked a couple of weeks ago with TCD and (as I said in a previous thread) we know that they are a budget / no frills airline. However, all these adverse comments are staring to worry me. I think we'll take the portable DVD, some food and drinks, portaloo, parachute and sleeping bags for the delays!
Seriously, I've heard all sorts of bad things and some very good things so I guess I'll just have to face the music from the kids if things do go wrong

Martin, I'm with you on the worrying thing. But I feel really bad because its me that booked flights on TCD for not only my family but mother/father in law, nephew and niece. They left it to my 'capable' hands and trusted my judgement (mad fools). Just hope there are some large cupboards/orafices to hide in should it all go wrong. But, I am always the optimist, and have utter faith all will go well! The countdown to the holiday is all part of it, so I am not going to let something that hasn't happened yet (and hopefully not at all!), ruin it.

Sezzy you most probably will have a super flight wihout hitches. The best thing now is that you are forwarned.
Hope everythinh goes well for you.
We also booked TCD for the first time and it was also my decision and paid the extra £350 each to upgrade to SF and that was for the kids too. My mum and dad also paid that, so i will also be responsible for it too. However if all does not go to plan i know they will be fine about it, i have already told them that tcd have some dodgy bad press. So lets hope we both have a great flight but more importantly a superb holiday. :)

Sezzy, no amount of reassurance from people here is going to help, because in the same position I would feel the same.
All I can say is that we have flown with tcd twice, this will be our third time, third time lucky? :fingers: but yes the planes are not plush, dangling wires? I have never noticed any, that is not to say it has not been the case.
I see a plane journey as a means to an end, as long as we get there with as little disruption in between it does'nt bother me, as I have said before I would sooner spend the money I have saved by not flying virgin or ba on the family in orlando, I mean the rest of the family are fine with the past experiences with tcd, why should I be any different?.
Maybe there will be nightmares this time around, I hope not, but that is life, we are all on this planet a very short time and a long time dead, too long imo to worry about things that may not even materialise.
We learn as we live sezzy, I would'nt beat yourself up over it, I am sure your folks are decent enough to know that there is only so much you can influence, I wish I could influence the lottery every week, would get a pilots licence and get my own plane

Tracy, from past experiences with tcd you get your drinks free, we did get the tv on the seat backs but hey! the movies they put on are not what you probably have'nt seen before anyway!
You and your kids have a great time out there, as I say, see the flight as a means to an end, when you see the beaming smiles on your kids faces at disney

Thing is cath, who do we blame for that? even insurance companies dont accept liability for " acts of god "
When we did the miami south beach sizzle two years ago, we were talking to the bus escort on our way down to miami, and she told us that she sometimes escorts the space centre trips, as you know, if you're there at the right time you may see the rocket launch.
But she told us that kennedy space centre can cancel at the drop of a hat, for things such as bad weather etc, so maybe tcd are not the worst airline in the world  :rotfl:
And she said that even though it stated this on people's tickets, her and the driver still had to endure abuse from disgruntled people.

Thanks for all your reassurances. The worrying was just a blip. Have put all thoughts of flight probs away. Gonna take loads of food/drink, things to do, so if we get decent plane it will be a bonus, if not, we are covered. There is nothing worrying can do about delays, so wont waste my energy. We don't have any young children on trip, so really there is nothing we cant cope with. We booked TCD cause we too wanted to have the extra money to spend when actually out there, and as 4 youngest members are teenagers, we can cope without a lot of extras you need when they are young. They are all happy as long as they have their MP3's, game boys and a continuous supply of food and drink, no matter what else is going on around! We have decided to maybe not make too firm plans for where to eat on first night, in case we are much later than anticipated. Now I am gonna get back to being jealous of my friend who is going in a fortnight and jumping about saying only 12 weeks to go!!! :D

I'm going with them on Thursday! - so I'll let you know what they're like. We've travelled to Florida with a few different airlines but it's a first with TCD. We've had good and bad experiences - I think it's down to luck. We had a terrible plane last year - First Choice - a huge delay, filthy plane, 11 hour flight home as the plane had to fly primarily over land, therefore we flew the whole length of the USA coast, Canada, Greenland and Iceland, as some computer wasn't working (honestly!). They kept us on the runway for two hours having already been delayed for three hours, therefore we were actually on board the aircraft for about fourteen hours by the time we landed at Manchester. They wouldn't serve any drinks until we were airborne and then came round and charged us for them!
I firmly believe it's down to luck - dependent on the cabin crew and flight schedule. I would much prefer to spend my money in Florida! My cousin has just come back and has travelled on Air Atlanta. He had a really good flight out and an ok flight on the return so I'm hoping for the same. I'll let you know.

DIY holidays can work out a lot cheaper than through a travel company, but bare in mind that with tailor made packages you do not have the same legal protection as a package holiday.
On the matter of airline complaints, have a look at this link, I found it interesting, particularly as tcd were not in the top ten

If you book DIY you ARE covered if you book through a third party like travelocity/Ebookers as they are ABTA, ATOL and IATA bonded :) ....as are airline-network for your car etc. The only thing you MAY not be covered on is booking direct with an airline. If you use your credit card for booking though you will be covered for your flight too.

Just a clip from a travel rights page I visited.
" European law does offer some protection for "packaged holidays" as travel companies by law must protect their customer's money. It defines "packages" as a "pre-arranged" holiday consisting of several different elements such as flights, accommodation, transfers and ferry crossings. However should you buy a "tailor-made" package where elements are organised for you at your request (rather than as a pre-arranged combination) you may not have the same legal cover. Similarly if a travel operator offers a hotel only holiday it is not bound to take out financial protection."
This was what I was meaning. :D

TCD are not in the top ten Bill probably because they are not an airline. The same Air Users Council came out with this recently and it shows a different picture although it does refer to last summer. Over 40% of Air Atlanta flights were delayed by at least an hour and they were the worst according to the AUC.

I would imagine terry that if they operate as a air travel company they would be eligible to be included in any surveys.
My last flight on air atlanta staffed flight was last year, this went very smooth indeed, maybe about 30 mins late leaving manchester, but airlines can only be responsible so far, if a flight is coming in late from the opposite direction, then there is not a lot they can do.
We had a great flight time, so the initial 30 min delay was more than made up for once we took off.

What amazes me about TCD is that they are a long established company and have managed to keep going despite the competition, 9/11 etc and over the past few years giving a decidedly erratic service. We must have used them at least a dozen times but only prior to them chartering their own planes. Since then we have never used them again because of the widely reported problems.
Being very old we have been on many trips and through a lot of good luck but also with some planning we have managed to avoid most of the problems. In fact the only significant delay we have ever experienced was with Virgin and that must have been 15 years ago.

So the problems expressed about air atlanta are nothing to do with tcd? I would think that if tcd use air atlanta any complaints has a reflection on tcd, you started by saying that tcd are not an airline.
Although the survey I quoted was from 2004, I see no mention of tcd or air atlanta for that matter in the survey I read.
I must be different in that I take what people say with respect but also realise that every flight is an individual experience, I.e... a cup of tea made for me may be ok to me but not to another person, our individual perceptions are different.
Before I sit down on my seat, if it was a bit wet I would calmly ask the flight attendant if they would not mind drying it for me? where as somebody else may rant and rave about it.
Give and take I say, but travel companies need to always be aware of their customers needs. :)
