I would not think they are ashtrays as there is nothing along the edge that allows for a cigarette to be set down while still lit.

Candy dishes perhaps?

Some ashtrays are smooth like that. Those look old since they have the 70's style D in WDW on them. An ashtray is where you put the ashes from your cigarette.

True, true. But don't most of them have little places to hold the cigarette? Also, I thought Disney did not do smoking paraphanalia? I know they don't allow matches or lighters with WDW or Mickey logos of any sort. That prohibition might extend to ashtrays? Again, just purely guessing here.

They definitely look like something from the seventies though, regardless of their intended purpose. The logo design, the colors and the style are all from at least that era.

I've seen ashtrays that didn't have the grooves. Did Disney have that ban in place in the 1970's? I swear I remember everyone smoking back then. Of course I did grow up in the heartland of tobacco country

You know, Johnie? I don't know! I know about the ban now, was told about it a number of years ago by WDW merchandise CM, but don't know how long it has been in existance. I guess I just thought it was a ban from the beginning.

Yes, I've seen folks use smooth edged glass items for ashtrays but just thought that they were using a candy or mint dish because they didn't have ashtrays. I know my mother kept a couple of flat dishes quite similar to those in the photo in shape, depth and style for smokers when they visited (now no one is allowed to smoke in her home). She said they were mint dishes, but since she had no "proper" ashtrys she used those for the purpose.

All I know is that she kept them separate from her other dishes and glassware when they were not in use.

That is interesting Tink. So I guess our Zippo plant won't have any MM on the lighters. In a way I like that. The only time I use a lighter is to burn papers or get the wood stove started.

They look far too pretty for anyone to use them as ashtrays

Hmmm not sure about these specifically, but judging from ebay, apparently Disney *used* to sell or at least produce smoking accoutrements...( This one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6547578259&category=1380&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1) appears to be from around the same "era." As does this one. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6548001135&category=1152&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1) ) Although, like others, I'm not convinced this particular piece *is* indeed an ashtray....interesting piece though...

I have to agree mm, I'm not totally convinced they are ashtrays either.

All I know is what I was told by a CM. Disney does not allow the WDW logo (and specifically Mickey Mouse) to be used on anything associated with smoking. Now, she told me this in the early nineties, so things could obviously have changed over the years.

I think the "smoking stigma" has changed drastically over the years...it used to be incredibly common place and accepted, now, not so much so. Perhaps they have, like others changed their stance over the years...

Either way, I believe that *is* most likely the practice now...andthis seller (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6548254444&category=138&ssPageName=WDVW&rd=1) is probably violating some serious copyright laws.

That was my first thought, but my DW pointed out that her parents used to use an ashtray from a ski resort that didn't have the places to hold cigarettes. It was similar in size and shape to this item.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I wondered if it was a knock-off because I can't imagine Disney sanctioning "Mickey Kids" on smoking material.

Disney did sell ashtrays back in the 70's because I have 3 of them that are blue glass with the caslte they are fluted edges and very pretty I dont smoke - and would not use them as ashtrays if I did - I use them as candy dishes you could use them to keep jelwery in them too!!
