Mine didn`t on our cruise a couple of weeks ago, although I put this down to the fact that I was using a UK phone.
It worked fine on dry land though.

Since there are NO cell phone towers out in the middle of the ocean your cell phone most likely will not work unless it works off of a satellite feed.

We have Nextel service and it works up to 60 miles out at sea. Basically a few hours after leaving Port Canaveral. After that, it depends if there are compatible services at Nassau. No service at Castaway Cay.

Wasnt sure if maybe the ship ot-self had a cell tower.

Like SM said some work really far out into the ocean, so maybe if the ship had a tower, it would "hold" the signal untill they reached land on eaither side.


Oh well, just wondering.

I know some do have a "mini-cell" setup rather like is being proposed to have on airplanes soon :/

We have Verizon and my husband works for them so he say to text message when you have signal in a foreign country, and you won't get the roaming fees! And we had no signal if we couldnt see land! Like they said not many towers in the middle of the ocean!
