Tell me about embossing! :D

I've seen the embossing powders, and know you use a heat gun on them, but how do you get them to stick to the card?

They create a metallic finish, right?

I'm making the programs, place cards, etc for the wedding and would like to get a metallic effect somehow :)

WDWGrandma introduced me to heat embossing and I use it all the time :)

You'll need a pigment ink or an embossing ink (if you can't find them, let me know I'll send you some). Once you stamp your image with that, sprinkle the power on, shake off the excess and heat it up. You get the pretty raised image. If you still have the Christmas card I sent last year, you can see some embossing

Oh glory, you hit a lovely subject.

You stamp something, and while the ink is damp, you sprinkle on the embossing powder. The ink can be colored, or clear, or tinted, etc. You can also use adhesives of some kinds, for heavier powders or beads, but I've not done that. Tap off the excess. Heat it evenly, and watch the powder melt and adhere to the surface. Lather, rinse, repeat. :D

You can get a multitude of finishes - metallics, solids, mattes, irridescence, glassy, etc. The problem becomes when you start playing with it and you start collecting the stuff only to find you need to put an addition on your house because you have too much craft stuff... :hehe:

Oh! metallic effects can be done with metallic powers (and I can get those for you too ;))

Sounds like just the effect I'm after
I've seen some pretty embossing powders on ebay. I'll have to have a look for some inks now then.
Plus I need to track down that Cinderella Coach stamp :sigh:

Thank you both!

Will do!

Does the colour of the ink matter if you're going to cover it with powder?

JuniorMickey

That depends. If you're going for the color of the power, get embossing ink. it's usually tinted like pink so you can see it but it will show the color of the power. If you use a colored ink, you can use a clear power so you see the color of the ink

Do you use these pens (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tsukineko-Embossing-pen-SET-1-set-of-6_W0QQitemZ8209660061QQcategoryZ11795QQtcZphotoQQc mdZViewItem)to write and then sprinkle powder onto those like you would ink?

So I could just use this ink (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Clear-Embossing-Pigment-Ink-Pad-Plaid-Rubber-Stamp_W0QQitemZ8209991840QQcategoryZ11795QQssPageN ameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)and sprinkle powder on?

You could use those for writing, yep! For a stamp, you'll want a stamp pad like these (http://www.addictedtorubberstamps.com/?Manufacturer=190047)

I use Versamark ink pads (also known as 'watermark' pads) for embossing since I normally use colored embossing powders. I love the metallics. Some folks should have received an embossed Christmas card from us last year - and if you got the one with the gold Christmas tree on it, that is an example of using Versamark with gold embossing powder. I also sent out some angel cards - again, Versamark ink with crystal embossing powder.

I have a couple of the Versamark pens, but to be honest, I haven't had as much luck with it as with a stamp and the ink pad. Not sure why... The pen has two tips - a narrow and a wide.

Oh, and you'll need a heat tool for setting the embossing powder. It is different from a hair dryer since it only puts out heat but no air, which would blow away the powder.
