Hi just returned from Fort Wilderness , we took the boat to MK and you went passed River Country water park . I know it closed a long time ago but it is still lit up at night and we had a walk up to the entrance where there was a sign just sayin River Country closed ( just a wooden sign ) You could see waht looked like umbrellas up and if I did nt know better would have thought it was going to open later in the day .
it was eerie .

I have some great memories of going there when I was younger. One time I managed to come off my rubber ring going down a flume and smacked my head on the concrete - then my ring floated off down the rest of the slide and I was left standing totally stranded! My best friend then came floating past me wondering what I was doing just standing there clutching my head! It took 3 people to haul me out :D

My parents and sister went once, but I never got the opportunity of actually going. My parents described it that it was like swimming in a lake and we could get that expierience where we live now. They prefer Typhoon Lagoon, and Blizzard Beach. There used to be a rumor that they were going to make River Country another pool for the people in Fort Wilderness. I would have liked that since we were always at the Fort Wilderness.

Here is some history on River Country and Discovery Island:
This is an aerial view of Discovery Island and River Country. DI opened on April 8, 1974 as Treasure Island. The name was changed to Discovery Island on January 1, 1978. It officially closed on April 8, 1999 (exactly 25 years later) but continued to operate until July 9, 1999 after all the animals had been relocated to AK and other zoo's around the country.
River Country opened on June 20, 1976. It was the first and only water park at WDW until June 1, 1989 when Typhoon Lagoon opened, followed by Blizard Beach on April 1, 1995. It closed on September 1, 2001.

I did a search on Google Images and there are a lot of them. Here is the link:
Google Images - River Country (http://images.google.com/images?q=%22river+country%22+Disney&svnum=100&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&start=0&sa=N&filter=0)
If you only get 2 or 3 pages, go to the last page and all the way at the bottom click on "repeat search including ommited results" and you will get about 10 additional pages with photos  .
Here is the best one:

The road that takes you to Fort Wilderness is just wild.
You are guaranteed to see deer, armadillos and snakes every night  .
If you drive by there around 2:00am or 3:00am, drive very slowly, there are three or four groups of deer that feed on the tender grass by the side of the road  . They will stand about 20-30 feet away from the road and you will recognize them by their silvery eyes.
