Yep, a bird has grounded a flight from sanford it seems, and a knock on effect is flights now running a day late:(

This happened several days ago and has delayed flights by 24hrs each day since. As far as I know, even tomorrows travellers aren't travelling until Tuesday so its still on-going. Some travellers have been told to claim on their own travel insurance, others that TCD will refund £30. Wow!
:thumbs:Good old TCD!

Supposedly flew into an engine!
I saw a programme on discovery that said a 747 turbine could injest an 60lb ostrich and still be functional!!!:p so just how big the Sanford "Ostrich" was is a mystery:confused:

what a load of bunkum how does a bird ground a plane for 24hrs, never heard of it affecting any other airlines exept tcd, you sure it wasnt dumbo that got sucked in not a sparrow

when we arrived at Sanford, one of the US TCD reps was chatting to us. We joked that it would be good if we could be delayed going back out by a day, and she said in all seriousness, that it was more than likely, cos the knock-on effect is that bad, they are gonna struggle to catch up!!
To be fair, at Manchester, the TCD reps did keep us informed and we were put up in the 'Radison' where they bent over backwards for us!

Although an engine is not destroyed by a bird strike it is not 100% and an airline would not fly again with the result, the problem is it would take a day or two to repair or replace an engine and all flights would be delayed as the aircraft could not fly twice in a day to make up the delay. With a small operator they would not have a spare plane to take up the slack. This happened to us in 1998 when our plane was hit on takeoff at Gatwick we were delayed over 24 hours and were eventually put on a Virgin flight as our plane had still not taken off from Gatwick

Speaking personally, I think I'd rather take my chances flying with the bird than with TCD, but that's just me ;-)

Is it just the return flights that are being delayed? I'm flying out of Gatwick on Friday with TCD.... returning on 9th Sept. Hopefully they'll have caught up by then.

I hope they catch up for the 10th September.
They will probably sort this mess out well before then. Its just a matter of when the next mess up occurs and you have to hope you miss that one.

I know Terry, i am worried to say the least, its such a shame that we have to worry about this when we should be looking forward to our holiday.

Try not to worry too much. I'm a massive worry head and as soon as they announced a day's delay, wanted to book with 'Virgin' there and then to get us out there!! But, we're here now and that's all that matters. You will have a fantastic time!!

Looking on the bright side, Catherine, September is one of the quieter months for Orlando travel, so less likely for things to go wrong. And I'm sure there cannot be too many dumb birds hanging round the plane engines, but you could take this:catapult:, just in case.

You know, before I came to this thread, I wasnt worried at all - our last trip with TCD was faultless.
But anyway, I phoned Travel City this morning and they explained that whilst they didnt know what species of bird it was, they knew it was enough to damage the plane - and as a result, the Saturday plane actually left on Sunday, and the Sunday plane left Monday - but the good news is that they only fly Fridays to Sundays, and that in the gap between last weekend and this theyve fixed the problem, and flights this weekend will be fine. They're now back to their normal schdule.
The guy also said something about it only affecting the Manchester flight?

just got back today. First we knew about this delay was when we checked in at TCD's LBV offices on Monday morning for the Monday evening flight.
We were told that due to "technical difficulties" the Manchester flights were delayed 24hrs from Friday.
We were advised to open our suitcases (in the car park) and remove enough clothing etc for a night at a hotel and to check in at the airport as normal.
To be fair, TCD allowed us to use their office phones to call family and friends to ensure we could arrange to be picked up on arrival at Manchester.
We arrived at Sanford just before 6pm and were told to line up and a bus would take us to the Marriot hotel in Lake Mary about 20 minutes away.
Everybody was fairly happy with this and we checked in and were given a decent enough room.
We were provided with Dinner on Sunday evening and breakfast and lunch on Monday, which was fair enough.
However TCD, at no time had anybody available at the Hotel to give out information and the hotel staff did their best. We had to be out of our rooms by 11 am and rumour was that we would be bussed out at 3pm. Buses started arriving about 3pm and people just made their way out when they felt like it...chaos as 300 or so people tried to get on 6 buses:wacko:
We got to the airport and the TCD reps were waiting with wads of dollar bills as compensation and all the information anybody needed ( I made that up)
We got to the airport at 4.15 and nobody from TCD was around and airport officials told us to go to the departure lounge which we duly did. By 6pm my family were pretty hungry so we spent my last 20 dollars on burgers and "fries". 10 minutes later a tannoy announcer asks all passengers to collect meal vouchers courtesy of TCD
At no point were we given any information from any TCD representative nor did we see any until we were boarding. When I asked the TCD rep for a moment of his time he shouted " I'm too busy to talk" and RAN into a staff only area. Running scared I felt.
I know this is long but I feel people should know how TCD treat their customers. We had a good flight going to Florida, a very basic hotel which we expected and no problems until we checked in. The lack of communication had to be experienced to be believed. The flight home left on time and we arrived an hour early in Manchester only to wait 25 minutes for a bridge from the plane to the terminal.
If you have booked with TCD you really have taken a gamble...some you win...some you lose.

 :rotfl: what they need to do is take off from the hanger, or put a big cage over the plane :D
Anyway, why dont they employ a guy with a gun to shoot the birds like they do at liverpool airport, but if the stories about the size of this bird are to be believed, I think you'd need a harpoon big enough to put shamou asleep
