View Full Version : Points for Virgin upgrades

I wonder if someone can clarify my position. I have 25,500 points. Can I pay for an economy seat and use 20,000 points to upgrade to PE both ways on my next holiday? Is it possible to upgrade using points to PE out to Florida and Club class back to Manchester? Does anyone know how many points I would need to do that? I realise it woud be easier to ring Virgin but, being the trusting soul that I am  I would rather ask you people 'cos I trust you more to give correct info.
Katie :)

In principal, yes you can BUT in practice the correct class of economy seat and the correct class of reward seat in PE or UC has to be available to do it. Flying Club are the only people that can check that for you. Reward seats are very limited and getting hard to get.
There is no Club Orlando to Manchester anymore, it's all Upper Class now. You don't have enough miles to do PE one way and UC the other if that's what you meant . That would be I think 10,000 from economy to PE one way and a further 30,000 from economy to UC back.

Thanks for that Paula - I knew I could rely on the good people of this board. Although I won't be going UC, at least I can go PE both ways and I am very flexible, so I am sure I will sort something out for next year. Failing that, there is always First Choice.
Cheers, Katie :)

The best use of your miles would be if one of you could get to 30,000 miles by getting a Virgin credit card or buying from Virgin wine etc, then you could get a 'companion PE seat' for 30,000 miles return. It works out about the same as buying 2 x economy seats.

Thanks again Paula - didn't know about the credit card thing. Something else to look at. I'll go and look at the Virgin site and look at the details. I'm getting excited about next year and I haven't had this years holiday yet!! This board (& Paula) is mine of information.

I may have read this wrong, but if I was to have 10,000 points, does that mean I can upgrade from Economy to PE free of charge (one-way)?

Yes Ad. but you have to phone the flying club to do it and I don't think it applies to Virgin Holiday economy seats as they're the wrong fare type.

Ah! I booked through Virgin Holidays... Ah well, at least we'll both be saving loads more points up then!
We curretnly both have aqbout 8,500 points. So, if we don't use them this time, we'll have about 17,000 each after this trip - so if we do something like the Virgin Credit card etc (and book our flight through VA direct) we'll be getting a "round trip" upgrade for the next trip then! :D

Both my girlfiiend and myself joined the club from your invites. It said that the bonus miles will be added to your account - I thought this would happen straight away when we claimed our "missing miles" - so have these actually been added to your account?

Cool :D
I just thought that, as I claimed miles for my previous flight (and this count as my own "qualifying flight"), that this would apply to you too. Ah well, you've got those lovely points to look forward to in May/June '06 then :D :D
Thanks again for the invite - it really is a good offer in my opinion given the real cost (in cash terms) that you would otherwise have to pay to upgrade!

You won't get recommendation miles if he's booked through Virgin Holidays i'm afraid Mike. Virgin Holidays are a special class of fare on VA flights and they don't qualify for referrals.

Maybe. I referred my parents ages ago and that's when I found out they didn't count. When we fly in May it will be the first time they have booked with VA since then, so i'll let you know if I get them. You do get referral miles for people who book VA flights through 3rd parties like Ebookers, Travelocity etc. It's just VH flights that don't count sadly.

When is it you go in '07??
For our next but one trip (which we may well take in '07 given we may get free upgrades) we will defo be booking direct with VA. This should still be within both of our 3 year limits, so hopefully you'll still get the miles before your trip :D

Your 3 year limit restarts each time your account is added to. Your VH flights will qualify for your own miles so you'll be ok. Mike's restart everytime he gets a CC statement so his will be fine too. I'm not sure if there's a time limit on referrals though. I know there is a limit of 10 people you can recommend.

Cool, well assuming we go in '07 (which I'm going to be pressing very hard for  ) we'll be going in the May - so there's no reason why you won't get those points eventually :D

No probs Mike
I was pretty naffed off when I realised I couldn't get VH referral miles, but really it makes sense. The reason a lot of people won't book direct with VA or someone like Ebookers is that you have to pay everything immediately. You need to book reward flights 11 months in advance because more and more people are fighting for 1 or 2 seats on each flight and many people don't want to have to pay the whole amount 11 months out instead of 8 weeks out or whatever it is with VH.
best stop plugging FC now or we'll never get seats

We were hoping to do that next year. We have over 8000 miles so we thought we could use them for PE (which we would realllly like to do), but no, we can only use 4000 for a miles plus money flight (you need 7500 for PE).......what a pain!

 Do you mean you have 8000 combined and wanted to book one way?
Vikki
August 26th, 2005, 23:31
No, we have 8000 combined and were looking at booking PE both ways. Well ideally we'd done economy going and PE coming home, but I'm not even sure you can do that with miles plus money.
PaulaK
August 26th, 2005, 23:35
ah I see! You mean you can't use more than 4000 because you need 15,000 for PE? No, you can't book one-ways on m&m.
Vikki
August 26th, 2005, 23:39
I'm not sure, this is what it says on their site:
With a combination of Flying Club miles and a special low price fare you can enjoy great Miles Plus Money offers.
The miles part. . .
2,000 miles in your account will get you savings on Economy round trip fares
7,500 miles will save you money on Premium Economy round trip fares
15,000 miles will mean savings on Upper Class round trip fares.
If you'd prefer to travel on a mixed itinerary basis (for example, flying Upper Class one way and Economy the other) all you need to do is halve the miles and the money required.
So it would appear I can do economy one way and PE the way back according to this, but if I can't use more than 4000 miles anyway........
I guess I'll find out when the flights are released :)
