View Full Version : Carry On Luggage

Take Me to Disn

I don't fly very often and have a silly question.:rotfl: Everyone suggests taking a "carry on" for the flight in case luggage is lost/late. My question is -- how large/small is considered a "carry on" piece of luggage? I have a set of luggage that contains the standard large, medium and small suitcases (they all have wheels). Would I be able to "carry on" the small suitcase, or do I need to purchase some type of duffle bag? I don't want to get to the airport and not be able to "carry on" my "carry on". Thanks for your help!

I fly for weekend trips and use my small suitcase on wheels. It fits perfectly in the overhead

Your small wheeled bag should be fine. You can always go to your airline's website and see what their dimension requirements are.

Remember also that the airlines also impose a weight restriction on carry on items...around 5 kg. seems to be the norm.

Thats true and some roll on are quiet heavy and use a lot of this allowance, if you have a lot to take perhaps use a small holdall :)

US Airlines are generally different. I've never had my carryon weighed (either of them)

Another thing that the UK airlines are getting strict about is the physical size of your carry on items...quite rightly IMHO.
It always amuses me seeing some folks struggling to fit oversized items in the overhead lockers and then complaining when they won`t fit!

Size is a different story. On my last flight (FLL to BOS July 4th weekend) they made a couple of people check their "carry-on" bags. They were huge. I have a small case on wheels, sometimes called a pilot’s case since it's about the size that the crew uses (although I've seen their cases get bigger so now mine is smaller). Like I said, in all my years of flying I have never had a carry-on bag weighed.

You wanna fly with Virgin JM, they seem to be very stringent concerning the weight issue, even when you fly in PE.

I've also never flown international so that could be different. My experience is limited to domestic travel

Your airline should be able to tell you the dimension limit, though saying that I think most are fairly similar as at Manchester Airport I saw 'cage' type things to check the size of carry-on luggage though I can't remember the exact measurements.
