View Full Version : US Chip/Crisp flavours

In the US what are the normal crisp/potato chip flavours? I dont imagine they'd be the same as the native UK flavours:
Prawn Cocktail
Cheese and Onion
Salt and Vinegar (whenever Ive asked for vinegar in the US, I've been greeted by the same face of a dog who's been shown a card trick)
Of course I could be wrong?

Here are some that come to mind right away
Sour Cream and Onion
BBQ
Salt and Vinegar
Regular
Jalapeño

Lays do salt and vinegar flavour potato chips.
Never seen prawn cocktail flavour out there though. How very uncivilised.

One of the few locations where I`ve seen vinegar widely available is at the Harry Ramsden`s fish and chips outlet in the "UK" at Epcot.

The lays sour cream and onion are good :)
They don't seem to sell the smaller bags much, just big ones.

There is a crab flavor, is that what your referring to?
Salt and Vinegar are very popular here. Well, at least in my part of Virginia. They are DH's favorite.
Other flavors:
Salt and Pepper
Cheddar and Sour Cream
Onion and Garlic
Honey barbq
Carolina barbq
Dill pickle
There are tons of flavors and lots of different companies.

I think prawn cocktails crisps are one of those quirky British things. :D They taste nothing like a prawn cocktail though.

Those new Black Pepper Jack Doritos seem to be getting quite popular.
Just thinking you could get a multipack of the different flavors (think lunch box size) to try more flavors!!:eat:

This is one of those things that's strange... the US has so much choice but when it comes to crisps they're so far behind <G>
The standard flavours seem to be bbq, plain, chedder & sour cream. You do occasionally see others but rarely in touristy places :) It's far from the UK crisp aisle where such wonders as hedgehog flavour exist
The bags are all massive too :/
My fave in the UK are cheese and onion and I remember once in a VERY expensive hotel (paid for by a large company) in Washington, I asked about them at the front desk at 3am (couldn't sleep). I went on to explain about prawn cocktail in pink packets (always), cheese and onion in green unless they're walkers, beef and so on.
Went around Washington doing meetings and got back to my room a couple of days later to find they'd got two six packs of golden wonder, one prawn cocktail, one cheese and onion  now THAT was service. I understand they'd actually ordered them in from somewhere and had them flown over.
Went back down that night to share with the night staff who indulged me by trying the different flavours. They looked less than impressed and I said hey its ok if you don't like them you know, and a woman who'd been doing checkins behind the counter basically spat the remains into a bin  she was so apologetic but said she'd never in her life tasted ANYTHING more disgusting than prawn cocktail crisps <G>

English crisps are easily the least boring I have found in any country! Noone has mentioned the walkers sensations range, which is now widely available and has flavours such as:
Chargrilled Steak & Peppercorn Sauce (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=39&flavourid=98)
http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif

Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=39&flavourid=60)

http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif
Thai Sweet Chilli (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=39&flavourid=62)
then they have oriental crackers (not like crackers in America - more like crisps, lol chips even!):
Cantonese Black Bean & Spring Onion (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=44&flavourid=93)
http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif
Indonesian Hot Wok (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=44&flavourid=125)

Tangy Malaysian Chutney (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=44&flavourid=88)
then they have poppadom bites:
Cool Yoghurt & Mint (http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/packinfo.asp?snacktypeid=47&flavourid=99)
http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif

http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif

http://walkers.corpex.com/cr15p5/walkpix/repeats/spacer.gif
you won't find variety like that in any other country, and thats just Walkers Sensations! There's hundreds of crisp (chip) varieties here!
yum yum :wiggle:

Here are a couple of others that were not mentioned for US chips:
Herrs Old Bay Potato Chips...if you like Maryland Crabs you might like these!:D
Heinz Ketchup Flavored Chips by Utz...sort of speaks for itself. Americans like ketchup on most anything especially french fries..it gives you that sort of taste.
And Pizza flavored chips by pringles!
I think that as much as flavoring, we tend to go towards texture with our chips..enter ridges, wavy, hand cut, kettle cooked ones...I am getting hungry:eat:
Any way you can get more information about chips and snacks at
www.taquitos.net (http://www.taquitos.net). Don't you just love the internet?

We also have pizza flavour, ketchup flavour, sausage and ketchup flavour, chicken and bbq sauce flavour, smokey bacon flavour, beef and onion flavour, scampi flavour, flamin' hot flavour, chargrilled steak flavour and loads loads more.
My favourite flavour ever (lol loads of USA - UK spelling disagreements here) has to be Monster Munches Spaghetti Flavour crisps. I haven't seen them for about 5-6 years tho. :(
If anyone ever sees them I'm willing to pay GOOD money for a packet!

Frazzles are veggie, as are prawn cocktail walkers.. But Skips and prawn Quavers are not. My bfs a veggie so i've had some pretty startling revelations of things that are/aren't veggie: Most beers aren't (Carling, Fosters, Stella etc) as it's filtered with fish gelatine.

I think that the Brittish Walkers is the same as the Dutch Smiths.
We to have the Sensations line. I love the Roasted Chicken and Thyme, expecially when it's been dipped into a Thai Chilisauce. :licklips:
And then we have:
Salt
Paprika (pepper)
Cheese and union
Cream and Chives
Ham and Cheese
Peanut

This is so off subject but I hope someone can help.
Back in the Dark Ages I was stationed in Berlin, Germany and we shared part of our Intel Site with Brits. The Nafi truck would come in the morning and sell snacks. You know...tea, crisps..whatever.
Well....they had the most wonderful sandwhich.....kinda a soft cheese with some type of onion, garlic or other herb...on a roll...not bread. Was to die for.
Is this a normal British type food and can anyone tell me what it is? Haven't had one since about 1987 and this thread has made me a little hungry!

American bread is a serious culture shock... I don't know whats going on there but it tastes all kinda sweet unless its well erm all sour ;-)

September 18th, 2005, 01:41
Yeah, most packaged American bread contains a bit too much sugar--except sourdough. And that is an acquired taste! I love the stuff when it's fresh out of the oven in San Francisco, but am less fond of it elsewhere!
Some of the store bakeries have what they call Artisan breads that are baked in the store (dough frequently made off-premises in a dedicated facility) that are more neutral. Usually French or Italian bread is not sweet--most of the American breads still have a slightly sweet flavour.
After all that, I'm basing the information on our local bakeries--not those in Florida!

Ah...bread....
We are lucky to have a whole food here that does some quite nice artesian breads.
Also several times a year I drive 20 miles (in Atlanta traffic) to a hole in the wall German bakery where they actually make brochen...German rolls....quite the yummy! Oh...they make eclairs and petit fours as well...and not that pre-packaged yuck you get alot of places.
I have tried Boursin....the cheese I am thinking of had a "sharper" taste...ah...the search goes on. But it sure is fun looking.
PS...what exactly is an English Bread Roll....since I don't eat sandwiches on regular loaf bread...unless my Aunt Jane makes it!
