I take it your going to Orlando? If so, I doubt you'll have any problems.
Rita just went up to a category 5 hurricane and is going to hit the Gulf Coast (Texas most likely).

As Johnie says, it's unlikely you'll have any problems :)))))
PLEASE don't worry about asking whatever questions you want to on here! We're all friendly and unlike other places you may have been, we really don't treat any question as stupid!

No need to be sorry. Geography isn't my strong point so if I was flying from the Uk, I'd probably be worried too.

The closest Rita got to Orlando happened last night (Tuesday) around 11:00pm.
Nothing to worry about anymore as far as Florida is concerned. We are keeping a watchful eye for the folks in Texas...
Some Pixie Dust their way would be helpful...

I bet you have lots of rain at the moment in Orlando! By the looks of this radar on weather.com anyway, good luck everyone in Rita's path, I cant believe there have been so many systems this season, only 4 more until they have to use the greek alphabet!

My mum and dad have arrived home safely from Cuba today.
It was a category 2 when it passed through Havana. They watched it all from their hotel window and said it was very scary. When they left last night they flew out in heavy wind, rain and a thunder storm and i was so glad to talk to them earlier.Off to see them as soon as i get the call to say they are indoors.
By the time Saturday comes i should imagine Orlando will be fine, the rest of the gulf coast however we will have to keep our fingers crossed for.

It appears, at the moment, that Galveston might get the "good" (western)side of Rita, as opposed to the "bad" (eastern) side, but it also appears that Rita will stick around east Texas for a couple of days. This could lead to major flooding. Of course, this could all change in the next 24 hours.

There is really no good or bad side of a hurricane. If the "bad" side has winds 130mph the "good" side might have winds of 100mph. That still doesn't sound "good" to me.

I should clarify. It's not the winds but storm surge involved when experts talk about the good or bad side. Nine out of ten people who die during a hurricane are killed by storm surge. When a tropical system hits, no one wants the right, or bad, side because the storm surge is the worst just ahead and to the right of the eye of a hurricane. This also impedes rain runoff, so flooding is worse. The left side has the winds blowing south, so the storm surge is less because the wind "pushes" the water away from shore. You will hear the experts constantly referring to the bad side because that's the side you don't want to be on if a hurricane comes towards you.
As for wind damage, the eye wall is the worst place to be, left, right, top or bottom.

Hurricane Rita Victim - Texas damages devastating
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We had to cancel our annual WDW Thanksgiving vacation because of the devastating damages to our area by Hurricane Rita. This will be the first time in seven years that my family will not be at WDW for Thanksgiving. A great disappointment since my children do not have grandparents with whom to share this family holiday and we have made our annual WDW visit a family tradition. :(
Like a gold Olympics winner, Hurricane Katrina is being well remembered in the daily news. However, Hurricane Rita caused a lot more financial damage. Four or more entire counties in Texas were declared Disaster area's. A great many homes and businesses were entirely destroyed. The two malls in our area -- one in Port Arthur, one in Beaumont were damaged beyond use. (Our home is located in the middle of these two larger cities.) We had substantial damage to both our home and business. Almost a month later, many homes do not have electric. Four refineries and ten off shore rigs were damaged.
We were displaced at a friend's lake property for three weeks. Our two children could not register at the local school because Texas has accepted over 350,000 displaced Katrina evacuees and we no longer have available space in our overextended school systems.
I pray that little or no damage is done by Wilma and that it does not effect anyone WDW vacation plans.
