After initially refusing to give me any compensation for failing to load all our luggage at Manchester and not doing so for the next two days, TCD have now offered me a 'goodwill gesture' of £100!
To be honest, I didn't expect to get anything as I know that legally, airlines are not liable to give compensation in the event of luggage going astray, so I think I'll accept their offer and as I've booked with Virgin for next year, never travel with them again.

Well done Tweenie
It's always great to hear of someone getting one over on the big boys.
We've never had the misfortune to lose our luggage and I hope we never do - I bet it's a total nightmare!

 Snap their hands off, probably wont get much more out of them............"goodwill gesture" means they'll offer you compensation but its without accepting responsibilty. What you'd expect from TCD I suppose.

Under EU regulations we have more rights now than we used to... it's just that the airlines oppose the regulations completely because they know it'll cost them money... but at the end of the day, they'll give you something as a "goodwill gesture" and hope you go away because they know if you keep going, you'll win!
You've done well to get something out of them though, no argument :) just don't let them get away thinking they have no legal responsibility, they do!
From the EU website: http://europa.eu.int/comm/transport/air/rights/doc/2005_01_19_apr_poster_en.pdf
You may claim up to 1 000 SDR** for damages caused by the destruction, damage, loss or delay of your baggage on a flight by an EU airline, anywhere in the world. If the airline does not agree with your claim, you may go to court.
For damage to checked-in baggage, you must claim in writing within 7 days of its return and for delayed baggage within 21 days of its return.
You can claim from the airline with which you have a contract or from
that actually operating the flight,if they are different.
**1 SDR = €1.18 at 30.9.2004
