View Full Version : Are you obligated to trade?

I have a few questions......My family has a few pins that we want to keep on our lanyard. Is it best to just keep those at home or do you have to trade if someone asks. This is our first time trading, and have a couple of lanyards with pins already from past trips but never traded.

Personally I only trade with CMs (and I'm 26!) I don't feel comfortable trading with the "professionals" that are at the parks and DTD and I've never had another guest ask to trade.
Most CMs will allow you to chose what pin you give them.
Some people will do one side of their lanyard for trading and one side that is non-trading

When trading with other guests, it's up to you and the other person what you trade for. If you don't like what they have, you don't have to trade.
When trading with CMs, it's completely up to you what you take from their lanyards and which one you give them. The only rule with CMs is that it's one-to-one. CM pins do not belong to them. They are there just to keep the trading going.

I have asked CMs and this is what they told me: There is absolutely no obligation to trade pins at WDW. When I go to the parks, I wear about 8 to 10 pins, depending on size, on my lanyard. Usually, one or two pins are my trading pins and I only trade with CMs. Don't let any of the "professional" traders at the parks try to force you to trade by saying that you have to trade the pins if they are on your lanyard.

Well we are in Florida now, and I had no idea how much fun pin trading is!! I know a few things to look for but would like to do some more research about pins. We are with our family, a party of 11 of us. My husband, daughter and I are the only ones that are trading so it's a little side amusement. I will definitely trade on my future trips. It's like going shopping your whole vacation with out the cost at each location!
Thanks so much for all your input :)

DS likes to trade each time we go but he usually only trades with CMs. He will also trade if another child approaches him but only if he wants to trade. Never feel under pressure to trade or else the whole object of pin trading is lost. Don't let the professionals force you into trading anything that you don't want to! It's meant to be fun!

I agree.. it is really fun but do not feel pressurised to trade your favourites. We have four full lanyards between us and most are commemorative of years/events etc. In DLRP this year we were asked to trade a lot of these but politely refused and even with the language barriers we had no problems.
Enjoy it..we think it all part of the Disney experience and a great way to start talking to people.

Just noticed Debbie, from Liverpool like me - and you'll be in WDW at the same time next year!

I wore some of my pins that I don't want to trade and I only traded with CMs but only ever got asked once for some of the rarer ones and there was no pressure when I refused. I was actually offered 3 for one fairly rare WDW one at DLP!

Absolutley not! People walk about with lanyards (eg, my brother) full of pins and won't trade them. I trade myself, but I trade and collect, and all my pins are on my lanyard.

My DM wears her lanyard and does not trade....but we just got back and there was one "civilian" in the park who was VERY pushy about wanting one of her pins! I think I finally almost yelled..."she doesn't trade...do you mind leaving us alone to eat our hot dogs?"
DB....he wears 3 (count them....3!) lanyards and has 2 for showing off and 1 for trading!
We love the "hunt" for the pins we really like! I got really lucky and found 2 of the lanyard pins with Chip & Dale eating snacks this trip....love them!
