My friend said that I don't need to take any cash with me cos it's easier to get money out of the cashpoint machines (atms). She said you get a better rate. Is this right? I must admit I would worry about not taking any cash. Can I have your views please.

We take next to no cash... just enough to pay for taxis/towncars (although they take credit cards often these days) and enough so we have some in store for small items in the parks.
The rest of the time, we use credit/debit cards (99% of the time in fact).
Getting money out of the cashpoints is expensive because you often pay a cashpoint charge of $x, then your bank will often charge you commission on the amount you get as well (though nationwide doesnt on some of their cards). So yes, the bank rate is better than the tourist rate you get when you convert £ to $ but when you add on the cashpoint charges and commission, you usually work out worse off.
We've found getting a small amount converted into $ and using credit/debit card for purchases is the best route.

I used my Nationwide cash card while I was there in Sept/October. or each $100 I withdrew, I got charged £56 - no other charges. I thought this was a very good exchange & certainly better than when I bought dollars at M&S earlier this year.

We also used our credit card, taking some dollars with us for smaller purchases. We did withdraw some money from the atm's too while we were there. Look at your card to see what they charge you for withdrawal.
