Must we wear these?

It's August. It's gonna be warm.
We're used to swimming in British waters which are VERY cold.
We're both excellent swimmers.
We'd rather just stay in our bikinis.

Wear them where? Discovery Cove? Yes, if your swimming with Dolphins. Anywhere else, no.

We did it in august and we kept ours on most of the day, the water is freezing............Plus you had to have them on for the Dolphins :)

It is freezing in the dolphin lagoon so you'll be glad to have them!! They also have flotation thingies in them which, considering how deep the pool where you snorkel with all the fishies is, you will also be very glad of!

You definately have to wear them. I wore one of the vests with a pair of swimming shorts as i thought id look a bit too horrific in the full wetsuit  . They also ask you to keep them on because of the bright yellow strips that they have on them - they can see you easily in the water then!

Yes I meant discovery cove *blonde*
Not really happy about having to wear one even for the dolphins swim but we'll see what they say when we get there. I hate wet suits. And I swim in the British ocean just fine without one so I doubt the water will be to cold but rules are rules! Thanks!

It's nothing to do with the temp of the water, it's the rule they have for swimming with the Dolphins. They are very strict with what you can or can't wear whilst swimming with them. They will even supply you with special sun cream that is safe for them.

Yeah I know about the suncream. I've swam with dolphins before and never had to wear a wetsuit or lifevest so was quite surprised to hear that people wear them at Discovery Cove!

That's their rules. If you don't abide by them you don't swim with their dolphins. Might be different at other places but that's the way it is at Discovery Cove.

As I said, rules are rules but I'll see what they say when I get ther. As for us in bikinis...well I could do with losing a few lbs but my best friend is hot by any standards, and we're only 21 so I don't think the place would empty too quickly ;)

There arent any exceptions im afraid Kath! You just have to wear one if you want to swim there, and thats that!

Per Discovery Cove: "The official ruling is that all Guests must wear a swim vest or wet suit. The swim vest is a vest you can wear over a bathing suit. The only pool that does not require the swim vest or the wet suit is the Resort Pool. The purpose of our vests and suits are not to aid the swimmer, they are to aid the Lifeguards who are trying very hard to do their job. They are bright yellow on the back, and very reflective at the bottom of the pool, unlike human skin.

If a Guest does not wear either the vest or the suit, they will be barred from entering, even if they have booked the Dolphin swim. Even the US Olympic Swim Team, when they swim at our location, are required to wear the swim vests or wet suits. Also, please remind all Guests that they may not wear jewelry."

From a phone call with Discover Cove corporate office. Just wanted to get the official word on this so that anyone coming across this thread in the future has the current official information.

Thanks, that settles it. I wasn't going to argue with them, I was going to ask whether it was necessary. Now we know it is, no problems.

yeah, didn't think you'd have a problem with it at all, but you never know who reads these forums. I'd hate for someone to show up there and get turned away.

Be sure to give us a full trip report on it! I'd love to do that some day.

We went to DC in Sept 2004.

We also swim in UK waters - and as we live 200yds from the sea we do so quite often. However, we wore the vests for most of the day (took them off when we were out of the water cos it was hot) but when we swam with the dolphins we all had shortie wet suits cos that water was jolly cold! I think the Florida heat makes the water seem even colder so it isnt like being in the sea off the UK.
