So I'm fairly new to this game, been collecting since our trip last August / September and have about 120 pins now (yes, I'm picking up 10+ per month - not bad for a UK based collector I guess). The only thing is, I seem to be going for the expensive ones - primarily disney auction pins costing between $10 and $130 each, (ok, only one has cost me that much so far).
I just wondered what the rest of you went for - do you go for sheer numbers (I'll be buying a 'grab bag' to give my sister when she goes this year), or do you go for the really nice, over priced stuff?

I find that I only buy pins that I plan on keeping - not trading. LOL I guess that's why I don't do much pin trading while I'm at WDW.

I have a bunch that are for trading, but I try to trade for ones I want. I bought a ton before the Disney store stopped carrying them. I got like 30 of them for 99 cents each, perfect for trading

Can you buy pins in the UK?

I find myself, right now, going through all my pins, finding duplicates or the ones I don't really want, just so I'll have something to trade when we head for DLR in April. The DGD's are also going through my pins, picking out the ones they want to keep....yeah, right...I'm giving pins away.

Not in the Disney Store anymore but there are plenty of online pin places. Jam gets his from someone that runs an online store in the UK. I'll try and find the link.

And you are saving all your "special" duplicates for me, right???????

How do you know which are valuable if you swap them, I'd just go for the ones I liked

Try looking at pin pics - just look at the coolest pins, or search for a particular character.
The ones most people go for are the cast lanyard pins, which have a small hiden mickey on them - you can't buy them in the shops, you just have to trade with a cast member to get them.
I'm trying to go for quality, but they're really expensive - this pin

is a limited edition of 50, and went on ebay recently for over a hundred dollars. That's just stupid.

Thanks for that, I know DD exchanged one with a cast member, but just chose the one she like best:)

not all pins the CMs have are CM pins. They're very rare and hard to get a hold of.

So its only the CM pins that have the hidden Mickeys?
JuniorMickey

Is it difficult to spot the hidden Mickeys?

I don't know  I haven't been lucky enough to come across a CM pin

I just had a look at DDs pin that she exchanged with a cast member. It says
"Cast Lanyard Series" on the back, but there are no hidden Mickeys
Update: Just found it on e-bay here (http://cgi.ebay.com/Disney-CAST-LANYARD-PIGLET-HEAD-WINNIE-THE-POOH-WDW-Pin_W0QQitemZ6607740716QQcategoryZ38005QQssPageNam eZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

That pin is from series 3 of the cast lanyard set - theres been four series. They're not that hard to come across. for pics of all the cast lanyard pins check here:
Series 1 : http://www.pinpics.com/cgi-bin/group.cgi?group=533
Series 2: http://www.pinpics.com/cgi-bin/group.cgi?group=1591
Series 3: http://www.pinpics.com/cgi-bin/group.cgi?group=2502
Series 4: http://www.pinpics.com/cgi-bin/group.cgi?group=3273
the new ones all have hidden mickeys on them - they're not hard to spot - here's two examples:

I bought some tradeables last DLP trip (those sets you can buy which are cheaper than buying that many pins individually) I got some CM exclusives in trades but also just traded for ones that just weren't sold on the pin stands for whatever reason or to save money on buying a nicer single pin. I have about 200 pins now (I buy some on eBay as well as in the parks but don't usually trade those) and i've also traded just ones i've got bored off, to change my collection around a bit.

do you have to have a lanyard, I wear my pins on my hat...
DisneyMad

Alot of people just wear one or two on their shirts, or you can get bum bags / fanny packs with little bits of material in for them. It doesnt have to be lanyard, that's just what the CM's wear theirs one. Disney sell lanyards too, yet more money!!

Depends really...for trading it's generally numbers fr collecting it's generally quality. Personal opinion counts more really though
