These just turned up in our veg box. I was expecting jerusalem artichoke but these clearly aren't they. They're about 5 inches high and are scaring me.

OK I tasted a leaf and it was sort of sweet, a bit lettucy.

*wonders if it could actually be lettuce*

Dawn
March 7th, 2006, 12:07
I've narrowed it done to either Little Gem lettuce...

Or something else.

Whitequeen
March 7th, 2006, 12:21
Hhhhhmmm, Little Gem are a lot greener than that.
I've changed my mind on the fennel, unless you tell me it tastes of aniseed.

Don't think its little gem. Have you looked at Sainsburys website, I think they have pictures of their fruit and veg?

Dawn
March 7th, 2006, 12:34
No it tastes of lettuce.

I've just emailed the company to see. Problem is, I'm emailing head office and all the boxes are packed and delivered locally.

A most perplexing mystery... :spy:

lisaw
March 7th, 2006, 12:51

You can just slice it up thinly and add it to stir frys or salads

Dawn
March 7th, 2006, 12:55

Dawn

What I dip this bunch of leaves in my coffee?

lisaw
March 7th, 2006, 13:11
I think they used to grind it up and mix it with coffee during the war to make it go further

I used to love 'Camp' coffee essence which is coffee and chicory even though the name makes me laugh

Whitequeen
March 7th, 2006, 13:11
In the 'old days' (late 70s) there was a shortage of coffee and it was very, very expensive so to make it cheaper they put chicory in it to bulk it out and make it cheaper. I remember it was horrible.:(

Who the heck decided that chicory would be good for bulking out coffee?

Probably the same guy who looked at a cow and thought "I'll squeeze one of those and get a drink"

One of the most widely sold Chicory Coffees here in the US is Luzianne. My mother used to buy it a lot when I was a kid.

Down in New Orleans there is a place that makes Beignets (Confectioners sugar coated lumps of fried dough, DELICIOUS) and serves them with wonderful cups of Chicory Coffee. It is called Cafe du Monde. It recently reopened following Hurricane Katrina. You can also get beignets at Port Orleans French Quarter.

Dawn

Ooooh I've had coffee and beignets in Cafe du Monde. Seriously strong coffee.

These sure look like endive to me a lettuce-y type of veggie good for using the leaves to stuff with all kinds of savory fixings. Endive can sometimes be a bit bitter so that is why lots of people use it as a wrap for different fillings although you can chop it up for salads.

I think that endive is called chicory sometimes??? I have always called it endive ...

I'm still trying to figure out what a veg box is.

Dawn
March 22nd, 2006, 09:23
They were chicory and the piggies enjoyed them very much.

A veg box - we have a local company that delivers a box of assorted organic fruit and veg to our door each Tuesday. It costs more than going to the supermarket but it's quality stuff and it gets us eating different things.

Got Swiss chard and pac choi this week. I can't tell the difference.

Chris/Lisa
March 22nd, 2006, 09:29
Dont the Swiss Chard look after the pope?

Dawn
March 22nd, 2006, 09:31
It is far too early for jokes of that low standard.

Yes there are green leafy things marching up and down my kitchen.

Actually, what you call chicory, we call Belgian Endive here. It's quite nice in a salad or used as a base for an appetizer, etc.

Chicory here, is frisee in France. A thin, curly edged bitter green that is nice in salad.

Swiss chard is a nice veggie too, whether or not it leads to guarding the Pope. LOL!

pac choi? Bok Choy? One in the same?

Dawn
March 22nd, 2006, 14:59
Yep, one and the same.

I think I've got them sorted now. The chard stalks got sliced into tonight's casserole and the leaves will be steamed like spinach and served with it. Apparently it's stuffed full of vitamins A and C.

Pac choi I'm still working on, though it'll probably end up in a stir fry.

OKWTink
March 22nd, 2006, 15:04
Yep, that's pretty much what one does with pac choi/bok choy. :D It's not half bad.

Swiss chard, I usually sautee. Mushrooms, a bit of garlic. Yummy stuff.

Cool!!! We have a service like that, but it's only for dairy products.

I wouldn't have been able to tell it was chicory. My dad thought it was garlic!

It's not unlike spinach so if you like that you'll like chard.

Steven said it was delicious. Then he spat it out.
