Walt Disney World announced 38 donations Tuesday totaling more than $700,000 for children's groups and other community charities throughout Central Florida, including a foster-grandparents program and the Orlando Science Center.
The Disney's Helping Kids Shine grants were awarded Tuesday at ceremonies at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Spokeswoman Bonnie McGuire said this year's amount is a record for the 35-year-old program.
Awards went to organizations in Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole counties.
Among them:
The Florida Senior Programs of Orange County, a foster-grandparents group, received the Dianna Morgan Children's Champion Award, named for a retired Disney executive, of $60,000.
The Orlando Science Center got the Bob Allen Outstanding Community Service Award, named for the late Disney executive, of $48,000.
Kids House of Seminole (County) and three Orange County organizations, BETA Center, Justice and Peace Office and the Office for Farmworker Ministry, were awarded between $35,000-40,000 each.
Camp Boggy Creek in Lake County was granted $25,000.
Osceola County Council on Aging received $20,000.
Volunteers in Service to the Elderly, in Polk County, was given $22,000.
In a news release, Diane Ledder, director of community relations for Walt Disney World, said the company chose to support "community organizations that demonstrate such a deep dedication to improving the lives of children in Central Florida."
